I guess I haven't either. Must just be a personal preference type of thing.

I see there a couple o-rings in the striking guide, maybe I can look there for something out of the ordinary?

I wish it could be so simple. This actually sounds like its coming from the floor area. But it wont hurt to check the shift knob.

Found the ZX fsm so I wont need that bit of info

On my 77 280 that was fitted with a ZX five speed in 1992 has now developed a rattle in the stick shift. Like a metal on metal sound. It is an 81 IIRC. My receipt has faded and I can't tell for sure. But I'm pretty sure it is an 81. Trying to recall a single junk yard purchase that long ago, well..... Anyway, normally you would replace the 2 shift pin bushings and that would take care of it. Not this time. When I drive it the rattle is REALLY noticeable in the forward 3 gears, 1st, 3rd, and 5th. Most noticeable in 3rd. If I rest my hand on the stick shift it almost goes completely away. Instead of only replacing the 2 bushings I had purchased a kit containing the 3 bushings, pin, and "E" clip and installed them. Going to remove the center console AGAIN and see what I can find. Any ideas of what it could be? And if someone could post a pic of a ZX 5 speed break down for that particular location I would appreciate it.

Autozone here does not carry it. O'Riellys does so i'll check them out tomorrow.

It should have sealed it. Took it for a spin and it's been sitting now for over an hr and still dry. Nope, it's the opposite. 5 mph slower than I'm going. But still ok. Think I've gotten used to it.

Finally had the time to jack her up and replace the leaking seals. New top hat (inside cable end), seal, and o-ring. Used the top portion of the screwdriver to seat the seal in the pinion housing, pic 1. Simple job. Now for the not so good news. Discovered I have a 19 tooth gear (pic 3) still in this tranny. I could have sworn I took the 17 tooth out of my 4 speed to put in the 5 speed transplant about 20 years ago, hmm.... Oh well, its only 5 mph diff on the speedo. Never equated that diff to be the reason for the incorrect speedo reading because I've always thought the pinion gear was correct. Not sure if I want to be bothered with getting and installing a correct one right now. Something tells me I will though.

Wow Chickenman, very informative! Thought at one time on this site someone made comment to the fact that "cat" cars should not use high ZDDP oils. So maybe it wasn't this site. I want to use the t4 oil and didn't because of the "internet misinformation" you speak of. I'll have to check to see if it's available in CA. Could that be an issue, maybe? Hmm....will have to check that out. Thanks for the info!

How about those of us out there with catalytic converters? Will it harm it?

Very nice! I've just started looking into leds for my gauges. Perfect timing. Did anyone notice the clock works? That's rare.

Can you post some pics so the members can see what you are talking about. Especially for those that are close to sending they're dash in to said name above.

We did with no issues. Just had to wear masks for a few days because of the smoke. I feel so sorry for the victims of the fire and mudslides. Finally got to drive the freeway thru the slide areas, sad to see. The 101 was closed for 2 weeks! But they are a very strong community and they will pull through this for sure. It is but getting expensive. I've known Mike since 1986, a year after I bought my 280. He used to smog it for me. Very thorough person. He is no longer in business, bummer. It is still there. If you ever make it out this way we'll have to meet up for coffee, soda, or a beer, whatever you prefer. And if remember this guy in Santa Paula let me know.

Do you know a "mechanic" by the name of Michael Sherfey? Had a shop, Sunwest Motorsports IIRC.

esmit208, I really appreciate You chiming in. I'm not convinced that I want to attempt it. I want nice clean weld lines and I know I wont get it without the proper training. Don't get me wrong, I want to try my hands at welding but on something I could handle while standing on my feet and not lying on the ground. Its been on my mind off and on today. My gut is telling me not to try this as my first weld. I'm going to search shops in this area so lets see what I come up with.
  18. So you do not have a fuel pressure gauge installed? I thought you did. I would install one. You can watch for variances in pressure during this problem.

Looking for a straight no rust (light surface okay) 77-78 stock hood. Don't need the vents, or hinges. And quite possibly the fenders complete with headlight scoops.
  20. This is all the info I could find. Usually you can tell by looking at the advance pod whether or not its adjustable. The datsun pods have a glue glob covering an adjustable screw. Hooking one up is a simple 3-wire connection, and they come with your choice of adjustable mechanical and/or vacuum advance, self-lubricating bushings, and a Super-Duty cap and rotor.
  21. I don't know anything about them but it might be faster to get that info by contacting mallory directly?
  22. Have you observed your fuel pressure as it does this? I'm curious as to what its doing at that time. "Quiting" means engine stops?

The charcoal color I posted earlier matched my panel almost perfect. My panel was just ever so slightly lighter in color. So I figure it was due to fade and the color was a good match. I like the way it turned out.

Couldn't have said it any better CO.
