  1. Very nice PDF file of the wiring harness. I've been waiting for one of these. Easy to save, take to a print shop, and make a poster-size harness for the garage. Something I've considered ever since seeing Jim's, but now I have the file. Thanks texasz. I'm glad I came back to take a closer look at those.
  2. I'm not sure exactly what you mean... but I would suggest an electrical fuel pump for your triple webers. Some people are split on this issue, usually arguing that mechanical is fine and more reliable. I have switched back and fourth, it's a pretty intuitive part to install/uninstall. http://www.racetep.com/webfuelspark.html#webfuel. On recently switching back to electric, Summit has the 4070 for $76. http://www.summitracing.com/search/Brand/Carter/Product-Line/Carter-Universal-Rotary-Vane-Electric-Fuel-Pumps/?autoview=sku
  3. I found this pretty impressive... http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36736

You might want to try searching this forum: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=61 I just searched, and there's a few threads on flat-round top swaps -- but no mention of PCV tube. Sorry I can't help you.
  5. I know this one is $100 more, but it is nearly a bolt-on to the z, and comes with hoses, and the rubber mounts that are mentioned above. http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Parts_DATZ_Radiator_Kit.html Alternatively, just the bracket mounting kit (with the mentioned rubber) is available for $85. You need to drill two holes and it bolts in. http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Parts_DAT-Radiator-Mount.html The hardest part is figuring out which way is up, or in my case, removing the old radiator.

It's too bad Crane Cams don't grind anything for the Datsun anymore. I know they will work perfectly with stock springs. The previous owner of my car, and the shop (Whitehead Performance), both speak highly of these cams. Unfortunately they went under awhile ago, and have recently been bought out. They do not currently grind Datsun cams anymore, but "will consider it if there is enough demand". I would guess the cost (new) to be 350. My car went to the shop awhile ago and the needs a new cam, among some other things. Fortunately, the shop had a used spare [crane] cam, identical to the one that I am replacing. If you do somehow wind up with a crane cam, do not use stiffer springs below 500 lift. It is not required, will cause it to wear prematurely, and you "will not see any gain in performance". This is why I am currently replacing my cam. I don't have the model number. It's a "mild cam" in an NA L28, with a soon-to-be-measured (but slight) bore, driven 98% street.
  7. The stickies that Pop's Z mentioned are here: http://forums.hybridz.org/forumdisplay.php?f=62 I got (In my opinion) the best info out of this one. About a month ago, I printed it in color, made my notes, and put it in the z closet. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=114798 For what it's worth, I would also wait on buying. Tom.
  8. Thanks guys. Is it too late to add a little more detail to the stop in Calgrary? Before meeting zKars, I was having overheating problems -- the new aluminum rad we installed before leaving Whistler (from JTR V8 swap catalogue) does wonders at speed for the inline-6, but no fan shroud and a free-spinning fan clutch did little for Calgary’s rush hour. Add this with an inability to develop power, and you get me, revving it up and riding the clutch with relatively no cooling. It also ment I would be able to drive for 5-10min, watching the temp gauge, and then pull over and pop the hood, waiting for her to cool off. I was taught from a very young age about how terrible it is to ride the clutch, but I had no other option. It's that or I stall. Anyways, let's just say I "rested" many, many times in Calgrary... I clearly remember turning left on a green light, onto a street that goes uphill. The car in front of me slams on the brakes halfway through the turn, for reasons that are beyond me. Anyways, I'm left halfway through the intersection, stopped on a hill, clutch not engaged. I quickly revved to 4-5,000, and kept the pedal at (what would be) 3,000 and tried to go uphill. My overheating z does not take kindely to this action and stalls. The light turns red. Happiness does not ensure. The first two drivers, who were at the red light at 90* to me (watching me stall) both immediately pull away and swerve around me on opposite sides, one giving me the finger and the other shouting "Learn how to drive!". My z is off, and I apply the brake, parking brake, and put both my hands up. Mouthing "Sorry" while looking the oncoming drivers in the eye just wasn't enough, I guess, as the insults and fingers continued. Light turns yellow. I start the z, rev up similar to the first time (but higher), and make it the turn and an immediate right into a gas station. I park away from all those mean folk, pop the hood, and light a cigarette.
