the glory and the agony- gas cap and seats
Played hooky today and went to the junkyard and we did some mucking around on Beeb afterwards. Dug around in the parts in ALL the cars (all 4 of them, yay) and FOUND a proper fuel cap. It was in a spare tire well of a 280. I pulled everything out of the insides of those cars looking for one, just in case. And because I'm so nice, I put it all back in. Now onto the seats. The ones we got were out of a 280z. We grabbed the tracks, too, when we got them. Beeb doesn't even have tracks in. The whatever seats that were in it have tracks but they don't match up. So, I guess now what I'm on the hunt for is a set of tracks or a mount for a 240, right? Then, I should be able to bolt the 280 seats onto the 240 tracks and mount and be done with it? I'm trying to avoid fabricating metal parts on this because that's not my gig at all- I'm a "certified JB welder" and that's as far as that kind of thing goes for me. Also found a place in town that does the dunk n repair on gas tanks, and I think I'll just happily roll on over there and let them do the work as far as removing the tank goes. Fairly reasonable, too. Just waiting for that tax refund to hit the bank... if anyone has a set of 240z tracks/mount/thingy they're willing to sell, please feel free to let me know! I've seen the brand new ones for sale, and i'll go with that if I haven't found anything used within a couple of weeks.

Price? Yah I didn't even look at that, actually. I saw the wing and grabbed a bucket real quick-like.

what damage makes a Z unrestoreable
"Obvious insanity in the work done by PO". I love that. So far, though, the insanity has been the worst part of Beeb. I can deal with the rest of it. But in many ways, it was like being handed a 5000 piece jigsaw puzzle of a blue sky with a single duck in it without a picture of the way the puzzle is supposed to look. I just keep coming across little things that make me yell, "Why would anyone DO THAT!?" Latest? tin snip cut out of the metal around the bolt hole where the front driver seat track bolts in. Really. Who cuts out a hole? There's no rust there. Granted, it's not as crazy as some of the stuff I've seen meth freaks do in the name of "fixing" something, but.. ehehe it's pretty close.:stupid:

That big ol' shopping cart handle on the back is a total deal breaker.

My new project
is there a gas cap in there anywhere?

Z Music
yah no thanks! We had an 8-track in our home system when I was growing up- even at 8 years old I thought, man, these things are crap! I'll be cruisin' 80s po-folks style, with a boombox in the back, for a while.

break cylinder removal
Thought the master on my 240 was bad, so we ordered one but in the meantime, for giggles and stuff, we bled and flushed the system at the wheel cylinders and pistons. Turns out the thing was mostly full of air with a little bit of burned up fluid one might have considered brake fluid at some point in the distant past. Tried that?

Z Music
I know this is old as dirt, but when I can finally get my Z out onto the highway, the first song I will be playing is AC/DCs "Riff Raff". And then, to be period correct, probably some Iggy and the Stooges, maybe a bit of Cream (NSU!), and then I'd have to pull over and decide which of Black Sab's 1970- 1974 releases would be next. And that would take a while, because I love ALL those albums

Painting it 901
Man, if you were my dad, every time you offered me the keys to drive it, little plumes of smoke would peel out from the heels of my shoes as I ran out the door to drive it! oh sorry... I should stay on topic. I think my 240 was silver first, but then at some point got primered, painted a different silver, then RIO primer, and now this fabulous peeling, cracking white "paint" that was laid on OVER the pinstriping.

240z Choke Cable Sticking
just got my choke working. We took out the console since it was broken into three pieces anyway, and then removed the duct tape that was wrapped around the lower part of the lever, sprayed the crap out of the cable and the lever with WD40 and made sure it was working at the carbs.. yay! You gotta hold the assembly in your hand and work the lever, but at least it works now.

Music players
Bass, first and foremost. Then, guitar (started after I learned bass), picked up the drums a couple of years ago. I played in a band on the Oregon coast for about 5 years and then when we moved to Klamath I realized how much I hated most of the music people around here like to play (and hear), so now i just jam in my kitchen, mostly. Er.. blew up my bass amp last spring and never got around to replacing it, too. 10 hour days at school and an early-ish Saturday work schedule sort of preclude making noise with people, too. I don't have any super cool expensive stuff. A Danelectro reissue guitar, a 63 Harmony H27, Ibanez GSR100 (i think? I never pay attention to this stuff, really) bass, a frankenguitar made in the late 50s, epi acoustic, estrella spanish classical thing, '57 Harmony Archtone with a warped top. Two cheap spanish style acoustics are out with kids learning how to play.

awesome
yeah I still need one ;P we grabbed one off the only car that had one. Almost all the labels were off the car but the plate in the engine bay said the displacement was 27 hundred something, and it had the access flaps on the fender. I'll get a pic of the gas cap later in case anyone needs one. Some decent interior parts on some of them. I'll have to hijack the neighbor kid's Radio Flyer next time. I'm debating about if I want to replace the dash with something "that'll do" or if I should just wait and keep my eyes peeled for a really nice one.

awesome
I just wanted to thank all you folks for cataloging such a huge volume of information in one site. I was able to come home from the yard today with an armload of parts from 260s and 280s for my 240 thanks to you guys. They were pretty well picked-over but I found some good stuff we can use. Seats! omg! yay! Fuel cap is an elusive little bugger, ain't it?!

