  1. UPDATE: Ok, you CAN make a 280zx pedal work in the 260z, which is what I am doing. You need to bend down the metal on the pedal box to keep the clutch position sensor plate (on the pedal) from hitting the box. Then you can squeeze the pedal in. The pedal hits the brake pedal, but I was able to put it in vices and rebend the pedal to give it some clearance away from the brake pedal. Now it's a bit too long, but I weld, so I'll be cutting it with a torch, shortening it, and rewelding it shorter. That's that. Then, a bracket for the spring needs to be welded on directly in back of the location where the clutch cylinder meets the pedal. Total time to do all this? 1.5 hours if you are moving fast. PITA? Yeah....but worth it to save money and have the car running sooner.
  2. , it's an auto, yes. I have a donor car. 280zx 2+2. What other parts will I need? I assumed that swapping flywheels and getting new hard lines for the cylinder would pretty much do it?? The only problem I am having is that darned clutch pedal (which of course I don't have a 260z clutch because I have an AUTOMATIC). :'(
  3. Trying to swap clutch pedals from the 1981 280zx and noticing that they're completely different trying to swap it into the 260z. What's the best route? Buy a clutch pedal assembly for the 260z from a parts store? Can I do some cutting so the spring mechanism will work? Ugg... Whole assembly swap?
  4. Haha, nice! Yeah, just ordered it and have it coming in tomorrow.
  5. Yes, I had 9 and a half in my mind when I typed the 8 inch in. ! Yeah, I will be getting the 9 1/2. Good call!
  6. Yup, it is. And will do. That's funny, because I think the 260z that I'm swapping into also has the 240mm flywheel. Darn....oh well. I'll order the 8 and 7/8 inch clutch then. Thanks!
  7. Non turbo. I'm seeing 9 1/2 and 8 7/8. Which one is the right one? 1981 280zx. 5 speed.
  8. Idk yet. Part it out and scrap it I guess. It's in pretty rough shape.
  9. Picked up a 5 speed NA 280zx 2+2 to put the running gear in the 260z. Price for the car and its WORKING engine? $140. Cha-ching!!!
  10. Hey guys, just found an 1981 280zx non turbo FI with a five speed. Is that still compatible with the 260z?
  11. Ok, cool. I'll need a breaker bar and some patience for that one. I'm really only concerned about compatibility with the shifting lever, boot and driveshaft (I would prefer to avoid cutting).
  12. Here's what I'm looking at getting: 1979 280-zx 2+2 with five speed. 140xxx miles on it. I want the five speed in the 260z. Besides getting a new clutch kit, will those parts swap over exactly into the 260z? Will I need to do some adjustments or anything? Any additional parts need to be ordered?
  13. Huh....can't seem to find one anywhere. Does anyone know a place where I can get a gasket and the lower housing online for a 280z?
  14. Oh good. I'll nab a 240Z one, then. Thanks!
  15. Can't find it anywhere. Checked Black Dragon and it says it's only for the 240z. Is this the same housing as the 260z? My bolts are completely stripped out and I $&!#ed up trying to tap new threads. I really just need a new housing. :-/
  16. It was, but yeah, I have no idea as far as quality is concerned.
  17. Agreed, well....I'm putting in the new t-stat today, so we'll see if it works. Had to tap new bolt holes though....The stupid previous owners stripped the threads and glued the bolts for the t-stat upper unit in place. Idiots...
  18. Well, I already had a bottle of the super strength stuff for neglected radiators so I figure it's worth a shot to see how it works. As far as taking it into the shop goes, does anyone know how much that runs? It's $80 for a new one, so.....there's a lot at stake here. I do appreciate all your input though! I did get a 180 t-stat.
  19. It's doesn't look too bad through the top--that's not saying a whole lot though. I'll run some firestone radiator flush through it first.
  20. Great. Thanks!
  21. Oh nice! I'm getting ready to swap a 5sp into my 260z. It'll be a nice change from the auto 3 spd. You should post a video!
  22. Car keeps overheating on warm days (60+ degrees). It has the three speed auto so naturally it runs at 3600rpms going 70mph. It won't heat up if I stay at 55mph, but as soon as I speed up, it will over heat to 240-260 degrees. So: I suspected a stuck t-stat. Checked, t-stat was removed by previous owner. So what now? New water pump? The car has 80k original miles on the engine, so I am guessing it could be getting old and gunked up. Any other ideas? Oh yes, and should I reinstall the new t-stat I got, or leave it deleted?
  23. Awesome! Thanks! Will the flywheel bolt up as well? I'm guessing so...right?
  24. Found a possible donor car. It's a 280zx: 1979. 5 speed. So...the question is I know they have two non-turbo engines in this model and year, the L20 and L28. If the car is indeed non-turbo, will either 5 speed work in my 260z with the L26? The donor car is in great condition, so this would be awesome!
  25. 260z....differential bolt for checking the level is stuck. I've tried everything but that square bolt sucks and, of course, there is that metal bolted to it and the bushings on the frame, so a combo wrench is really the only option. I've tried an air hammer to loosen it, 1/4 can of PB Blast, a hammer and a huge combo wrench. It hasn't stripped out yet, but getting there. Ideas guys? There's no room, and even with leverage it won't budge. Is torching a bad idea on the transfer case?