  9. It really depends on my posting, but it will probably be learning to speak french. For my third summer in a row. If I get french, it's a straight 8:30-3:00 work days, nothing really to worry about. This would be the ideal option for my z, as we could spend much time getting to know each other. This is followed by about a month of paid leave, just me and the 240. Oh, the things we could do... (ranked priority, not necessarily actual order) (being done: engine is in pieces in the shop. Warped pistons, worn guide, slack chain, dying cam. After this, the triples will be tuned.) **During the Winter: Read** I'm still quite new to being my own mechanic. 1. Complete flush of all fluids 2. Brake pads, check rotors, balance tires 3. Dave's PLH/HLH upgrades, with the "improved" fusebox from MSA 4. "Fixed the door slamming issue" improvement from hybridz 5. Working door locks. 7. Fabricate some 5 1/4" fibreglass kicker/rocker pod speakers to bolt in by the feet. I'm also a bit of an audiophile. Lots of wiring and electrical. I dislike electrical ever since my shocking/welding incident of fiddling with wires with the battery connected. Alas... 6. Car alarm and working door locks, before installing anything expensive 7. -- Eclipse deck install -- PG Amp mounted and installed, wires ran properly -- Inline fuses added to a second wire from the + terminal (stereo only) and before the + terminal on the amp. No accidental welding. -- Sub enclosure built around spare tire area for solo 12" PG sub. Probably crossover at 80hz. I like the idea of hiding the amp there, too. Credit this amp idea to looking at Dave's pictures. -- Equalizer mounted to the back of the passenger seat, for now. -- Stereo testing, and possibly an alternator upgrade. -- Laser shifters installed -- Laser detector installed. -- Receiver for the above two mounts below the head unit (stereo deck). -- By this time, the wiring under the hood (and throughout the car) needs cleaning up and can be made tight. 8. Body work. --Replace right fender and headlight bucket. A gift from Dad. I guess his little 240 was hard to see, all covered in snow --Straighten and bondo the crunch dent in the rear frame, above the bumper and below the hatch. 9. -- Maybe look at straightening the nose of the bonnet. That was a gift from my mother. And finally.. Install the headlight covers from MSA that my wife bought my mistress for Christmas Unless I get actual training, in which case I get the necessary stuff done before I leave, and might be able to tinker some on the weekends. This is extremely unlikely. I may get posted to go somewhere doing something else, but so long as it's not pass/fail "career on the line" style training, I should have plenty of free time. I'd probably just take it more seriously than learning french. No disrespect intended. Arne, I am in love with your paint job. Really in love. She's so beautiful. My z will get semi-matching red spray paint (aerosol style) for about another 15-20 months, when I can afford paint, a compressor, and a gun.
  10. Limit of 10 pictures per upload. Here's a hairpin and twist from the duffy, and a couple from the Trans-Canada. Went to the CN Tower in Toronto. It has a glass floor. My expierence was identical to this picture: Maybe I'll take a deacent solo shot of the car if it ever get's back from the shop. I'm picturing a the beautiful clearcoat on the bonnet... On that note, Whitehead Peformance just called. Turns out the heads are warped too. Valve job to accompany this. Total estimate, should be just under three. Then we can look at the carbs
  11. Good to hear from ya Jim! Thank's for the words, and the help along the way. Now so long as I remember to disconnect the battery... Really though, I took no pictures along the way. Mistake. I spent the last couple hours browsing for deacent shots of the road traveled. The duffy was an experience, and one of the few portions where I was limited by driving ability instead of the speed limit. It begins with a bit of a twisty road leading to the mountains... then about 20min of nonstop (very steep) hairpin switchbacks, climbing up... From there, anything goes to the other side. The road isn’t perfect, gravel and the occasional pothole, with some construction... but it's breathtaking. Both in scenery and from the sounds of the car. Single-lane-traffic wooden bridges, hairpin corners with it's entirety (spare the road) dropping off to a sheer cliff, increasing and decreasing radial turns while dipping and/or climbing, and a few shorter straightaways in between -- just enough that you need 5th gear for 10 seconds to keep it up before downshifting. I did the real Rockies at night, after the stopover at the gas station for the water pump and alternator. It rained, hard, so I didn't really get to enjoy it. Those night truckers really haul. I'm getting passed fast with huge splashes of water kicking onto the windshield every 30 seconds, while going 20mph over the posted. For a lot of the Trans-Canada highway past Calgary, limit 110Kph, you could see until the horizon. Turns were extremely gradually, but present. Traffic was double or triple lane, one direction, with 10-25m seperation from oncoming traffic (two giant parallel roads). Pics of these the duffy, not taken by me. The second picture is just after lillooet (comes up after the duffy, when the road becomes slightls less of a challenge).
