Hot-start issue with EFI - who has it, who doesn't
And let me add that what I thought was a "hot restart" earlier this year was not. It is the oxygenated fuel we have to use during winter months. Makes the car seem like its running lean, leaner than it should.

Hot-start issue with EFI - who has it, who doesn't
Hey Zed, I also have the FJ3's and exhaust header installed with no hot restarts.

No cold start......
Definitely not experiencing the "hot restart" problem. When I spent some time in Las Vegas (17 years) I had the hot restart problem a few times but not every time. Not sure the outside hot temps has anything to do with it but maybe? I don't recall but has anyone inquired about the daily temps when the issue is present? As far as the bypass screw goes, you should absolutely see small changes between rich and lean. Drastic changes with the "clock spring" and fine tuning changes with the bypass screw. Wonder if its due to the "pot" you have wired into the cold start circuit. After I told you 5 hrs last night I decided to double check to see how long she holds pressure and it doesn't even hold for 2 hrs so..... But not an issue yet. When it starts causing a problem I will tackle it. See purs like a happy kitty right now and I am jazzed. Don't know if you read my thread on the emissions test but it's nice to see hard work pay off, for a change. CA is really strict and more so in some counties.

No cold start......
Hi FastWomen, I had a thought last night regarding the Z running a little lean. It showed it in the emissions test I just had so I knew I could richen her up a bit. So I adjusted the bypass screw in about a full turn and when I started her up this morning it fired up the way it is supposed to, right away. So if it does the same tomorrow morning I'll know that I have fixed the problem, so to speak. And my fuel pump check valve is bad, doesn't hold pressure past 5 hours. So I think that is pretty good. I wired in a toggle switch to the CSV about five years ago while I was waiting for my thermo time switch to show up. It worked perfectly for that whole week. Better than the cold start system "sometimes". If I ever need to wire the toggle back in it's in my toolbox ready to go.

No cold start......
Ok so this morning she fired right up like she normally would. It was 54 degrees F when I started it. Now I know when the cold start will work and not work.
-
No cold start......
It isn't an issue really. I dont have to have the cold start working but it would be nice. I just know there is a problem somewhere and that I don't like.
-
No cold start......
It usually fires right up. Now I have to crank it over twice and then it stumbles for a couple of seconds and then idles around 1400 rpm until it starts to warm up.

No cold start......
No, the fuel pressure doesn't hold. I have a gauge on the "supply" side between filter and rail and it drops off over a few hours. Maybe I just think it should be cool enough for it to work. Im in Oxnard, a few degrees cooler than Ventura. Right now at the Oxnard Airport it is 67 degrees. This morning when I tried starting it it was 59 degrees, should have worked then. Seems odd that it would only open between 57 and 72 degrees. What if its -57 degrees?

No cold start......
That would be a no. Touch them together and I get 0.00

No cold start......
So am I to understand correctly that If I get a "1" on the meter after testing for resistance on the other pin that means I have zero resistance? If thats the case then the thermotime is good.

No cold start......
And that reading was one of the thermotime tabs to a ground, I should add.

No cold start......
BTW, thanks for being patient for I have next to no experience with electrical, like you couldn't already tell.

No cold start......
Zed, with the meter set at 200 ohms I measure 62.2 ohms. Which should be the same as the temp (62 degrees) in the garage correct?
-
No cold start......
Zed, I just noticed your post. We must have posted at the same time.
-
No cold start......
I guess I don't have a clue....can't get a reading of any kind from the thermotime switch now! What gives? What am I doing wrong?
-
No cold start......
Zed, yes ThermoTime switch.
-
No cold start......
Oops, didn't have meter set on ohms. What I get for trying to do it without my eyes on . Anyway, I was getting a reading of 1,876 ohms and I believe it should be around 2900, maybe? But after a couple of seconds it would read a "1" on the meter. Guess I should adjust meter to next level and read it again.

No cold start......
So I haven't had cold start in the mornings here and I should because it is usually below 60 degrees when I go to work. I noticed its been harder to start my Z for the past 2 weeks. I measured the TT this morning and I should have got a reading somewhere around 2.96, ambient temp is 59 degrees. I got no reading, 0.00. So off to find a TT. I wonder what killed it? Its only about 4 years old.

Replaced Steering Rack Bushings
Hmmm...details Captain, that would be great info! I have often said, wish I could do my own alignment.

Woohoo!
Right captain, The temp is usually around 58-62 degrees when I go to work. I removed starter wire from starter and usually when you turn the key to the "start" position you can hear the CSV energize, click. That no longer happens. It is a little cooler here right now, 54 degrees, so I will try it here soon. As soon as I have my coffee So far I know the CSV works if I apply 12V to it. I must have been tired last night when I thought FI relay. TT is about 4 years old and they seem to rarely go out. The only reason I replaced it 4 years ago was just because I had a new one. Will post what I find in a new thread.

Woohoo!
Captain, As Lenny said, he has my AFM I wanted to use but everything has worked out. I do have a cat and it is CA specific. All other 49 states can use different cats. The only change was the timing tweak and I have since then put it back to about 12 BTDC where she really likes it, other than the AFM tweaking a couple weeks ago. But I didnt have to do a thing but bump the timing today for it to pass. Lenny, Take your time. Somebody upstairs was looking out after me because the AFM I have on the Z right now is an original one and I really didn't think it would pass emissions. I thought it was worn out until about 2 weeks ago. So I tweaked and tweaked until it was right. So with that said if you would like to keep it longer you can. Now I have to trouble shoot the cold start system. It has not been working for about 2 weeks. Harder to get her started in the am. Use to fire right up even with the fuel pump check valve not working. CSV does work when I supply 12V to it so it's probably in the FI relay.

Woohoo!
I hear ya man. Its a PITA sometimes. But then I go to the beach and watch all the babes go by and enjoy a cold one. Its worth it to me. For now anyway !

Woohoo!
Yeah she passed emissions testing today! Actually passed with flying colors. I will post the results at the end of this thread. I usually run the timing around 12-13 degrees BTDC. That was the only thing I adjusted today before the test. I set it back to 10 BTDC. For the past 3 months I have been adjusting on the AFM tweaking it here and there trying to find a happy medium. Guess I found it. As you can see in the numbers she is running pretty clean. All stock except for the air filter and exhaust. I just make sure all the electrical connectors are corrosion free. In the past I would give a complete tune up. But not this time. I really didn't have the time. It just goes to show that if you stay on top of these old cars they will perform well and run clean. Here is the test results. The first 2 pics are easier to see. Hope its better than the one below.

She is a beautiful little girl. Lucky man! Glad all is well! And good to hear from you.

HellFire Status & release date annouced
Yeah hopefully as is good. Sometimes I lack sleep just because I can't sleep, not due to having children. So I can only imagine.......
