Hello all This past monday I took my tank in to get fixed as it has a crack. Before doing any welding the place cleans the tank thoroughly to get all the crap out. (as one would figure gasoline + fire = boom). So I though cool I'll get the thing back Tuesday throw it back in my car and be done with it. Today around noon i get a phone call from the guy that works there saying that with the amount of crud and gunk in my tank, it will take him longer to get it cleaned then expected. I agreed and told him to let me know when it was done. When I was taking the thing off the tank did seem like it was pretty filthy inside but didn't think it was that bad. So two questions for you all. 1. If the tank or fuel system have never been cleaned (its a 1/1976 280z) would it be safe to assume that the entire system need cleaning? 2. What would you guys recommend I do? Take all the lines out and drop them in carbi cleaner or something? Thank Jan

I too live in Arizona and have failed emissions, but don't worry. By your screen name I suspect you have a fuel injected 2.8L engine. If this is so then you need to do a number of things. First off you need to find the vacuum leak you have. I personally would just replace them all as they probably need to be replaced anyhow. Secondly download the FSM off here and look in the section that talks about air/fuel adjustments. It's not hard you just need the right equipment to do it. (mainly an exhaust analyzer) If you don't feel that you are up to the task you could always take it to a Z specialist (there are a number in Phoenix and surrounding areas) and ask them to "make" the car pass emissions. They will "tune" the car properly to pass emissions. I did the same thing down here in Tucson as I couldn't get it to pass. My mechanic tuned it and even took it there and passed the test for me. I would also look at the timing, and ignition system also. These have a very significant effect on your emissions. Hope this helps Jan

Hello all This afternoon I decided to change the upper hatch weather stripping. The previous owner gave me this . So I took off the deck lid and took off the old weather stripping. Test fitted the new stuff, added some glue and placed it in place using this. Placed the hatch back on an shut it. I come to find that the new weather stripping is a bit thicker and causes the hatch not to shut all the way. What I mean is, the hatch closes but is no longer flush with the rest of the car. Is this just because it is new weather stripping or did I do something wrong? Thanks Jan
  4. I too seem to have that problem. I would think that the weather stripping would keep rain from even entering that area. Well there are a number of things that I can think of you could do. First off I would fix that rust, as rust is never a good thing on a car. But anyhow you could get a piece of rubber and place one end near the end of the weather stripping and the then near the end of the car. That way the water will never come in contact with the metal. You could extend the weather stripping that is there so that the water will just pour out of the car. In my opinion this is one of those, try till you find a solution type of situation. I'm working on my Z later today so I'll take a good hard look at it some more and give you some more ideas. Jan (P.S if my suggestions need pictures to explain let me know)
  5. What kind of shape is your weather stripping in?

Hello guys I am planning on adding an oil temperature gauge to my Z. Has anyone ever done this? Where did you place the temperature sensor? Thanks Jan

Hello guys I own a 1976 Datsun 280z that has been in Arizona pretty much its entire life. (or I have been told so). After inspecting the car I found that there is little rust on the car but the undercoating that came from the factory is no longer really there. So I here is what I'm wondering. 1. Have any of you guys used the roll on bed liner on the underside of your Z? Does it work well? How hard is it to apply? 2. Any other products you guys have used for undercoating? 3. Has anyone gone through a body shop and if so how much did it cost? Thanks Jan

sblake01: Yes I do know that the injectors "tick" when the car is driving. Should it be loud enough to hear while driving? I'm not saying just normal noise, its fairly loud and increases with the RPM A bit of an update: I borrowed a friends stethoscope today and placed it on the valve cover and on each of the injectors. The valves make no noise at all. When placed on the valve cover all I could hear is the cam rolling. All the injectors TICK (as they should I guess). Not exactly sure if that is the noise but its pretty dam close. It's hard for me to really locate the noise as it comes and goes erratically. One day it will show up after 10 minutes of driving and other days I'll go the whole dam day without it appearing. I will try to record it next time it shows. I did climb under the Z today and took a look at the entire exhaust. I didn't find any obvious leaks but it is pretty dirty. (rusty). I took some pictures, let me know what you all think. Jan

Scott: I had my valves adjusted a week ago to .12 when the motor was hot. If anything they would be loose and not over tight. Secondly I've used a car stethoscope on the valve cover and all I hear from in there is the pleasant sound of the cam rolling. (no ticking). I'll do it again to make sure today and will let you know Leonard: Thanks for the advise. I'll crawl under there today and take a look at the entire exhaust. Will take pictures if anything is found (or not found really). Thanks guys Jan

Hello all Well my Z has hit its first MAJOR problem, tank crack. Was replacing the weather stripping on the doors today when I smelt the distinctive smell of gasoline. Check under my car and long and behold raw fuel is slowly dripping out of the tank. I took it to the mechanic and had them take a look at it. Tank has a crack in the nipple where one of the fuel lines connects. Here are the options I've come up with at the moment. 1. Spend the $350 that my mechanic wants for welding and R&R the tank. 2. Buy a refurbished on for $400 from zcarsource 3. Drain tank and use some kind of sealer (like JB Weld) What are your guys opinion on this? Anyone have this happen to them? Thanks Jan

Hello all About three weeks ago I purchased my first Z. A 1976 280z with a 5 speed. The car is in pretty good shape with only a tad bit of rust located in the wheel well under the battery box. The interior is in pretty good shape as it has a complete dash cover. (so I'm pretty sure the original dash is cracked). Engine is in great shape but does have a fairly annoying ticking noise coming from the injector side of the engine. Not sure what it is yet but I will figure it out. Its fairly loud, (can hear it in the car when driving.), but I'm thinking the injectors are just old. As for problems. At the moment the gas tank is leaking from one of the connection points. I'm looking for a "new" so if anyone has any ideas let me know. Any comment, thoughts, criticism or anything else is welcome. Thanks Jan P.S The noise is not the valves, had them adjusted already and it is coming from the injector side.