  12. Another lesson learned... disconnect the battery. The wire welded itself to the frame (right-side passenger foot area). I went with a new HI-6 from jags or summit or whatever. Crane cams is back in business, FYI. This entire time, my dad has insisted that there's no way it can be those carbs. "They are perfect", it should "go like stink", and "your problem is elsewhere". I disagree, and eventually (without finding the problem), I send it to Whitehead Peformance in Toronto, again on the Flatbed (for free again, Thank you BCAA!) Mike (from Whitehead) called my yesterday. Carbs not responding to any tuning whatsoever. Turns out whoever did the previous work on the engine (slight bore, mild cam, and rebuild at 50,xxx mi) got a little mixed up. Cam wore prematurely, lobes on rockers damages, guide worn to sh**, and loose chain. Too bad, because the previous guy was paid a small fortune for the rebuild. Yep, that would cause it to run rich enough to spend $2K on gas to get here. The mentioned work is currently being done, and should be ready in a couple weeks. He was right, it wasn't the carbs. "The Mistress", as the wife calls her, is living up to her name. I will now be spending my next vacation in Kingston doing bodywork (instead of leaving for all inclusive). I love it though, and it will all be worth it come driving season again, where my wife will learn of the joys of brake bleeding. I learned so much during this trip, and so much more from just reading this site in (all) my spare time. Cheers to you. Tom.
  13. Deadlock Toronto traffic for a couple hours. Must be good for those (new) plugs. Changed them outside a Canadian Tire half an hour ago. I get to my I arrived on Friday, we got married Monday. No honeymoon, going to save it for later in the year. I have rugby training camp starting the day I got married anyways. I will never leave Toronto in rush-hour again. **** that. I'm way too defensive in traffic when I'm in the z, and I'm taken advantage of. I also miss my exit a few times, because the exit lane is backed up for >1km before the turn and I'm not enough of a d**k to try to butt my way in right at the front, when I realize I'm in the wrong lane. Not with BC plates or in a z, anyways. Only a few hours away from Kingston now, I can smell the pain of training camp that awaits me. I pull off the exit, and within 500m of pulling off, notice the same power issues. Feels like a miss. ***Hear that? I'm diagnosing my own problems*** I limp to my building and unpack. There's my drive across Canada. But... if it's not spark issues, then what is it? Misses intermittently. I change to a Unilite distributor and new ignition. Same problem. Two new ignitions, actually... I blew the first one fully when working on it. Didn't disconnect the battery. zap goes a high-gauge wire. Black goes my hand. I wake up some time later, on my back, beside the car. No engraving on the wedding band anymore. My mistress shaved it off.