240z alternator bracket
Thank you VERY much... Arne and zkars that is exactly what I needed to know.

240z alternator bracket
huh. yah that ain't what i have. That's all there is? what goes into the three bolt holes on the block by the alt? What came out were three sliders similar to this (they were all flat, though, without the bend) and the piece in my pics. Crap I wish the local yards were open on Sundays.

240z alternator bracket
Mine came with some mess of a thing that was a frankenstein of several other brackets and some alternator that didn't fit (thus, I guess, the homemade alternator "bracket"). The set up wobbled and shook so bad it was the first thing I took off when I got it home. Anyway, to the point- I don't think I have an original bracket (what I have is in my pics) for reference. I've been looking for a pic of just the bracket(s) with no luck. There are no 240s at the yard but there are two 260zs and a 280z. Will either of those brackets work? The replacement alternator is too wide to fit in the bracket- and I'm not sure, actually, with that in mind, which part is the wrong one.

fire?
Totally hoping to get the car roadworthy for summer, Bruce! But even if it isn't, if that's during the transition from spring term to summer term, I'd definitely like to come up to check it all out in our Bomba Azul (the 4runner).

fire?
I did, T-bone! Thanks! Haven't spent any time prior to now working with these cars- it's been EFI Toyotas since '95. So, it's a new vocabulary in some areas.
-
fire?
aha. Got it. I WAS confused. there are flat top pistons AND flat top carbs? Am I languishing in American musclecar-headedness when I hear about differently shaped "tops" and think immediately of pistons instead of carburetors?
-
fire?
I may be just confused about terminology. I'll poke around some more and see if I can square it up.
-
fire?
So, what's this I've read a couple of times about the 240zs with flat-top pistons tending to catch on fire? I'm assuming that's what mine's got in it until I open it up and find out otherwise. What can a person do, besides change these out (if they do indeed tend to catch fire) to minimize the chances of it happening? Thanks!

z marks the spot
Rather amusing... what often ends up happening now is that my husband does the work and I show him what to do or how to get something working again. He's not really a "car guy" but enjoys the challenges and is looking forward to this one. My dad was a high school auto tech teacher and after high school I went to a crap voc school for auto tech. Never got around to getting ASE (I love brakes! how weird is that?!) certified in anything because, honestly, a pretty awful drug habit got in the way, but I understand how the systems work, know which cars I like and ain't afraid to get covered up to the armpits in 40-year-old oil leak remnants. My first car was a '63 Galaxie and I spent more time fiddling with that thing than I did with most of my friends. I haven't been so excited about a car SINCE the Galaxie, either (about 20 years ago!). I sit in school and try to pay attention to my classes and all I can think about is how far away Zunday is I've always tried to show my chick friends how to deal with their cars, too. It's unconscionable to me that some of them can't even find their radiator overflow. And I honestly don't even know what to say to guys I meet that only know that you put gas in a car and it runs. Here's a shorty story about how we are about the cars: The 4runner has a flappy plastic wheelwell cover - prior owner, I think, had a tire blow out with separating treads and it shredded up some things on that side. So, this thing is flapping while we're on the I-5 coming back from Springfield and he pulls over and says, "YOU gotta do something about that. It's driving me nuts". I consider the pouring rain, then dutifully go out and look at it again probably for the 20th time. Rummage through the 'Fo for a few minutes and find a set of my guitar strings. These are like $20 a set silver things that I'd been holding off on using for a while. Grumble, remove the low E from the set and tie the flappy thing back together with it. Now, there's a big ol' guitar string sticking out of the fender area. I imagine it wildly flapping against the paint. Rummage some more. No tape of any kind anywhere to be found, but found my ice skates and cut the guitar string. Boy, did I growl about the guitar string for a while. "You're lucky we had guitar strings in here. If it were extra bass strings, you would have just had to make the trip to nuts".

We spent Sunday working on it. Since the new, complete m/c wasn't here yet, we went ahead and flushed the brakes. Got pedal- there was some fluid in the system but it was mostly air. Got the alternator out but could not put the new one in because... surprise! The bracket belongs to something else, also. Looked at the spark plugs and they're all covered in gas. Discovered a leak in the gas tank that had been "repaired" with silicon or caulk or something similar. In the process of doing the brake flush we looked at all the wheel cylinders and calipers and they're in decent shape. No leaks from the cylinders or calipers, and they're all in working order. A lot of pad left on the front, but rotors with a light coating of rust. Needs new choke cables (figured), points are barely hanging on in there, rotor has rust all over it, distributor cap is all chomped up but at least the contact points have worn smoothly and there aren't any tracks or other disturbing signs. I got a cover on it last night- we have to clean the garage out for this thing (if it moves us to clean out the garage, it must be awesome, i guess). That's next week's chore. Rain is coming so I just figured "let's not give this rusty thing an opportunity to rust even more". Took some pictures of it and uploaded them. Did not get a shot of the fender cover (yah I dunno what what this is called- it's rusted on the outside, but not the engine side) on the passenger side and the gi-normous hole it has. I suppose next Saturday I'll hit the two local yards looking for the proper alternator bracket- I'll have exactly an hour and a half to find one if one is there.
