turn signals or fuse box broken?
Wow, a battery unfastened is very dangerous. I once had a battery explode on a tractor. I accidently shorted the terminals with the engine running at full revs. I had lifted the metal lid covering the battery, and dropped it on the terminals. Big explosion, and battery acid everywhere.:stupid::stupid: None on my face luckily.

Hey guys! Odd cutting out and misfire (electrical or something else?...hmmm)
Even if the valve seals are 'toast' that would not be your problem. If the engine smokes when you accelerate after coasting down hill, can be a sign of valve seals 'toast' Does the engine use much oil?

head lights are out please help fine ppl of classic zcar
I have had this twice on my 240. Once was a bad solder joint at the switch. Easy fix. Second time a tiny plastic plunger thing had worn in the switch. I fashioned one from a tiny piece of plastic knitting needle. Bit fiddly, but it's still good after 5 years.

L28 Cylinder Order
I remember from my youth, a friend sprayed the entire engine including all the electrics with silver paint. Quite a pretty sight on a dark night with the engine running. Sorry for a bit of hijack.

The great TEXAS Z Car (and foreign Car) rally - 2011
Hell, This sounds amazing.:bulb: A little far to come from NZ though. My wife and I love this sort of event. (or at least I do and she comes anyway) Good luck with this. Brian.

No power to fuel pump
Sarah, I'm most impressed in your problem solving skills. I could not handle the stress of problems like this. Thank goodness I have a 240.

Looking good. I agree that flames don't do a thing for a Z.

re-carbed, and now over heating? engine degreaser? water pump fail?
Temp looks OK. Good you have it sorted. What I meant was to LOOSEN the clamps on the engine side hose, and with the engine running, move the hose around on its pipe stub, so that you burp out the air and some water, then tighten the clamps with the engine still running, and a water hose from your garden tap trickling into the radiator. Worked for me twice.

The symptoms you mention (cold radiator and hot engine). sounds as though you have an air lock in your block. This is what I did, and it seemed to fix the problem. Loosen the hose clips on the hose that runs along the right side of the block, then start the engine. With engine idling, grasp the front hose clip area of the hose, and give it a few twists. You will probably see air bubbling from around the hose. don't forget to top up the radiator as you go, then tighten the hose clips. I have had to do this a couple of times after draining the water. The smoke you mention, at a guess, would be the degreaser burning off .

What is this part?
This looks very basic. Unscrew the whole fitting and get someone to braze a new piece of pipe on. Or do it yourself if you can. Or go to a hardware/ plumbing store and buy a 90 degree brass bend and some reducers to get down to the right size.

What On Earth, is THIS?
One remedy for a leaking rad was to crack an egg in there. Doesn't look like boiled egg though:)

Pressure Plate Positioning?
I would assume the reason to put the pressure plate on the same orientation would have to do with balance issues. I can't remember if the pressure plate on my 240 can only go on in one position. On a Massey Ferguson tractor I once had, some ham fisted mechanic stripped one of the pressure plate bolts,:stupid: and threaded to a larger size. The bolt he put in this hole was longer than the others, and that thing used to vibrate bad at full throttle. I had to pull the engine and rethread all the pressure plate bolt holes to correct it.

Your ability to tell a tale is indeed remarkable. Put this thread altogether in a small book. It is brilliant, and humerous.

Starter and battery connections should be the first place to look.

Just Bought a 240z. No clue where to begin.
Hey, and welcome. Sounds as though you are way ahead with a rust free 240. Good find. Just my 2c. Work on one problem at a a time till you get that sorted, then on to the next. I would be starting on the brakes first. Oops I see tlorber just said that as well. Good luck and have some fun. Brian.

Part identification, carbs.. sad 240 story too.
These are very rare down here. Even in this condition, if the rest is rust free, it's a cheap 240. $1000-buy it. Put round top SUs on it.

Exhaust gasses coming OUT of valve cover
Rob. Unless you are using excessive oil I would not be too alarmed. Sarah. I knew that you knew.:classic:

WattTheHeli
I remember several years ago, my brother in law decided to get a helicopter. It had a rotor span of nearly a metre. He flew it tied down, about half a metre from the ground for quite a while, then when he thought he had it sussed, he cut the string, and had another go. He got it about a metre into the air when it lurched sideways and destroyed itself against his house. Don't think he ever got another.

Exhaust gasses coming OUT of valve cover
Robftw. Sorry to hijack your thread, but the other is closed. Just a little geography for Sarah and others who may not know. Now I hope yall don't take offence at this. New Zealand is NOT in Australia. We are about 4 hours flying time to the right, In the Pacific Ocean. If we carry on east we come to South America. Australia is to the west. We have a poulation of over 4 mil. Auckland the largest city has a population over 1 mil. Auckland is situated on a narrow part and you can reach the ocean on either side in a few minutes. We have summers to die for and winters with the odd frost or two, but we can use our zeds year around. At the moment it is mid winter here. Today we have just had a light frost and it is shaping up to be a glorious day so we will take out the zed and go for a cruise. Once again Robftw sorry to hijakck and thanks. Brian.