  14. Just a little story, ** Two months before starting this trip, I really only had a general concept of how an engine works, and NO IDEA how to work on a z** I recently drove from Whistler (near Vancouver) to Kingston (near Toronto) in what was, until recently, my dad's old project car. He was looking to sell, and I had been watching, helping him in the garage since I was 8. There was no way anyone but me was taking it. It has been sitting in the driveway, snowed on every winter, for >10 years. Started and given a short drive yearly. This was June/July 09, we spent a couple weeks prep and I went along my way. I learned a bit. Weatherstrip, changed a door, electrical/lighting, major roof repair, DIY paint/clearcoat. Learned the basics of a timing light, weber tuning, and distributor. Anyways, I took the twisty single-lane, occasional cliff drop-off route through the Western BC mountains (Duffy lake road) -- Beautiful. The last word of advise before I left was "you'd better full it to the top before leaving Squamish, there are NO gas stations until you reach the other side". We didn't have time to fix the fuel leak (leaks from the seal) before leaving Whistler. I pre-paid in cash, filled it until it was forcing fuel out of that seam like I had never seen before, and took off. Not that I wanted to be a d**k and pollute the envirornment, but because I really didn't want to be stranded halfway through the mountains. On a side note, GPS really helped for this road. I recommend it for anyone that's thinking of pushing their z in unfamiliar twisties. I couldn't listen to music through the mountains -- the L28 triple weber setup was much more than adequate for my ears, especially under the heavy downshifting and acceleration of this road. This road bit me with the z bug hard. Now that I was under much more stable conditions, and able to listen to music, the stereo cuts out. Bummer. I'm 2-3 gas stops in at this point, and pull into my fourth and final gas station. I fill up, and she doesn't turn over. I realize the lights aren't turning on. I put 1+1 together and figure it's the battery/"battery charger thing". I wheel it to the attached shop. They agree with my diagnostic. They then charge me $150 for a battery "diagnostic + charge", and attempt to take $400 for parts+labour for the alternator change. I pay for the battery service without complaint, and tell them that I'd rather change the alternator myself. They charge me $300 for an alternator, and it arrives in 30min. Owner/Manager is not very happy that I want to change it myself. The fun begins. This is where I wheel the 240 out into the parking lot, and apply the parking brake. I open the box, and discover what an alternator looks like. I call home, and get a brief on how to change an alternator from home. It seems straightforward. Goes on like it comes off. Looked under the car and proudly admired my work, to see fluid dripping from the chain cover. Doesn't smell like gas. Tastes sweet. Whoever said in chemistry class "NEVER taste chemicals to identify them" was wrong. I make another call home. Leaking antifreeze confirmed. Water pump needs replacing. There's a spare in the hatch. I get out my tools again, and it's getting dark. I discover the joy of removing the fan before loosening the bolts on the worn shroud. I clearly mark how everything comes off, as this is another job that's pretty intuitive. I get the old one off, and antifreeze leaks everywhere. I'm taking the old nuts off have been fiddling with the "last nut" from the old pump for an hour, when a truck pulls in looking for gas. I walk over to the driver dirty, confused, and half-soaked in drying antifreeze. He looks at me and the part i'm carrying, gives me a inquisitive look, and says "That's a waterpump". I agree. "Why is it not on your car?". I explain. He turns out to be a mechanic by trade, and points me in the right direction. It took him about 40sec to get the nut off. For the next hour, I get the new water pump on, and begin the drive over the rest of the Rockies to meet (and stay with) a friend. The 240 barely makes it to Calgrary. Begins limping about 20min after getting into the city. I make it to her place and sleep. I drive/push the car to a few places, where I'm told the same thing... either "I have no idea", "you should take it to....". I make it to NAPA autoparts, clean the (filthy) air filters, and buy a timing light. I play with timing and get a little more power, but still luggs under load, runs extremely rich, and backfires (yet idles fine through the revs). I call home. Dad posts on classicz under "Help Me!" fourms for a mechanic in Calgrary. "zKars" from this site invites me to his home garage, where I find two or three other Z's besides mine. We look at timing, fix that fuel leak, play with timing, replace plugs, and take a quick look inside the engine. **this is the first time I have ever taken the valve cover off**. I learn about finding TDC and making sure the distributor and pully are in line. I drive away happy. The cat comes back, the very next day... ... on a flatbed! I call