Roads were good, made it to Denver. Little slick in spots. I did buy the chains though. Good to have at least. Long drive for the Dakotas about 8 hrs. Wyoming is beautiful, great drive, the mountains in the back ground. A little windy, kinda like sailin in the z . I did have my first pull over today. 53 in a 40. Got off with a warning. Just a little snow , debating getting snow chains to make it down to Denver but I think the snow on the roads will melt quick. I am going to be preventative and have my differential looked at in Boulder, so it doesn't die on me. Car is running good though, little tough to start in the cold, but holding up well. Glad the snow storm passed, time to get back on the road. Frankie

Hey guys Glad ur enjoyin the posts. Hit up the badlands today, and mt rushmore. The hills were pretty rough on the car. Had to keep down shiftin to get up the step inclines. I have been also down shiftin to slow the car down while going down hill instead of ridin the brakes. Not sure if this is the right procedure, but i have heard of the brakes gettin really hot and not workin when u really need them. Wyoming tomorrow, this wknd Denver, after the snow storm passes. Stayin indoors tonight, back in the tent tomorrow. Frankie

Hello from South Dakota Got the car back today, can't even tell a difference with the new tranny. Shifts the same and no problems. I changed the oil in her, 10w30, and got back on the road. Handles fine. I past a Buck going do the road, he was just standing on the left side, right on the yellow line. Kinda surprised me, scared the ISH! outta the guy passin me . Oh and speed limit is 75, how cool is that. Im gonna try for Wyoming tomorrow. Found out my diff. has a small leak, ill be lookin too repair that soon. Good night from the great outdoors Frankie

Yeah I agree with Z's, but i saw a z were the guy had used a metal mesh as a wall separating the seating section from the back. With this set up I think your box could be pretty well. Frankie

Hey fast woman, yeah i did check out mechanics all around, but the closest bigger town was 40 miles away, the tow cost would have really ate into my budget. I'll probably just leave the tranny, i can't take it with me and shipping it would be equal to its value.

I have a mechanical fuel pump in it currently. I hadn't thought about the affect of the higher altitude on the carbs, but it makes sense. I have left chicago, yesterday, picked up and dropped off the 280zx tranny to the shop. Now they just have to put it in. I was a little concerned with the crossmember as its different on the zx, but maybe the same mount to the tranny?? And a couple of other things were different. Hopefully it works out fine. I spent the night in a rental waitin for the shop to open the next day. The hotel was booked. In minneapolis now waiting for the shop to put it in. On the road again, I just can't wait to get on the road again Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway, goin my way, and my way is on the road again Frankie

Yea im a little curious how its gonna accelerate with my current set up, as i don't know what i have in the rear end It will be nice to finally live in a place with some people that know how to work on the z frankie

This damn "Basic Car Parts," they have been givin me the run around as to where my tranny is for the last week. Don't ever use these guys. I ended up taken a bus to chicago, and holdin up fort till the part gets shipped. 11 hr bus ride!!!! I found a junk yard on the way to minny, that has a 1983 280zx 5 spd, that im gonna grab if this tranny doesn't show up tuesday or wednesday. I only wish i would have found it earlier. Live and learn So no good news yet fast woman, I'll keep you posted once i have some news Frankie

Yeah i think you got me beat, id be a little worried about bein stuck in a place called devils kettle. Not to mention the DESERT! Every old Z owner has gotta do this once. I didn't try a local Nissan dealership, I didn't even think to try. I should have looked harder. I did find a tranny out of the same car, 72 240z, 50 k and a 5 speed. 500 w shipping and 30 day warranty. I gotta admit the warranty pulled me in. I might bus out for the week and come back when she is done, just to save some cash on the hotel. But I am by no means callin it quits. I'm gonna hang low for the next week. After that, on my way to denver via SD, and WY. I gotta try the mountains, they are so cool to drive in. Frankie

Yes Mike, I just need a used tranny compatible with the 240z, i have a 5 speed in there now but im not sure which one. Of course in better shape then my own. Searching craigslist by city, and ebay as well. I have a separate thread for the part on the forum. Thanks Frankie

Hey guys, So im stuck out here in minnesota, my tranny welded right in to one of the gears, the local shop says i need a new one, ill settle for used. Anybody got access to one of these? I am currently in the bottom of minnesota, also lookin for another shop to do this more timely. Down and out right now, any help would be appreciated Frankie

YEP, looks like i better put up roots im stuck in the bottom of Minnesota at the side of the highway. Talked to a mechanic and the car is stuck in gear, and needs to be pulled out and rebuilt. Im gonna post and see what i can find for a good used transmission out there. Anybody know of any good shops in BFE. Frankie

So I research my transmission all night from my tiny hotel room. I am still clueless as to the fluid. Excuse me for my ignorance, but i always thought tranny fluid, and gear oil were 2 separate things for 2 separate parts of the transmission. Now after researching it seems that gear oil is an alternative to transmission fluid, and there is only one chamber to drain and fill in the tranny. Am I correct or lost as usual? Frankie

Made to minnesota today. 2 more issues, window won't shut, and then........my car broke down I was having trouble with it poppin out of 5th, and then it got better for a while, then all of a sudden it popped out and wouldn't go back in, so i drove it in 4th to it into this little town and it wouldn't go in gear at all I had it towed to a mechanic shop and will go over in the morning I believe the clutch just needs to be adjusted and i need some tranny fluid and gear oil as it seemed to be whinning a bit.......sound right? Stuck in BFE, in a hotel for the night Well will see how it goes in the morning Frankie

No kiddin Darrell, I have take my 240z wiper motor to them before I made it to Chicago last night with only 2 issues. Shifter keeps poppin out of fifth gear and my dashboard lights went out when i arrive. So i have some investigating to do. I'll hope to be headin out to Denver next week.
