Idle Problem
That is interesting that you would suggest that because i do not have a speedometer installed right now. But here's the thing...The car is a 72 240z with the 280z motor...The 240z speedo only has the little lightbulb connecters and the speedocable connector...no switch. This is what i did. I took the throttle body, fuel rail, and injectors out of the car. I thoroughly cleaned the throttle body with brake cleaner and solvent. The fuel rail i sprayed an anti-rust aluminum color coat on it and then i re-installed everything. Then i have this problem. The butterfly is closed...somehow air is getting in, which leads me back to think it is the idle valve... Where can i get one of these?

Idle Problem
I know for sure there is nothing wrong with the linkage...because i watch it...I push on the linkage with my hand to rev the motor and then it goes back to the original position but the rpms STAY. they do not go back down. Am i going crazy or is this a problem of the idle control valve or maybe the throttle valve switch? I aslo notice a hisssing noise comming from the right side of the intake manifold. I took out the injectors right before that too. I cant visual see a vacuum leak but it sure sounds like one.

Idle Problem
Today...i noticed that my throttle body was really dirty so i removed it from the car...I cleaned it thoroughly in a solvant tank and with brake cleaner. I also put in new spark plugs. Now when i rev the motor...it takes a long time for the RPM's to go back down...Sometimes it doesnt go back down at all. Did i damage the throttle body some how. Did i damage maybe the idle control valve? The linkage is fine i already checked it. Its a 72 240z but it has a 77 L28 w/ n47 ...Any ideas? THanks P.s. if i tap on the top of the throttle body with a hammer... the idle goes back down.

Transmission ratios and suggested rear gears
Thanks for the info royce...you have to bear with me im new to these cars. The bottom line is I can hardly feel a difference between 4th and 5th. I feel like it doesnt matter if i have it in 4th or 5th on the highway.... The RPMs are about 4000 @ 65....Thats just a guess becuase i dont have a working RPM or SPeedometer yet!!! So would you suggest maybe a different r-180 with just different gearing or can i change the gears in the one i have now? Thanks again

Transmission ratios and suggested rear gears
I CANT cruise on the highway without having high rpms ...sorry:stupid:

Transmission ratios and suggested rear gears
Quick question...I have 79-83 block with n47 head and a 5 speed in my 240...i believe i have the stock 240z differential...Right now i have good acceleration but my 4th and 5th gear have high rpm's and I can really cruise on the highway with out high rpm's...What would you suggest i get to have really good acceleration but having good cruising rpms on the highway? would a r-200 with 4.11 work? And where can i find one? Thanks

Frustrated...need help!
I just realized something... I also noticed that my head was a N47 head... I know that those were heads from 77-80 with the flat top pistons and in 81 they came out with the dished pistons and p90 heads... Is it possible to have the n47 with the dished pistons...Is this un-heard of? So could it be safe to say that i most likely have the 77-80 EFI and ignition setup? Let me know your thoughts...Im totally new to these cars....Or maybe cause im only 19

Frustrated...need help!
Ok here's the deal...i just bought a 240z from a salvage yard...in other words i have no idea of its history. I first noticed it had the L28 engine in it w/ the fuel injection...So i called to dealer to find out what year my engine was; they said it was from a 79-83 280Z. Here's my problem...i got a repair manual for 70-84 Z's and i can not match the right year of my engine to corrospond with all the componets to save my life. It looks as though it has a 75-77 or so ignition unit because it has that ignition control unit in the passenger kick panel (not on the side of the distibitor). I think there is also a risistor in-line with the coil and EI control unit. Many of the wires in the wire harness do not match what the book says and some are colorless. I dont know if this thing needs an O2 sensor. There are wires that are loose and i cant figure out what it needs or doesnt need. I need to know if this thing is california model or not cause that changes everything. I riped out the entire dash trying to trace wires and everything. How do i know i have the right ECU and where can i get a wiring diagram for it...WHAT DO I DO!!! ??? If anyone has any advice on how to idenify everything and solve some problems it would be much appreciated. All in all the car still runs great but it seems to be running too rich...so this is why i need to check everything

SpeedHut Guages
Whats going on!? How come nobody is pre-ordering the speedhut gauges? I do not want to wait forever for those things...I think we need to spread the word a little bit more. They are not that expensive !

speedocable
I just bought a 240z from a salvage yard...It has the L28 w/N47 and a 5 spd tranny. It does not have a speedocable. What speedocable do i buy? A 240z speedocable (240z speedometer) or a 280z speedocable (280z tranny); or are they all universal. Thanks for the info. :classic:

Transmission ratios and suggested rear gears
I have a 72 240z with the 79-83 280 L28 engine with 5spd. I believe that the differential is still the stock 240z. Right now it has no speedometer (or cable or that matter). Thats the way i bought it. Which conversion do i need to make my speedo work? Do i need to swap the speedo gears? Thanks P.S. Where is a good place to find a speedocable?

Just bought 240z
I just bought a 240z from a salvage yard. I am planning to restore it. I have been doing alot of research and i found that this 240z actually has the 79-83 L28 2.8L engine with the 5 spd tranny in it. Most of the guages do not work and i dont have a wiring diagram for anything...Does anybody have any advice as to how to callibrate everything to work such as the speedometer, tach, and water temp guage. I also noticed that there is no O2 sensor because headers were installed...but i dont know where the wires are for O2 sensor licked back to the control unit...The engine is running very rich and i think it is because the lack of the O2 sensor. If anyone has any info on how to find info on this stuff it would be much apprieciated...Im glad to become a member of this "Z" family =) !!!!
