Part identification, carbs.. sad 240 story too.
I don't think it would be all that difficult to locate a shell if you wanted to graft one on, (I have one out here in California). I would imagine that, even on the east coast, most cars that are rusted underneath would have decent sheet metal on top.

Gentlemen, turn on your engines!
Maybe its a new vernacular due to electric cars. "Gentlemen (oh and ladies) turn on your motors".

Transmission ratios & acceleration
I have an '82 tranny with a 3.7 and its a great combo. Walter, with that combination you have I'd imagine you are doing very low rps's on the highway. Out of curisouity what kind of mileage do you get if you keep it around 60-65 mph?

By by blinker and bumper pockets
That's really a shame to see. So can you get at that from behind, can you use a weld on stud puller? How do you anticipate getting that dent out?

Pixar loves us
My family went to see the movie without me. I have a fondness for the franchise because Cars was the first movie I took my son to. The Incredibles, which I believe was also Pixar, had a number of Datsun Roadsters in it, so somebody over there definitely likes Datsuns. Does anyone have a still shot of a Z from the movie that they can post?

My 72 240z does not have high end power
1) an electronic distributor really helped my car wind out. 2) You may not be metering enough fuel at high rpms. I've found that, with SU's if they are running perfect at idle, they will be a bit lean at the higher end, so I set mine slightly fat of where they want to be at idle to compensate. Some of this can be mitigated by needle selection but I haven't had the time to get into it.

I'm digging those bumpers as well and how the reflect the turn signals. Do you have pic with the parking lights on?

While I'm Here, What Should I Do?
For degreasing, I can't recommend Oven Cleaner strongly enough. This product does a great job cutting grease, scrubs off with water, and has a unique property of dissolving rotted rubber down to sound rubber. While the motor is out, you may as well pull the front cross member to R&R it, clean and lube the steering rack, and change out the lower control arm bushings to urethane.

How to open FS4W71A Transmission Tail end?
Blue, I had a 5 speed apart a number of months ago. Those are a 3 piece tranny with the front(incorporated w/bell housing), the center (appx 1" wide) and the tailpiece. I don't know if the type A tranny is the same, but I just looked under my roadster (same monkey motion shifter but a 5 speed) and it also appears to have the 3 sections-not counting the bell housing as a separate section. I remember having to hold the center section in a vise ( I made a bracket to hold it) and tap/pound on the tailpiece with a hammer and wooden buffer. It is likely that a sealant was placed between these sections when it was put back together. You can also try torqueing on the tailpiece in between taps to break it loose. Maybe you can post a picture of where you are to solicit more input.

Dragged home another stray this morning
So the last thing I need is another project, but for $200.00 I couldn't pass it up. It is a 9/72mfg date and titled as a '73. I believe it has been sitting outside for around 8 years and will definitely need a lot of work, when I finish my other car. It has a wonderful pair of flat tops but I have some extra round tops I can put on. Hopefully the Z gods will smile on me for this one, because there are tons of other things that should be done before another car. If anyone recognizes the brand of wheels and steering wheel please let me know because I will need 2 center caps and a horn button.

K&N filter
Julio, what happens after 5-7 years? Do they start to crumble or something?

K&N filter
Ironically I JUST put one into my GS 400. The car is 10 years old and since I've owned it it's had a slight ping on acceleration. After installing the K&N the pinging is gone. I was kind of shocked. I haven't really gotten on the throttle yet but I'm looking forward to doing so. Also hoping for better gas mileage. For that car the K&N was about the cost of 2 standard filters so it was kind of a no brainer.

Medical Procedure In San Francisco
Not to continue a flamewar but I find the word "distasteful" offensive. Seriously though, no jokes about gay nurses, fat people are out, can't say anything bad about vegetarians, I mean, what's left. Anyone remember Archie Bunker? P.C. is sapping the fun out of life.

Help With Engine Setup?
Thanks, Blue. So it seems that while swapping my N47 head with a Maxima head would be much simpler, I'd get more compression from keeping my current head and putting in flat top pistons. Anyone know if 9.7:1 will run on [California crap] pump gas without pinging?

Bleeding brakes
Brake fluid IS nasty. However, I've heard that if you throw water on it, it will stop the fluid from etching paint. Water somehow deactivates those properties.

Help With Engine Setup?
Blue, any idea how much the Maxima N47 would change the comp ratio?

Suspension black paint
My advice is to go with a product like POR 15. Some powder coat on suspension, which is nice but much more expensive than a quart of POR. You will find that if you are driving the car, regular paint (even 2 part) is likely to chip off, at which point gloss/semi-gloss/flat will be the least of your concerns.

How about soaking the straps in alcohol to disinfect and selling them as lap bands?

M F'er Gland Nut. NEED HELP!
Some people put thread lock on the gland nut, which may be why it was so hard to get out. I don't really get why. I can't see the thing spinning off once it is torqued.

SU carb tuning in central NC ????
Talk about politically incorrect! Tut, if you have difficulty finding a shop, the carbs are really not that hard to tune as long as the throttle shafts don't leak air, and you have a flow measurer. You have an idle speed and mixture on each carb, and then an adjustment on the linkage to synch the carb flow at higher engine speed. It is just a process of going back and forth a few times to get them set up.

Another Smoking Story
Have you tested compression yet? I think you need to do a leak down test to see where the oil is leaking from. It is either rings, valves, or valve guide seals.

Silver Paint Question
So I'm gradually getting my car (8/73 240Z) back together after mixin' it up with some mailboxes back in April. The car had been painted a darker than stock metallic silver and I'm pretty sure I won't be able to match the paint so I'm planning on having to shoot the entire car. I had assumed the color was 901 silver, but after peeling off the color code sticker (which was oversprayed with paint) enough of the paint came off to reveal a color code of #306. My question is, has anyone seen this color next to 901, and if so, what are your thoughts and preference?

Anyone interested in relined Aluminum drums?
Before he does this you may want to check here. http://www.datsunparts.com/ They just commissioned to have NEW drums made. I was kind of surprised because I didn't think there would be that much demand, but judging by the comments above, I guess I was wrong [once again].
