  1. On the rear I am shaving it all. I figured I would order it from the Z store.
  2. If you hit the stud on it's "head" it will sometimes loosen the stud. Then you can use the tool featured in the link I included to extract it. It's just another option I thought I would throw out there. Consider trying everything else before you heat the stud, the heat, if to much may make it very hard to drill if you do infact have to drill and re-tap. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Irwin-5-pcs-3-8-in-drive-Bolt-Grip-base-extractor-set-for-3-8-7-16-1-2-9-16-and-5-8-in-or-11-14-and-16-mm-bolts/_/N-25qe;jsessionid=3290D1D2F8C3F80DD359D2F456D334C6.diyprod2-b2c4?counter=3&itemIdentifier=486979_0_0_
  3. I have been working on this car for years. My workflow over the past few years has been relaxed, with me often getting discouraged do to a less than desirable workspace. January 2011 I built a 30x40 shop. I have spent the better part of this year outfitting the shop and finishing up some other projects. I am excited that after many years of my Z being broken down, sad, and getting worse every day, she is coming back to life. With many bruised knuckles and hours of scratching my head, her engine fired up and is running smoothly. I took the doors, fenders, hatch, and hood off to help with the choice to change from black to white. I sanded, cut everything in and the reinstalled the parts. I have decided to paint her Matte white, I am adding ZG style fender flares and a fiberglass 240z front bumper. I will keep this thread updated with pictures and details of the progress. I have never repainted a car and I have only read books on common paint and body repair techniques. I have no time frame set. This should be an exciting adventure, and I hope some of you can at least be entertained by my efforts! Expect pictures soon!

Check the 2 fuseable links on the battery, I just found that mine were killing power to the ECU.
  5. FIXED, Holy moly! She has been down for at least 5 years with these issues. Turns out #10 pin was dead as a door nail. I traced the wires up into the harness and found one that had deteriorated inside. I replaced it and BAM, she purrs like a kitten! My injectors and cold start injector are leaking I'm guessing. During my tests the car kept starting with the ecm disconnected. No big deal, I will buy them new if the car is actually fixed. Thanks for the input and I am excited to be moving in the direction of driving my Z again.
  6. Thanks for the input, I am heading out to the shop this morning to see what I can find! i guess I will refurbish my original harness.
  7. Thank you for your reply! Yes I have the fuel injection bible. my car is a 78. I am only aware of the 4 fuseble links located near the battery and they are all good. I am not sure what an FSM is?
  8. I tested them with a noid light and then whith a mutlimeter set for 12 volts. I replaced the fuel injector relay, the other device that is on the driverside inner fender by the brake booster, the wiring harness and the ECU. Whats left, am I missing something. The only thing that is not connected is the Temp sensor (the one wire one for the Gauge). The car starts but will die if I unplugged the cold start valve. my old harness was only dead on cylinder #3 This one is dead on all! Does anyone know where I can buy a brand new harness?
  9. 2008 quad dodge 3500 4X4 It wasn't the trucks fault, I just hated the payments after my trucking company cratered! I took a $6000 loss when I sold it!!! That is enough to do a lot of work to my Z!

  11. By the way my Z has made the new oil nasty after about 200 miles everytime for the past 8 years, and it always smells like gas! I haven't lost a crank yet! so... maybe it's ok.
  12. Take a sample to Speedco and they will analyze the oil for you and tell you exactly what is in it. http://www.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=105782012853625495351.00046a6e505517f2c5f3e&z=5new Is your oil pressure staying were it is supposed to?

After My beloved 1978 280z set for the past 7ish years I finally figured out the wiring issues. I am so excited to move forward and start fixing her back up! When I parked the car I was to young and uneducated to figure out the issues. My mind was plagued with Muscle car input saying go get a real car! So I did! !969 Camaro to be exact. So here we are 7 years later and I finally convinced myself to fix the Z and the Z Magic has taken over! I am so excited to get into it and breath new life into an old friend! I tell you this to half way introduce myself and prepare the ground for many great relationships with a great community of people and there cars! Here are some recent pictures of my girl cleaning my lady!

I can certainly understand that. The GTO is my wife's car and she has to have the sound of the cam to prove how tough she is in front of all the guys. I am still looking for input on the car if anyone has experienced this.

Thanks Blake. I see you are a Goat owner. Here is a pic of mine. Do you have any work done to the GTO? http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u129/melily123/th_GF5-Prettyshots049.jpg' alt='th_GF5-Prettyshots049.jpg'>

  22. I have replaced the injectors (new from Napa) as well as the injector relay (new from napa) that is located on the passenger side by the battery. I checked my wires with a noid light and I am not getting any juice to the injectors ( 3 and 6). I also replaced the ECU (eBay used). I am trying to track down the issue so I checked the injector wires as far as I can trace them into the harness and they are dead the whole way. I have also replaced the Thermotime and the temp sensor( new from Napa). Which made the car run really well except the 2 dead cylinders. I really appreciate your input and hope you can help me get my beloved Z back on the road. She was my first car when I turned 16 ( I'm 25). I have not driven her for about 4 years due to this issue. With Love and Light, Aaron
  23. Starter button FTW!!!
  24. I have owned my 1978 280z for around 8 years now. She has been sitting for two years and I am now trying to get her up and running again. I will be posting up many questions I am sure.
