  1. Hey Chris, I haven't forgotten about you. It's just been a busy week and I haven't been getting home before it's dark. I plan on working on it this weekend, I'll have my friend's uni-syn so I can balance the carbs and get the idle/mixture sorted. I picked up new tires yesterday for the Wat's and the lugs from MSA came today. I also received the stainless brake lines and my friend's are ordering the brake hydraulics on their shop account for me. If it's not raining too much this weekend I plan on getting a lot more done

It's cool, I just wanted to toss that out there just in case. Too bad you had to pull the tank but you'll have nice peace of mind when it's back under the car. When my dad rebuilt his old CJ-2A in the 80s, we were replacing fuel filters left and right until he had the tank treated. It's been good for years now. To echo the others, I'm also a believer in OE parts, especially oil filters. If my filter isn't a Napa Gold (which is really a Wix premium), I'm going to the dealer.
  4. Chris, I was looking at my coil wiring today and didn't notice another in line resistor. Once the wires enter the wrapped harness, it's hard to say what's in there. I forgot to check which side the coil gets signal on and totally forgot about the seats. I was so wrapped up in getting the carbs adjusted and checking the brakes/cluch hydraulics everything else slipped my mind. Adam, I really know what you mean with the WIAT disease. That's how the Camaro was. It snowballed completely out of control. Nice 4Runner, that 3.4 is a fantastic engine! You should (probably shouldn't) check out All Pro Off Road. That place will drain your accounts with the best of em. Is that in Hollister? That must be right over the hill from you. The black truck in my Toyota album is my friend's 05 Tacoma with the All pro suspension and Walker Evan's coil overs, taken at Hollister. Much the same way, my truck is paused because of the Z car. I know better than to have 2 projects at the same time but I didn't want to pass on this car. My truck is almost there, it was going quickly but came to a screeching halt after getting laid off early last year. I found a new job fairly quickly but life seemed to happen at the same time so the truck has been a weekend driver lately with fancy tube bumpers and spring hangers welded to the frame. Latest news on the Z is I got the engine buttoned up and running pretty good. I'll need to borrow my friend's uni-syn before I can really say I'm happy with it (it's starting on the first crank!). The clutch master is toast and blowing bubbles into the reservoir (i may try to bleed it again but I'm pretty certain it's leaking internally). It'll need a new flex hose to the slave as well. The brake flex lines are in good shape but I found a wheel cylinder that leaked out. I was pretty exhausted by the time I hit the brakes today so I didn't pull off the front wheels. I am still pretty sure it's going to need a new brake master though... there is evidence on the booster that fluid leaked out. Oh, and I fixed my crooked windshield wipers
  5. Roasted wires are a possibility. I doubt they're shorted because you'd be popping fuses. If you just installed the stereo or did other wiring work, you might look to make sure you didn't leave any connectors loose or forget to secure grounds. That many systems dead but no blown fuses suggests to me a common ground somewhere is not secured. Are you seeing 12 volts at the fuse panel? Possibly the main power wire to the fuse box is damaged? It's hard to say because your headlights work but I'm not sure where their power is coming from. hope this helps