BCAA (best investment ever) and "zKars" and we wind up changing the distributor and bypassing the HI-6 and XR700 ignition, running it straight from the PS92 coil. I again leave happy. I call dad. I guess working on the old 240 before I left rekindled his interest, because it's been about three days without a zed in the driveway... and he's already bought another one. Arizona 240z. Completely stock, just about as rust-free as you get em'. I then drive from Calgrary to Winnipeg and realize what terrible fuel consumption I am have. Spend the night with a friend of a friend in Winnipeg, and continue to Thunder Bay (Western Ontario) the next day. By this time, I've come to realize that I have terrible spark issues. It will deliver spark fine if the spark plug wire is held 1/4' away from the distributor cap, and allowed to arc to it's destination, but not when it is pushed in. By now, I know that because she is running This problem bewilders many. I also discover the zap these things carry. Guess you can't hold if further than 1/2' away. I also test the speed to 120mph on the Canadian Prairies. ***Some may disagree with this speed test, but you can literally see flat road all the way to the horizon. It took awhile to find the right opportunity to give her some WOT, and there cannot be a safer highway to test this on*** Arriving in Thunder Bay at night, and going to stay with a couple other family friends, I search for two hours on unlighted gravel roads, driving with my head out the window, until I find the right place. I sleep, and begin my search (in vain) in Thunder Bay for a few days for a solution to my spark issue. I find nothing, and leave with the main wire from the coil electrical-taped 1/4' out of the cap. Runs much better. I also buy some di-electrical grease and coat the inside of the other terminals with them, replacing the spark plug wires with a nice set from crappy tire. As I'm leaving, going 5-10mph on a gravel road in my stiff, lowered 240... a transport truck passes me at around 60, throwing gravel all over my <link rel="File-List" Bastard. There's a nice clearcoar job needed on the mistresses’ hood, and a couple dents in the drivers door. That drivers door was PERFECT after we painted in Whistler a week ago... Leaving Thunder Bay, I am exited. Already in Ontario, I plan to get married as soon as possible after arriving in Toronto (city hall wedding). I follow the GPS quite blindly and without hesitation. It takes me off the main road. I don't complain, because I'm going through a bunch of random twisties and loving it. I'm now learning, by feel, how to steer with the throttle. I also begin to really compress some of the shocks through the turns, and love that feeling too. The taillights cut out about. I pull over and find the grounding issue under the passenger foot area. This happens a few times. Dave's PLH, here I come. I also am having headlight issues. One Headlight, two HI-Beams, or Vice-versa. I am loving the twisties, when they stop, and I arrive in the tiny little town my GPS has taken me to. Why? I search for where I'm supposed to go for 20min before realizing I'm at a ferry terminal. Great. Let's get the sleeping bag out... I get in line for the ferry a little early (1-2am). One benefit to my job is that I can sleep anywhere on command from the mind. I open the passenger window, stick my feet out (I'm in a sleeping bag), and rack out for the night. Cars honking! Somebody yelling! I wake up. The security guard angrily asks me for ID, wanting to open the gates 10min early to help the traffic. I flash my ID, and we end up having a 10min chat about the military. She was leaving for basic in a week. While on the ferry, I'm studying the electrical diagram trying to find the source of my grounding issue with the side markers. A fellow enthusiast sees me and we talk. Good ferry, crap food. I get to the other side and drive in the blistering heat to Toronto. Traffic is terrible, but I get a few honks and thumb's-up from random's. One chick in the passenger seat beside me (to the left) indicates that I'm driving her car. I don't quite know how she conveyed this; she must own one.
  15. I run firefox and do not have that right-click option. Not that I have a printer at home, anyways... For many of my printed threads, I was looking for info from over one post. Thanks though, might be worth something -- I'll try this method at work sometime when I'm looking at solo diagram/post/pic.
  16. I prefer paper as well. I think a printable function may be useful on this website, actually. A few months ago, I went to the printers and individually clicked on the many, many pages printed from various sections. From the incredibly informational "shock and strut" pages, to Differential stickie(s?), to the more practical "wiper motor upgrade" (thanks Dave) or "Fixed the door slamming issue". My apologies, as I have certainly mixed up articles from hybrid and classic z. If there was a more printer-friendly way of doing this, I'm going to feel like such an arse... because it might have been your tax dollars hard at work.
