RIP Victor Laury
Hi all, I am saddened to read on Facebook that Victor Laury has passed. Victor was a long time Datsun fanatic and he helped build our club in the 'early' days. He was known to us as @Victor Laury and was one of the most helpful people I knew. He was a moderator and brought a huge ray of sunshine to our collection of pixels, 1's, and 0's. Victor was featured on our club years ago, and he drove 4 different Datsuns in his daily life. I raise a glass to Victor and wish him godspeed on his trip to Heaven, knowing that he will be driving in the sunshine with the top down. He was an inspiration to me and I treat every day as a privilege to be on this Earth. Victor, if you are reading this, we will miss you dearly and our thoughts and prayers go out to your family. Enjoy your special place in Heaven and we will meet again someday. Moderator Mike PS: I will never forget our common love for Faye Valentine. RIP my friend!

Oh man I am SO sorry to see this happen to such a good looking car! You must have been pretty upset at the shop. Even though they likely paid for it, this beautiful classic is gone. Hope you find a good replacement soon.

Rolling Shell with no VIN
Insurance would pay for it, otherwise I wouldn't be driving the priceless classic. Every stick built home I've purchased has a tax bill and deed that mentions each entity separately. Take a look at your taxes and you'll see what I'm talking about. If you tried tearing down a house, and building a new one, your mortgage lender has an agreement that requires the entire balance paid in full. Yes, I'm sure most everyone else is tired too. I'm unsure what this discussion accomplished, other than confirming VIN modification is a very confusing topic. All I know is that I would NEVER buy a car that has VIN problems like the ones we discussed above. On a Z, the VIN is engraved into the unibody (the frame). IF that doesn't match the title in hand, my recommendation is to walk away from the deal.

If it's priceless, I would repair it to maintain the matching serial numbers. Since the accident was caused by someone else, they will be paying the bill. The shell is a vital part to a numbers matching (priceless) vehicle. Other parts of the car, hood, windshield, doors, can be changed but if they are original the value would be higher. If you are talking about value, the estimator will establish what is correct. If you're talking law, it's the DMV. A house typically sits on land, which are shown as two different entities on your deed. It's much different than a title to a car. Now, if you're talking about a house and changing the windows, for instance, this would be a better example. In many cases, swapping the windows on a house will increase the value. But if you demolish a house, the possession certainly changes. You now become a landowner until the new house is built and a new deed can be created. You likely didn't tell them that it now has a new frame and body. Legally, it's rolling around on an old VIN that needs to be approved by your local DMV. They have processes to follow to maintain legal status. I've seen some crazy stuff happen with people who import vehicles with mismatching VIN's and they've had to send the cars back. m

Here's a legal document from the feds on this issue. See section 565. This was in the useless links I shared earlier... CFR-2005-title49-vol6-subtitleB.pdf

Dude, now I know you're trolling... Let's get back to the original question. Should this guy be concerned if the sheriff and the appraiser told him to ignore the frame VIN? If he has paperwork to back this up, he may be fine. But, I would definitely look at making the papers match the registration as much as possible. Even if it's to make the selling process work out better in the end. I know I wouldn't buy a car that has a different frame VIN.

https://auto.howstuffworks.com/buying-selling/vin.htm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_identification_number https://www.dmv.org/vehicle-history/vhr-reveals.php They all state the VIN must match the registration. In the case of lazy workers, they may simply look at the VIN on the door. But a deeper reveal may indicate some kind of fraud if the VIN on the frame is different than the registration paperwork.

@tzagi1 the US has different DMV laws depending on the state. However, most states agree that a VIN is assigned to the frame of a production car. In the case of a Z, the VIN is assigned to the unibody. Legally, the registration will need to change VIN numbers if you change the body.

Welcome to clubs
Hi @70 Fairlady Z, your new club is set up. Next step is to invite members to the club. You can see members and other features by using tabs just below your logo header. I am typing this message in the topic area I created. You can also add new features such as a calendar to the club by clicking "Manage Club" from the first page (right side). Let me know if you need any help! Mike
