gas tank cleaning (not from z)
yeah i have saftey glasses for my auto class so ill be sure to wear them when doing it. also the reason im even bothering trying to clean it (other then the fact that im broke) is that its not actually eating away at the metal its more like crud stuck to the metal. it scrapes off and is good clean metal. i just cant get a scraper very far in haha

gas tank cleaning (not from z)
thanks blue! thats good info! i have a 2 litre of diet cola thats been in there for about a week i turn the tank every couple days. the only thing is i dont actually think its rust i think it may be lead from old leaded fuel or something. cause before i put the soda in there i scraped the edge with a screwdriver and it was clean metal under the crud... do you think those suggestions would still work?

glad you guys are showing interest! i havent gotten any emails saying i got repies so i got worried but its probably cause i posted it in an s30 discussion and it got moved didnt even think of putting it in a different section hahaha ok so here we go, first, id like to point out that im 18 and got the challenger when i was 14 so when you see pics you might wanna barf at some of the bodywork just keep in mind ive spent maybe 500 doing all the bodywork so far and 300 as a repro drivers floor haha anyways heres a link to the progress... http://www.forebodiesonly.com/forum/album.php?albumid=75 not sure if you have to be a forum member to view though so let me know how that goes second, a friend of mine suggested drain-o and i had thought of it too and although i think it would probably work well, what do i do with the drain-o when im done? third, the tanks super simple and has no baffles or anything just lots of crusty varnish stuff haha taking it to a car wash is a good idea too! i might try that if i dont do drain-o or something similar first and arne, thanks for moving it for me i didnt even think to do so and wouldnt know how if i wouldve thought of it after i posted it and i threw in some pics of my greatest achievement in automobile anything haha with the help and masterminding of my friends dad of course- gas tank cleaning (not from z)
this is kinda the wrong forum but ive found you guys to be much more responsive and nicer to talk to then the mopar guys on the challenger forum so ill ask you guys in stead. i pulled the sending unit out of the tank in my challenger to dump the red varnishy gas out and i found a nice little suprise! the gas has crystalized or something. it looks like rust but i scraped where i could reach with a screw driver and it looks like clean metal under the crystaly stuff so i think its just the gas doing something weird... anyone have any suggestions on a way to clean the tank out? i was thinking i could maybe stick a pressure washer in there or something but im not really sure... any help would be greatly appreciated!! thanks! i threw in a picture of the challenger too just for fun- change of plans
i didnt look at the center console to close to know if it was worth taking or not. it was towards the fence in the corolla area haha i only saw it cause i stood on the hump by the fence and caught the back quarter... yeah its a bummmer to see them there... weird that there was 3 of them there too- change of plans
there was most of the intake stuff i think and the body wasnt super rusty but the battery tray was gone... pretty much all the little good stuff that i woulda needed was gone but if you have a 2+2 its probably worth a peak- change of plans
haha yepp i went today and sure enough it rained... theres also a 2+2 there but theres not much left.. there is fi stuff though- change of plans
i have been working on some super simplified wiring diagrams as i want to seperate each individual circuit by itself to its own toggle switch. im sure i may be missing something here or there so feel free to critique the diagrams to make sure im not missing things XD on the dashlight diagram id like to make note that i drew a variable resistor as my dash light dimmer, however the plan is a guitar volume potentiometer.. i just didnt know how to draw one on a diagram so a vres gets the point across.. im kinda excited about that part too cause i think itll add some personal zest as ive never heard of anyone using a volume/tone pot on their car before, but i dont see why it wouldnt work... unless maybe the ohms are off or something stupid like that.. anyway should look cool on a future homemade dash and i went the relay route on the headlights so i could use smaller wire through the car and have a fatter wire straight from the battery to the lights... i cant think of any problems with this set up.. can anyone else see any?? haha want to make sure this is actually gonna work in real life- change of plans
haha good thing the chance of finding a turbo 4wd sub xt lsd is basically impossible haha but if its there im definetly crawlin in the mud haha at $26 ill wash my carharts haha- change of plans
ah no way! sweet i should go see if they have a gas cap... and a tach while im at it.. in fact, i may as well check for a sportage... and the tank of course... and actually, they probably have the drain **** i need... and i might check for a lsd subaru r160... geez louise i need a job haha here goes my challenger money XD thanks for letting me know!! ill be sure to see if i can get down there tomorrow!- change of plans
interesting haha i might just have to save up and invest huh- change of plans
dry ice? wow i never would have thought of that haha thank you!- change of plans
uh the floor is probably the worst part but i say probably because if its anything like my challenger then theres oodles of hidden rust blind to the naked eye the trunk really isnt that bad but i only peeled of the sound deadener on the one side so far.. the biggest problem here is i was specifically designating this vehicle to be a daily driver while i worked on my project car and at the moment its looking like an equally big project. the bodywork is done enough on the challenger so its time to reassemble it but the z is just starting on bodywork... but it runs and drives. but i dont have a title for the z although i can get one fairly easily.. i dont really want to get rid of the z as most wouldnt bother fixing it they would just find a donor shell.. so i might as well make it work and turn it into yet another mock race car to drive on the street (so far every car i own heads this route)... anyways if it comes down to a new shell theres really not much point because i dont have the means and usually people plan on pulling the l24 4 speed and r180 out.. so it seems silly to spend money getting a donor shell for my stock drivetrain.. anyway im just kinda rambling and thinking out loud. i guess my plan is to see what i can do to get some structural strength back as well as get a title and try to use it as a dd anyway.. i mean ive driven it the way it is so i know it can be done but i would certainly like a little more support if im actually gone take it out around other drivers- change of plans
and you will notice that in the floor picture everywhere theres paint... thats vinyl.. all the rust is where i pulled the vinyl out- change of plans
the trunk area has vinyl. and then under that its all orange.. but under the orange is in most areas more vinyl and then rusty metal under that vinyl. the trunk is much better then the floors but theres still some through rust near the pass shock tower and i also have some hatch latch rust as well as battery tray area rust and some bubbling in a few random spots..- change of plans
yeah thats pretty much the plan. i did tons of welding and cutting and such at my friends house on my challenger they had a really nice hobart 180 but the z is probably not going over there cause my challenger was there for 2 years haha but yeah i have a sawsall, compressor, cutting wheel and i can get some sheet metal too i just need the welder haha but i have another friend who races a rabbit at evergreen and he has a hobart too so if i cant get one for myself i can go there once i get the title. the main thing im concerned about is im not sure the best way to tackle the frame support things under the floor... i dont think theyre in very good shape :/- change of plans
haha thanks yeah im trying but as far as the welder goes, i dont have any money at all haha i have about 200 saved up towards little stuff for my challenger haha i dont have a job cause i dont have transportation at the moment- change of plans
sorry i know its not everyones favorite thing to hear about a z being abused /: as for the dash, i dont know when i will get around to doing it but it wont be right away because i dont have a welder so itll be after i can get the title taken care of and drive it to someone who does haha but its still a likelyhood and i will definetly post pictures of my progress! thanks for the encouragement!- rust
yup super rusty. both floor some trunk rust as well as the sway bar mount on the passenger side and the hatch latch panel and battery area. too bad i dont own my own welder haha- 1973_240z_lrqp