Are you running the stock mechanical pump? My car has a filter before the pump, that should catch any large debris headed for the pump (unless the filter isn't stock). I would cut open the fuel filter if equipped to see what's inside before dropping the tank. Possibly just an old pump that failed?
  7. Chris, I'll have to take a look for you tomorrow and post back. Thanks for the compliments on the interior! I'm pretty surprised by how comfortable the seats are and how much space there is. I'm not tall at 5'8" (172cm?) and I don't consider myself too short but I feel pretty short in this car! Real people can fit comfortably! I've been outside all day today and got the engine started! I removed the flat top carbs, smog pump, and got the balance tube plugged up to seal any vacuum leaks. I'm waiting until I install the header before changing the balance tube and removing EGR. Tomorrow's agenda is to do the brakes and clutch and get it idling down where it should be. Blew me away, this thing is not smoking at all, and the exhaust doesn't even smell bad. Oil pressure is looking good it revs smoothly Even though parts are coming off the engine, I want to do as little damage to the original parts as I can manage. Some day this car will probably be worth more in factory original form like so many muscle cars are now. But the current plans are resto mod. Period correct resto mod with Webers are a nice plan for the future but I'll be happy with my round tops while I scrounge up the 40 DCOE's.
  8. Carl's right, could have been superseded at some time point. Do the covers come off your old wiper blades? They look like they're spot welded. If they clip on, maybe you can swap the old covers to the new blades? Both of those blades look different from the ones on my 73
  9. Hi Carl, I mostly read Marlin Crawler and Trail Gear forums (both good forums). When I need hard core information I'll read/search on Pirate4x4. I never post on pirate, just read it mostly, those guys are ruthless. I keep my nose out of the drama threads. My truck's been on hold until I can buy Longfields and gears so I haven't posted much lately. I haven't changed my screen name since I started joining forums so if my name looks familiar, that might be why This is the album for my Toyota, all of the welding I did ... http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v283/70CamGuy/Yota/ Requested pics can now be found here! http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v283/70CamGuy/240Z/PicsForZcarGuys/ I took some with my iPhone and some with my digital camera. Hope this helps you guys. Adam, I suppose I was responding to the doors in a rambling sort of way. Your interior looks pretty damn clean too, and really the door panels don't look bad at all on your car. The old school look of the speakers don't look out of place on the doors. Is it possible to replace the speakers in those surrounds?

I agree. Pictures! You can also check www.nadaguides.com for classic car values

Welcome from another newb! Are those real Enkei's? The wheels look great on the car, and the car looks like it's coming along great!
  12. ok sorry, lots of text again Hey Chris, I'll be glad to snap some shots of it for you. I probably won't be able to do it until tomorrow (Friday) after work. My schedule has been frantic the last couple weeks but I'll do my best. It's funny, with every picture, I'm learning a little more about the car . Sorry that link was something you already knew about. I figured if anything was going to have a wiring diagram, the factory manual would. I believe you are correct about the color tones, the textured bit of the vinyl is a slightly different shade. I'll take some more pictures of the seats as well in the sunlight. Out of curiosity I checked Classic Datsun, and they have the butterscotch seat covers, but they don't seem to be exactly the same as mine. http://www.classicdatsun.com/ 240Z restoration parts > interior > "butterscotch" seats covers http://www.classicdatsun.com/new/240Z_tan-seats.html Adam(?), Honestly, the interior was really what sold me on this car. My Camaro never had an interior this clean. I don't have any plans to touch this interior. I might wire in my Sirius radio but that does not require any permanent changes to anything (that is the key to any changes I'm making). The body is in surprisingly good shape but I've talked to my friend that's an old time body man. He's gonna check out the dings and give me some advice on that. This was one of those cars that I absolutely could not pass on even though I took a hit to my checking account buying it. (I'm not broke, but it put me in my safety zone that I don't like to be in) It's killing me, I want to get this thing running/driving so badly! This weekend my dad is going to help me get the car down into the driveway so I can inspect the brakes, make any repairs, and bleed them out. Then I need to check the clutch master for leaks, verify slave cylinder operation and double check for leaks. Then I'm going to get the round tops on there to get it started. Somewhere in there it's getting the new coolant and the fuel lines are getting blown out/purged. I'm going to keep the EGR for now since the stock exhaust manifold is still installed. Actually I am friends with one of the best Porsche techs in California and he made an interesting point on EGR. They are designed to lower NOx emissions but they do that by lowering your peak flame temperature. The side effect is your engine doesn't ping and you can run more timing or lower octane fuel. With that in mind, I'm going to hold on to that until I swap to the header (and I want to save all those parts in good shape) Anything you guys want pictures on, I am more than happy to try to get what you need. I love cars, my job is cars, I can talk for hours about cars (but I don't bore women with them who don't care). now if anyone could tell me where to find a knob for my rear view mirror dimmer toggle...

