Eiji was kind enough to provide some photos from throughout the build. I thought I'd share a few of them before discussing the final product. Here's the donor L28. We struck out on a multitude of blocks and heads, and ultimately used this N47 head to move things along. The block proved to have some issues in a cylinder, and we used another L28 (F54) from his stock. Block all cleaned up: Clean L28 Crankshaft; Flat-Top pistons: Buttoning the bottom end up: Lots of neat in-process photos. Here's some photos of the N47 head, complete with the DSI STR2.8B Camshaft:

Best Cost for the Buck
That's a very interesting question, and it's one I had to wrestle with recently myself. In my '70, the Numbers-Matching block had pitted a bit in one cylinder, and the cost to (a) bore the cylinder, and then ( sleeve the cylinder added about $450-550 to my machine shop bill. I'd have to look at the invoice to be sure, but an L24 block could have been obtained and honed for cheaper than that, to be sure. Whether that ~$500 bill to retain it's Numbers-matching status will impact the sales price when/if that day ever comes, I have no idea. When buying a classic Datsun, would anyone pay an extra $500 to know they're getting a fully-rebuilt, numbers-matching engine in their Z? Would you say it differs by model? I'm happier knowing it matches though.

'71 Diff Mount?
Looks like '70-'71 Differential Mount is NLA? Can I safely use the '72 mount in my Mar-'71 car? Motorsport! Differential Mount Insulator, 70-71 240Z - The Z Store! Nissan-Datsun 240Z-260Z-280Z-280ZX-300ZX(Z31/Z32)-350Z-370Z Parts Reading this, I'm wondering if the NLA version is just the early one referenced here: Differential mount difference 240Z | DATSUN 240z | JDM CAR PARTS Appreciate any insight. I need an enclosed carhauler 18 to 20 feet
DC Craigslist revealed this one. Doesn't help you much down in FL, unless someone on UShip.com is willing to truck it down for cheap: 24' ENCLOSED CAR TRAILER / HAULER

In need!!!!
I'm four hours away in Falls Church, VA. I have the L24 I pulled a month ago to replace with an L28. It has an E88 Head with a slalom-grind camshaft. It could use a good going through, but I don't intend to ever reuse it.

Competition Headers NLA
John that's incredible. Really a thing of beauty

240z Inspection Light Source?
I'm not sure whether the original color was silver or gold, but Easton sells a spray-kit that imitates gold-cadmium plating. Not cheap though, and I think you have to buy three different cans. I have no experience with it.

Competition Headers NLA
I suppose when your entry point is a $99,000 Viper instead of a $1,500 Datsun, your price sensitivity to such things is in a different ballpark. Not even ballparks, actually. I'm in the ballpark. They're probably at the Polo Grounds or the Fox Hunt.. .er.... the Fox Hunt Track. Perhaps I'll get there in time! Your point is well taken, though. I see some others for our cars that are $1,500-2,500. $900 isn't so bad.

Competition Headers NLA
Unfortunately, neither has any other part of this project... not sure I can justify their cost, but they do look good. Thanks John, Steve, Leon.

Can I wrap a coated header?
Realize I forgot to thank you all for your input - Sorry for the belated response.

Competition Headers NLA
I finally worked up the stones to order a set of these, and just got an email saying they're NLA. I thought I'd seen the P/N in the Nissan Motorsports catalog - looks like I was using the 2010 version. Sure enough, they're missing from the 2012 catalog. Nismoparts.com - Your #1 Source for OEM Parts and Accessories Bummer. The MSA ones don't appeal to me and the Stahl ones would require skipping a few meals this month. The search continues.

New tires arrived; being mounted today. 225/50/15 Toyo R888's. Funny how some tires help you feel like the project is coming together. I might not have anything in the car by way of a drive-train at the moment, but darned if I don't have some new rubber. Eiji should be done with the new motor this weekend, and hopefully by Sunday I'll have the new Datsun Spirit motor back home.

240z Inspection Light Source?
Starting to feel like I was literally the only one in the world who couldn't get my hands on them. Finally: Nissan came through: Thank you everyone for the useful advice and help.

tail light disassembly
I believe I removed the wiring harness & bulbs, and then soaked the entire taillight assembly in warm, soapy water. Used a big pot to submerge the whole thing. That softened the glue/gasket, and some gentle prying with a flat-tip had them apart easily. Maybe there's a better (Read: More Professional) way, and I'm sure someone smarter than I will chime in.

240z Inspection Light Source?
The 10W00 is the P/N for the Datsun 720 Truck. It supersedes P/N 26740-89904. I believe the P/N you're referencing is likely the 240z P/N. Same part, different numbers for different applications. Someone else would have to explain the "why" behind that.

240z Inspection Light Source?
EuroDat - Did yours come in? Just got back from Nissan, the dealership they ordered from cancelled the order. They're checking the supply system again today to see if there are others out there.

My Engine Build
You need to find yourself a friend Stateside and work some voodoo to skirt Johnny Law. Ben - Realize you're having a rough go, but wanted to chime in and thank you for the tip on Automotive Touchup.com. Saw this yesterday, and ordered a couple cans of paint to finish the exact same project you posted about. Thanks, and I hope things start looking up.

1975 Datsun 280z Tumblr Blog
A friend of mine has begun outlining his work on his '75 280z through a Tumblr blog. He asked that I share the link, as he's not too computer savvy. Great mechanic, and more than willing to share all the gritty details of the project. Z Goldschläger
