  1. Sounds like your aesthetic jives with mine. I have no plans to do anything with the suspension for now and I plan on keeping these wheels (mostly for the original-ness). Thanks for the pic. I hope others will post up with good pictures and similarly insightful input.
  2. The old tires...and the wheels currently on the z... I'm thinking I want something more "square-ish" to the ground rather than with a rounded sidewall narrowing to a less narrow tread at the pavement... if ya know what I mean..
  3. This is really more of an aesthetics question than a performance question. I need to put new tires on my new-to-me stock 71 240z. I have the stock (dealer option?) slotted alloy wheels on it. I want tires that "look good"... I know, I know: that's a subjective matter... So: If you have a stock-ish 240, especially with these wheels, please post up pictures and include the tire brand, model and size. I'd LOVE to see front and side shots... I'm not looking for race tires or anything exotic... THANK YOU! Mark
  4. IT LIVES! Today we got it running for the first time. I had done all of the good stuff: changed oil & filter, drained fuel tank, changed coolant, new fuel filter, new Pertronix ignition... it would crank but not start. I pulled the carbs off, took them apart, cleaned them all up and put them back... viola! I didn't find ant particular problem while cleaning them but whatever it was it's cleared up now. It runs GREAT! Unfortunately our attempt at moving it under it's own power for the first time is MANY years was foiled by a rusted frozen clutch slave cylinder. I've ordered up a new one for Monday pick up... then I hope to be able to drive it up and down the driveway! If that goes well it's time to change the drivetrain gear oil and lube everything (I hope this stuff is easy to find in the Service Manual). Then on to tires.
  5. What is the mechanism behind the "suction piston"? Where does it get the suction? Is it possible that this is causing a problem for me here? (lack of proper vacuum?) Is there a seal or gasket or something I should be looking at? It still does not want to run even if I hold up the piston with the manual lifter.... Mark
  6. Have a new fuel filter. gas is new although there was some old fuel in the system that still seems to be tainting the gas (from the color and smell anyway). I will clean the banjo filter and see where that leaves me... I'll replace fuel line too... Can I use parts store fuel line or are these some proprietary sizes?
  7. Ok... so here's what I found: goop in the little hoses that run from the bottom of the fuel bowl up to the rest of the carb. Cleaned it all out with carb cleaner... I still can't get it to run. I took the top off the carbs, cleaned the jet needle and hole and sides of the suction piston... the lifter now moves freely. It will "run" with starter fluid, so I know I have spark. I don't think I have fuel coming up into the air/fuel chamber... even if I manually push the lifter while cranking. (There is fuel in the float chamber.) What am I missing? Mark
  8. Thank you... that was one of the random thoughts that crossed my turkey-deprived mind. I'll look for that info in the FSM as a guide (gotta love the FSMs) Thank you, happy thanksgiving! Mark
  9. Trying for a Thanksgiving Day 1st start on my new-to-me and not-started-in-20 years 240z. I have it all fluid changed etc etc... It cranks fine. It "starts" with starting fluid. Problem: I have fuel to the carb area.... I know this because I am getting fuel flowing out of 2 ports into the air cleaner assembly... but ut's not starting. I understand that I might still have electrical/ignition issues. I istalled a Pertronix unit and do not KNOW that it is working properly. But my concern at the moment is this fuel issue. What's going on here? THANKS, Mark
  10. I am hoping to score these parts... buy them or at a pick-n-pull I hope to get to soon... I saw some info regarding the early 280ZX distributor upgrade so I have something to work with - it mentioned the wire connector. In the mean time I need something to use to get the engine running (for the first time since 1985) as it is missing the coil... Mark
  11. I sent you a PM but frankly I like your set-up best...
  12. Best & cheap.
  13. Yike$$$$
  14. Thanks... I started down that road but thought it better to ask before I did something bad. On mine in each side I have 1 screw and one security screw... Looks like it Dremel time! THANKS!!!
  15. How can I remove the ignition cylinder? I'm in as far as having the switch off the back but I don't know how to get the cylinder out! Mark
  16. Is there a specific part number for the pertronix ignitor for the 240 application? What other items are needed (if any) to use this ignitor?
  17. I will pull the distributor and see what I can see... any info on specifically how to check run out on these distributors would be appreciated.
  18. I was reading about a 280 distributor/GM coil etc combo to upgrade my 240 to electronic ignition... Is this the "best", the "easiest" or the only, way to go? I'd like to get rid of the points system if it's not a BIG DEAL to do so. (I need to buy a new coil anyway since my 240 came without one! And I'll be buying full tune up parts too, so now seems to be a good time to do it "better") Any info would be appreciated... Mark
  19. If you register for the site it seems that it is editable...? My entry stuck, although I don't know if others can see it.... HLS30-29673...?
  20. Thanks for the info. Yes, it'll be an occasional driver car and I'm not interested in any major upgrades at this point. I know from my experience in the Land Cruiser world that there are electronic module upgrades for the existing Toyota distributor. One can also swap up to an electronic equipped distributor in many cases - all making this a simple upgrade. Given I need to buy a coil anyway, and I'll be doing a full tune-up parts replacement this seems like a good time to go electronic... IF the parts are "known"... I don't want to be breaking any new ground here. But I still need to know if they sold me the wrong coil!
  21. I found this: http://www.editgrid.com/user/mlwilliams/Z_Car_Registry It would be very interesting to see this all plotted out on a map too.
  22. I need some help figuring out if I was sold the wrong ignition coil. See this thread for more info... http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36350