Chris, I gave it a shot with the photos, that's all I have for the moment. I also sent you a PM, hope that helps you too! http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?p=289572&posted=1#post289572
  14. K I tried it, I think I got completely lucky because I stuck my light and camera up in the dash blind. I got 3 decent shots. It's funny I think my iPhone takes better pictures than my digital camera does now. I've never looked under the dash before, there is a surprising amount of space! There is less space for me under the steering wheel than my truck or old Camaro but I actually fit my hands up there... with a camera! I'm going to try attaching these, hopefully it maintains the resolution
  15. Sure thing, I'll do it when I get a chance. It's dark outside at the moment but I'll get it when I get a chance. The flash might work ok so I'll give it a shot
  16. I'm the new guy on the block but I've been a car nut, and motorcycle nut for a long time. I am 28, 29 in the next month or so. At 17, I bought my first car, my 1970 Camaro with money I made working for marie calenders. I finally sold it a couple years ago when I graduated college. It needed too much to fix the cancer and I wasn't in to spending the money on it. I do admit I miss that car, but it went to a loving home. When I bought my Honda a couple years ago, my Toyota became my next project. I bought myself a 110 MIG welder and taught myself to weld. It's still in process (need gears and front axle shafts) but I'm doing a solid axle swap on it. Essentially cut off the front independent suspension and weld on leaf springs for a solid front axle My '73 is my long awaited return to classic cars and rear wheel drive. It doesn't hurt these things do pretty well on gas. Sidedrafts are new to me and learning is half the fun for me -lover of all things mechanical
  17. That's good to hear, some of the better news I've heard today in fact. I looked at the paint on the brake booster, under the master, and it's bubbled so I think I know why the master is bone dry now As far as the wheels go, I am going to run the Watanabe's for now and I want to bring the shine back on the slot mags. The Wats don't weigh anything! (they're 14s) I weighed one with the tire and it was 28 pounds Anyway, I managed to upload some more pictures to my photobucket album.... like an idiot, i realized I never took a pic of the engine before i pulled the air cleaner :stupid: Ask and ye shall receive ... there's no thumbs up smiley! http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v283/70CamGuy/240Z/Interior/ http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v283/70CamGuy/240Z/ I heard these oil caps are getting rare
  18. Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I've been on enough message boards to recognize a good group. Some of the guitar and off road sites can be brutal The Webers are a future future kind of thing. Right now I already have the round tops cleaned up and ready to go on. I started pulling off the vacuum lines and air box last night to take off the flat tops but the bugs became unbearable. I thought I'd be able to quickly remove the flat tops, but there's a good amount of other stuff that needs to come off too so I'm just going to swap the carbs and balance tube for now. Bruce, the PO drained the tank and lines when he parked it, but nothing past the fuel pump was drained so I will make sure the lines are free and clear after the pump. It has fresh oil and I have fresh coolant for it. I'll be pressure bleeding the brake/clutch this weekend. I have thought about the tank because I've always read with motorcycles, it's best to store it with a full tank to keep the condensation/moisture away. It's still drained, I was just using a small gas can on Sunday. The engine cranks easy with the booster pack, which is a nice relief. My dad has known the PO for years and the car had regular oil changes while it sat, and he turned it over periodically so the engine wouldn't seize. The to-do list is quickly growing but still manageable. I'll try and take more pictures in the next day and post them up. I have plans after work tonight so I won't be getting home until it's dark. Enigma, awesome car! I'd be lying if I said I haven't seen your posts in the S30 area. haha I even showed my mom pictures of your car so she knew what color mine was going to be. I'll have to cruise on down when it's running and drivable. My cousins grew up in Felton and I went to San Jose State so that area is not completely foreign. I've eaten in Ben Lomond a few times at the PW market on motorcycle rides down 9, they have some good stuff in there. Sorry such a long post!
  19. Hey everyone, been lurking for a bit now but finally got my '73 so I thought I'd post an introduction. This forum has already been an extraordinary help I picked it up Sunday and I am really excited. It's been sitting for more than 10 years in the guy's garage so I had to tow it. I almost got it started today but I think I just need to pull the carbs and give them a good cleaning. It fires with the carb clean but I think the gas is gummed up in the fuel bowls. When I first looked at it I thought it had the original dash but it does have a cap and the rest of the interior is in fantastic condition. It is bone stock and I do have mild plans. I have a 6-2-1 header and a Cannon triple manifold and a line on some Weber 40's. In the mean time I want to get it running and cleaned up a bit. Before I got the triple manifold I was getting some 4 screw SU's cleaned up and ready to go on. I may just put the round tops and balance tube on to get it going. Just need time :stupid: I think eventually I will want to find an earlier bumper but these aren't bad. There are dings here and there but I think a good dent guy can handle most of them. Only 50,782 miles!!! You can check out my photobucket album for more of the pictures http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v283/70CamGuy/240Z
