Cutaway Engine
There have been so many cutaway NON runners done over the years, of so many types of engines. I wanted to see if I could achieve a runner L6 The only investment is really only my time. Parts were donated. When one is in his late sixties I do have time. Z cars are my hobby.

Cutaway Engine
We are on the same page it would seem. At the moment it idles slow enough to hear the firing strokes.I think to run on one, It just needs added weight to the flywheel to keep the momentum going till the next firing stroke. And remove the rings from all the remaining pistons to reduce drag. I have had people say this would not run on three--I would like to see if it can run on one. It might sound a little odd though.:classic:It would not really have to run slower than at the moment.

You know, i didn't think of blocking off the unused intake ports . Doh!! Thanks for that Sarah. When our shows are finished I will do a bit of experimenting with two flywheels.

240z Distributor help
There is no such thing as a dumb question, and asking is how we all learn. Some people are afraid to have a go, and learn nothing. Looks as though you have the cam timing correct.

Notchy shifting from 1st to 2nd on my 78 280Z 5 Speed
Can you engage gears easily from stationary? Does the car creep with your foot on the clutch?

I do know there is quite a gap between 2nd and 3rd in this gearbox from a JDM. Fairlady.

240z Distributor help
Always number the SPARK PLUGS from the front of the motor. 123456. The dis. will fire spark to each plug in turn as the rotor in the dis. rotates in an anti clockwise direction. You would appear to have number 1 marked correctly at the dis. redo the rest to read 153624. which is the firing order for a six cylinder engine. The rotor is at the top when you take off the dist.cap. Do NOT THINK of numbers 123456 at the dis. but 153624. What you need to understand is that as the rotor in the dist. rotates it delivers a spark one at a time, in the correct order, to the plugs. Where you have numbered 123456 on the distributor should read 153624. Then number the spark plugs 123456 and place the wires from the numbers on the distributor to the corresponding numbers at the spark plugs. So number 1 wire from the dis. goes to number one spark plug. Second wire from the dis. goes to number 5 spark plug, third wire goes to number 3 spark plug, fourth wire goes to number six spark plug, fifth wire goes to number two plug, and the last wire goes to the only plug left which should be number four plug. Edit-- Hope this helps, and if the cam timing is right it should start. Then think about fine adjustments to the dist.

It was actually from a Japan Domestic Fairlady 2000cc. But then it may not have been origional to that car either. My understanding is fourth is direct drive on a these gearboxes, (but then I may be wrong), and fifth is an overdrive.

72OJ. If you want a relaxed type of drive, fit an R180 diff from an auto 240-260-280 Zed. 3.545 ratio. It will stuff your speedo reading, which is an easy fix. Just change the speedo drive on the side of the gearbox. My 72 with five speed and auto diff in fourth does 3000 RPM at 60mph . Change to fifth and revs drop to around 2600 at 60 mph. I seldom use fifth.

sr20det swap in 240z
If you are already short of dollars to buy the CAR , then I doubt that you will ever have enough to finish swapping in a SR20det. What everyone said. Stick with the L series . Brilliant engines.

locating quality parts
Google Motorsport Auto as well. Prompt service. Others will chime in with many other suppliers.

Happy new year!!( sorry this isn't Z related)
And us down here as well.:classic:
- Just bought '72 240Z. Using a lot of gas?

latest progress on 240
Good going. Keep at it.

Cutaway Engine
Thanks for the ideas. I have tried removing spark plugs 2 and 3 and it will run, sort of, on two cylinders, but not happy on one. Maybe the drag of the piston rings is holding it back. I have a spare flywheel that I will bolt on and carfully give it a go. This thing only needs to idle, but a runaway flywheel even at idle would not be a good thing. We have a club show early Feb. and we want this to be running for that, so I don't want to experiment any further at this stage. Brian.

Lost original key with no spare
Yes, What were they thinking making three different keys for our cars??

Broken broken ! how could I fix this
Don't try to wind it out all in one go. Out a little then in a little, Out a little more then in a little. And what Fastwomen says. Don't wind it out hot.

Cutaway Engine
Yes it is indeed a sink trap 5thhorseman. Dang it, I thought I had got all that hair ball outa there!! It's actually the muffler( a ball of brass pot scrubber held in with a couple of wires going through the pipe.) Thanks for the thumbs up folks. Sarah, your flywheel idea could be good. I don't want to increase the diameter, so would it have the same effect just to add more weight? I could bolt an extra flywheel to the existing one, and that would not effect the starter operation. Brian.

Cutaway Engine
Here is a link to the engine running. Due to excessive bearing clearance, it has a bit of a rattle on start up, until a bit of oil pressure builds up. and it is not as loud as it sounds. The camera seems to amplify the noises.

Broken hood latch cable
I had the same only I was lucky that the latch had released , as the cable broke. Have a look at this. Click on the link. .http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?34026-hood-wont-open&highlight=broken+hood+cable Good luck. Oh, and I got a complete cable from Motorsport Auto. Great service.

Looking for Recommendations
Riveted on fibreglass, large cracks in the paint= expensive body work. Camber problems!! Sounds like a shonky car to me.

Thinking outside the square. Thats a damn good compressor idea Blue.:bulb: Unfortunately I don't have the space.

Cutaway Engine
Thanks for your constructive input Blue. She runs quite happily on 1 2 3 as you suggested. LD 28 cranks are quite sort after down here as well. Some of the race guys are running strokers, and with good success.---$400 US for a crank?--Lordy we are sitting on a goldmine down here. These diesels came in to NZ in the eighties in second hand Japanese imports, so they were fairly common, but getting scarcer. Hi Tim. Come to the Intermarque Concours at Ellerslie in Feb. and God willing, we and it will be there. Merry Xmas all. Brian .

Cutaway Engine
Update on this cutaway engine. I was given an L28 all in bits by a friend. Block, head, crank, pistons and rods, and a box full of assorted parts, nuts and bolts. Spent a week sorting and assembling. Had the wrong crank for a start(LD 28) Managed to exchange it for L28. Cut windows in 4 and 6 cylinders, and 4 5 6 crancase. Fitted grease nipples to rear 4 mains and 4 5 6 conrods. Blocked oil holes in the block that feeds those mains. Cut the rear off the rocker cover. cut a section from the side of the head, so 4 5 6 valves can be seen moving, and the inlet and exhaust ports are sectioned. Cut the rear off the manifold. Retained a 240 Z inlet manifold and twin carbs, but just sucking off the front carb. It runs well and idles very smoothly , and is sitting on its own carriage. Will do some video over Xmas. Cheers.
