Back from paint!
Looks great! I'm NOT a fan of yellow or variations of yellow, but I like this. It reminds me of the fridge we had when I was growing up Can't wait to see it all put back together!

Head gasket leak.
might be that the break in the gasket is small, and once the engine warms up, the gasket swells enough to seal itself.

Physical differnces between a 240 and a 280.
I just realized that there is one junkyard Z available for every 10,000 people in the city limits here.

Physical differnces between a 240 and a 280.
Pelican Auto Sales/One Stop yard in Klamath Falls has a ZX and 3 other Zs. They're in the u-pick yard but I have to wonder if a determined person could get one good car out of them.

wire for tach
Is it possible to buy a wire with the harness end on it to fit on the tach on my 240? I pulled on a speaker wire (from the engine bay) the other day to see where it went, and found that it was loosely connected to the tach, with some tape. Well, it ain't connected no more and reconnecting it in its current state looks like a lost cause. So if anyone has this wire or knows where to get one that'd be swell. What's the proper name of it for more precise searching, anyway? It's the stock coil and distributor set up.

1976 280z 2+2
I ended up with a similarly crazy 240z, and my steering is stiff as heck, too. I haven't gotten into the steering and suspension much yet- been just getting the engine running right and making sure everything's square there but I had been wondering if it was really that tight to steer or if my initial impression of the suspension- that everything was rusted together- is the problem. We'll see! Going to tighten some stuff down today and hook the tach back up, and it goes in for a gas tank dip and repair this week. Good luck on yours!

Toyota 4Runner Caliper Year Question
Ok... My '92 V6 4runner is getting new calipers and rotors Monday. I could save the old ones and put em on the Z after doing a rebuild on them? Rotors too, maybe? Also have a brand new MC, so maybe the day one goes on, rest should too? I'm just confirming because there seems to be a myriad of answers just in this thread, alone!

Z!
I love my Z too! Even though it hasn't been out on the road for actual driving since I got it... but I love going up to people in fancy new sports cars and saying "my car is sooo much cooler than yours". Hey, they don't have to know it's sitting in the garage, and the paint scheme is primer/"paint"/steel or that the interior is scattered all over the hatch area... They just need to know that, yeah, mine's way cooler.

Check List
My husband will surely appreciate this. I tend to be on the "scattered" side, and my version of organization is probably a brain-melter for him or anyone else with a logical, methodical preference for doing things. My list of things the Z needs for repairs and lists of procedures is surely maddening, being written on grimy paper in whatever pen is at hand with arrows and numbers and circles everywhere. I had been looking for a good maintenance log for a while and ended up making a spreadsheet to use and it works, but that's all.

Rear brake problem and stiffness of pedal
maybe a stuck wheel cylinder?
- New to the Z world.

oooold datsun
I have no clue who owns it right now. One day I'll stop in and ask about it, I'm sure. Good news! takin the Z down to get the gas tank fixed on it this week- tax refund came!

need some exhaust leak feedback
if it's an exhaust leak at the manifold or collector, you'll be able to hear it when the engine's running at any speed. The ticking will get faster as the RPMs rise. If it's down in the pipes somewhere it'll just sound like crap.

oooold datsun
I should be totally without shame and offer $50 for it. I would be SOOOOO busted for it though. I would get the steely-eyed glare and obnoxious passive aggressive BS about it for months. I'll stick with the 240

need some exhaust leak feedback
Are all your sealing points in the back of the car doing their jobs? From everything I've read here, it seems that air leaks around the hatch and tail lights, and sometimes the evap tank lines associated with it are the culprits for fumes inside. A search for fumes brings up more than a handful of in-depth discussions about them.

oooold datsun
Passed by this car more times than I can count. I always thought, ooo what a cool old datsun. Finally took a picture of it today! What is it?

240z alternator bracket

What I did today
Moved the little guy into the garage finally, today!

240z alternator bracket
Thanks Gary! Yeah, all the Zs at the yard had the brackets we needed. I think they're all 280s now that I've been out there a few times and combed them over for stuff. Shame they all have decent bodies but the engines and interiors are just picked over. Guy says they're probably headed for the crusher in a few months. It'll probably be a while before any more show up

240z alternator bracket
TExasZ, I got it, and I have seen your catalog of stuff for sale! I know I'll probably be needing some of it along the way- I bookmarked it.

Feature or Foul-Up
hehe. the key for my old truck did that. It usually fell out of the ignition. it was just old and worn down. Bonus was that anyone who locked themselves out of their 80s Toyota could borrow my key and get into theirs.

the glory and the agony- gas cap and seats
It was hard to tell if it was a z or a zx- i'm going sheerly on body style up there and I have not quite reached the level of Z identification that so many of you have. All the badges were off it, most of the engine top end was in the back deck and the number plates were off it (shoulda took note of the VIN.. grr). It had T-tops! It was an automatic, was FI judging by what was left of it in the back... butterscotch interior. The seats are vinyl and fabric. These tracks bolt to the front face of the body mount, rather than the top, though. They're just a wee bit wide but fit. Of the other 3, the seats were totally shot on one and missing (along with the hardware) on the other two. Maybe a trip back tomorrow to look at the hardware on the one.

What makes the z special to you?
a Z was THE car to have when I was in high school in the 80s. I ended up with a Galaxie, but have always wanted a Z. Had a chance to own one when I bought my old '86 toyota 4x4 truck- dude was selling the truck and a 2+2 Z (year escapes me) for 5k. I had no way to get two cars back to Phoenix from LA so I went with the Toyota, which served me extremely well for 12 years. Don't get me wrong- making that decision was really painful- but I was at a point where the truck was going to be much more useful. Now the truck and the horrible little beastie that replaced it are gone (truck lives on, though, at least) and I have a Z