  17. I considered making a V8-swap joke, but it just doesn't seem like the ideal environment... If you're into tracking the early z cars, Back's page is at http://www.zhome.com/. Click on History from the left menu for more info. Since this thread is still going, here's a nicer shot of HLS30-00013 taken from a different thread from CTZCC.com: The cover shot of Nissan Sport from Jan 2010: And just because I just like pictures, here's one I saved awhile ago of HLS30-00006, also from CTZCC.com: First and last shots are clickable to photobucket for full-size. I didn't want to disturb the size of the default classicz.com thread frame with oversize pictures. If there's a copyright issue, let me know and down they'll come. I just deleted the links to the original threads and the pasta is ready. Enjoy.
  18. Easy to go through all four pages of how-to.

  20. Hey guys, I'm not quite sure where to post this, but... I just got off the phone with Crane technical support, and their ignition components are on the shelves as of days ago. He recommended Nelson Specialties in N. Catalonia to me, a Canadian, as Crane does not do individual buys or sell (as of yet) anything to Canada and they are sure to be one of the first to recieve their new products. They are doing their official show/tour sometime in 2010, with cam/valve train products (which are not yet available). The following was taken from their website: http://cranecams.com/?show=crane-ss S&S Cycle acquired Crane's intellectual properties, patents, trademarks, camshaft masters, inventory and some equipment in April 2009. S&S is best known for its broad line of components for V-Twin motorcycle applications. The 50-year-old company boasts extensive R&D and manufacturing capabilities, including a complete in-house 50-state Emissions Certification Lab. Crane Product Manager Terry Johnson, a 12-year vet, said, "We have already ramped up production of the motorcycle valve train and ignition products, as well as the automotive ignition line. Many of the top NASCAR teams use Crane ignition products, so maintaining continuity for these customers is top priority." Production of automotive valve train components may take longer. Chase Knight, who has over 40 years of Crane experience, has resumed his role as Valve Train Product Manager. According to Knight, "While we know the market is very hungry for our cam and valve train product lines, we want to make sure the parts we ship exceed the quality and performance expectations of our customers. At this point we can't put firm timeline as to when everything will be fully up to speed. We want to be sure to get this right!" Many of the experienced techs who have helped racers over the years are back on the phones and can be reached toll-free at 1 866-388-5120.
  21. Found both manuals, unfortunatly I need to setup the current 280zx dizzy with an optical ignition to run the XR700 from fireball. Seems like a common/straightforward mod to the dist., but requires another part... No more questions Except if anyone knows the part number to change an OE 280zx dizzy to fire from optical cables... And I'm going mechaincal advance only with the XR700, HI-6, and PS92 coil in series with the tach adapter.

  23. Talked to my dad last night, he strongly advised against hooking it up, especially before I can get it running again. Swapped the old PS92 for the new one. Haven't hooked up the HI-6, and I'm looking for the manual on how to do it. He said that the PS92 and HI-6 might even work in series with the XR700 ignition. Apprantly Crane just went out of busines. I'll keep looking, and leave the advance until (at least) it runs. If I swap an old PS92 for a new one (it's currnetly hooked up to the 280zx dizzy with no ignition amplification), do I need to take apart the dizzy and recalibrate it? I remember reading something about this...
  24. I'm running a slightly bored L28 aftermarket cam, into a 240z with triple webers. Ignition will soon be PS91 with HI-6 from crane arms. Currently, I have a 280zx Distributor without the vaccum advance hooked up (bad). I am looking for a new distributor, and would like to hear any thoughts on weather to go with vaccum and mechanical, or mechanical advance only. I know that triples are not usually set up for vaccum advance, and if I drill, it must be before the first butterfly nut on the manifold. This is not where cannon want's me to drill (there are preselected holes), but that's fine with me. I have also heard of possible problems with vaccum issues when more carbs than stock are used. I need midrange peformance, because this is primarily a daily driver. There is a mallory unilite with vaccum and mechanical on ebay right now, and I am considering buying it. My question: Should I go with mechanical advance only, or mechanical and vaccum? Thanks for any input.
  25. Wow, thank you! Assuming that ideally, I should be running mechanical only off triples... That Mallory unit also uses vaccum & mechanical advance... I'll bid for it at this price, but i'm really looking for the Mallory 4563901 (mechanical advance only). Though if I end up buying this, I wouldn't mind drilling into the manifold to install it (as I'm not going to replace it with something better).
