  1. hey guys, thanks for the input. Its a SBC 350 going into a 71 240z. It bolts up 100% factory. I only modified the nose so it will slip into the bellhousing. I bit the bullet and fired it up, works perfect! We'll see how long she lasts.
  2. Hey guys, Long story short i couldnt get the starter (right amount of teeth and all) to fit into the nub in the bell housing. So i trimmed a fair amount of the nose cone and now it fits, but im afraid it may snap. What do you think? Pics: Yes? No? Very good? Thanks so much! Abe
  3. right now when i try to fill up it stops every gallon or so. Is it because the vent lines are tapped off? If so, will routing the lines this way allow me to fill up properly?: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9504&d=1128801645
  4. Why do we HAVE to cut the floor to mount the fuel cell? Can it just sit inside the trunk with mounting straps? I never plan to take my car to the track, just weekend street driving. someone took all the vent lines and such off my my stock gas tank and I just have this (perhaps wrong) thought that it would be cleaner/better to get one of the summit racing fuel cells and mount it inside the trunk. is there some general knowledge i dont have? or did I miss a memo on why everyone cuts their floor? I searched google and the Grand National guys just mount the fuel cell in their trunk, no cutting. Looks like this:
  5. much work is to be done inside the car, and something landed on the hood so the car looks good but is still a project. Im happy with the motor so far, but its an automatic and thats gotta go!
  6. this may seem a little crazy, but i bought this fully restored "rust free" z today, 1971 with a crate chevy 350 in it. I stumbled upon a deal i absolutely couldnt pass up! Bought the car for the price of the motor more pics soon. Ignore the color, i dont like it either
  7. Im watching like a hawk on craigslist. That one is salvage titled with unibody damage...you think its good?! I found some guy in fresno that has one, but man I tell you its tough to guage..because the car has been atleast 2 colors that I can tell from the pics and who knows what rust they just painted over!
  8. perhaps I better explain my motives... im not trying to build a show car. I read a thread the other day about some guy who spent $100k+ on restoring his Z!!!! good lord! I want a good looking, beastly powered, "nicely done" Z that i maybe spent $10k on. bear in mind I will do 100% of the work myself. I already have 70% of the tools to work on cars, but no metal fab equipment yet. I will look for another candidate, but it appears that EVERY car around $1500 has rust on it. I will not start with a $5k car, because thats not the point of what i wanted to do. Which is build a car from the ground up, learn how to weld on it, learn how to do body work on it, learn how to metal fab on it, etc. Ill take some time and strip this of all its crap and get a real good look of how it looks underneath all the paint and sound deadening, and in the mean time Ill try and find a better shell, but i have my doubts ill find one. There are absolutely ZERO Z's within 200 miles from me that are in good condition below $5000. There are a few backyard rotting shells, but i doubt theyre in better condition than this thing...
  9. Hey guys, Here are the pics of the underside. Does this change things for the better, or does it still lend itself towards scrapping this car for a better chassis? Thanks Thanks!!!
  10. No, dont think that i dont appreciate your input! I really do!!!!! I am on the hunt for a better chassis, in the mean time I will try to clean this one up and take better pics so we can definitively assess its doom
  11. Arne, you of all people should be able to tell me if you think the roof rust is worth dooming this chassis for or not! what do u think
  12. Thanks Ill get it on my rack and take pics of those parts and post them up here for you all to decide. I did find another Z about 250 miles away for cheap, he claims its rust free except the battery tray. I think you guys are a little misled that cali has dozens of these lying around, rust free and cheap
  13. smooth, I just picked up a Z as well, here in socal. I am going to be gutting the interior soon to find out just how bad the rust is. I dont think its quite as bad as yours, yet im being told to find a better candidate already by other board members. What are your intentions with yours? How is your rear hatch and quarters? How is your roof? Im just trying to guage what others are undertaking, and what they are letting go to scrap to find out how bad my damage really is.
  14. Thanks E, My budget is not in the 5 figures. Its in the 4's, where ever that may be ultimately I dont know. I bought it to be a project. I want to learn how to weld, that is my main inspiration. I dont think there is a WHOLE lot of more underlaying damage, but the only way to find out is to strip and assess. If indeed this is the extent of it, am I wrong to assume that its on the level that many have undertaken? I see lots of posts about redoing floor panels, roof skin grafts, and cutting out the quarter panels. Im not trying to make a quick and easy solution. If the car takes me 3 years to finish, so be it. Also, based on what Ive been looking at, it would appear that finding a rust FREE Z is almost impossible. They all have SOME rust. So thats the point im at, I think its best to strip completely and see how bad it really is. Right?
