I had this problem with my original 72. It was the lead at the voltage regulator that feeds back to the battery to tell it what the charge sate is. It was broken at the connector under the regulator. If it;s not connected it will be telling the regulator that the battery is dead to give it max charge. If I remember right it was a white wire.

Check the weight of oil in the tranny! I changed oil in mine and it started doing the same thing. I then read somewhere that the weight of the oil has to be the heavy kind as thinner oil does not allow the synchos to work correctly. I don't remmember what weight to use but make sure it regular gear oil and not synthetic also. Just a couple more things to look at with the grinding of gears.

I used to have a 72 I drove as my daily car. I always got about 25 to 26 mpg unless I let the oil get low in the carbs. If that happened the mpg dropped. In fact on one long trip I got 30 mpg. Currenly I have a 78 and when I checked the mpg I was getting about 25. If you get less I would believe you have lead in your shoes or it's not tuned right.
