73 240z shuts off while driving
i just placed a new filter in, before i drove it, so i don't think it could be clogged, but i'll check, its crazy cause prior to this i had had starting problems, and people where saying to see if the fuel filter was clogged, and after looking and looking for it, i noticed the previous owner took out the fuel filter and ran a hose from the tank straight to the fuel pump...now based on my hanse manual, it looks like im suppose to have the hose that goes from the fuel tank, to the filter, then from the filter to the fuel pump...just wondering does that sound right?

i had completely drained my tank, and removed it from the car, more work than just leaving it in the car, but made it easier to work on,

73 240z shuts off while driving
hello i have the same problem as posted by another member, it sounds exactly the same, but another member told me my solution is probably different because mine is not fuel injected, i drive the car and when i go about 40, the car just shuts off, like someone just turned the key on me, the car will fire right back up when i go to re start it, as if nothing happened, then it will happen again.

just wondering, if the starter was completely shot, would it not start at all after how many tries? cause my car does eventually start, but it does take numerous attempts

ok, sorry guys, i mean to say that when i go to start the car, most of the time i just hear click, and nothing, i do hear the fuel pump going, but nothing else, then i try over and over again, and then the car sounds like its about to start and then nothing. then i try again, and it does start, its a very rough idle, then dies, when i finally do get it running, i step on the gas it dies, thanks again everyone

so are you recommending replacing the solenoid on the starter? should i just replace the whole starter altogether? i tried that screw driver test to the solenoid, and it didn't start cranking, just a big spark, would replacing my ignition coil help? it is still the stock ignition coil

hello i know that there are so many "rough starts" or "doesn't start" posts here, i read most but there are so many suggestions that i don't know where to start here's what happens: (1973 datsun 240z, manual transmission, bone stock) i try to start the car, and i hear click, i can hear the fuel pump going, but when i go to crank it, it just clicks, so i try again and now i'll hear it cranking but not turning over, i try it again with the choke open and still nothing, i try over and over, sometimes i just get a click, other times it sounds like its so close to starting, i try different ways in starting it, in neutral, in gear, holding on the clutch, no clutch and just turning it, and same result, after about 20 tries, it finally catches and starts, the idle is low (choke is closed) and runs for a bit, then dies, i try it again with the choke open it starts up (maybe after 10 more clicks, and the almost turning over sound) then it starts, revs go up cause the choke is open then it dies, so i start it again, and finally i get it running, but after its been running for a bit i push on the gas and it dies, and then do it all over again, its a hit or miss sometimes it runs and runs fine, i even managed to get it to start and drive it around the block, but i noticed that even while driving, when i came to a stop it sounds like its about to die, so i have to push on the gas and just go (lucky i was just going around the block, i wouldn't trust it to go far) when i push on the gas it takes a while till you can feel it speed up, here's what i have done to my car so far: from my previous posts, i had another problem where my fuel gauge wasn't working (still isn't but thats another problem) so i removed my tank to check everything, and put it back in place, could i have done something when putting my tank back that could have caused this? could one of the hose be connected incorrectly? as for the wiring, its all back to normal, well this problem was happening before i removed the tank. i do have a fully charged battery in, i tried the technique that a member posted on another post, saying to touch the 2 ends on the solenoid with a screw driver, i did that and the starter didn't crank over, i just got a big spark, previous owner told me he just replaced the spark plugs and wires before i bought it, im stuck, i don't know what else to check, there is gas in the car, sorry for lengthy post, i just find the more descriptive i am to begin with the easier it might be for someone to help diagnose my problem i just want my z to start as if it were a brand new car, and start all the time.. thank you guys

hello everyone, i have a 1972 datsun 240z, im new to the whole "Z" world... can anyone suggest any performance upgrades, that would be my best bang for my buck... everything i have right now is bone stock, just wondering what you guys recommend, as well as the websites i could purchase them from, i have been at zstore.com, are there others? i've been searching and it seems like they have the best selection thank you

hello, i have a 1972 datsun 240z, and i noticed on the on position i hear the fuel pump engage and run, but it constantly runs, i was wondering is this normal? shouldn't it shut off, i left it on the on position for a long time without starting it, just to see if it eventually shuts off, but after about 20 minutes i still hear it running

thank you everyone, i did attach the red cables to the switch and the reverse lights work...THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! but as for the neutral switch i don't see anything else on the transmission that looks like the reverse switch by the shifter...so i still don't know where the mystery green wires go, but thank you guys for your help

trust me this isn't a "troll prank" (whatever that is) i do know somewhat some stuff about cars, sorry im no pro, this is why i coming to you guys for help, as i stated in some of my previous post (sorry i didn't mention that here) but when i bought my 73 240z, it looked like the previous owner did a hack job on the electrical, before i bought it ran perfect, he started it quickly, and never got a chance to see that the gauge wasn't working, he told me before he handed it over to me he had to remove the fuel tank to make a weld on the diff mount. then he remounted the tank and when i got the car back no wires were connected, so not sure what connects to what, i have see 2 wires coming from the tank, 2 wires coming from the fuel pump, a blue wire looking like it comes somewhere close to where the filler part of the tank is, and black, green and yellow wire coming from the top next to the chasis, so im not sure what connects to what, i looked at the wires coming from the sending unit and cleaned and theres no corriosion. as well when i connect the black wire from the fuel pump to the black wire that comes from top close to the chasis i hear the fuel pump run and constantly run (not sure if this should be another post, asking for help, as to why my fuel pump sounds like it constantly runs) \ so Escanlon, this is not a prank, really i am lost, if anyone can help, thanks

this is a huge favor, or maybe unless someone can tell me off the top of their head if they know, but when i purchased my car i could already see the previous owner hacked and sliced some wires and i think did a quick re-attachment of everything... i did locate the switch, and there are 2 wires attached, i was wondering what colors should be attached to the switch? i have 2 green wires attached to it right now, but i noticed that there are two other wires that are bundled together with those green wires that are red with black stripe, connected to nothing i noticed that none of the green wires connected to the switch had power going to them, but one of the red with black wires did have power going to them, just wondering did the previous owner connect the right wires back? and if the red/black wires are to connect to the switch, does anyone know where the 2 green wires are to go? or the other way around, if the green ones are the ones meant to be attached, then where do the red/black go? Thank you

just wondering... if i can get some of your guys' opinion... theres a guy selling me a 1984 nissan 300zx, body is in rough shape but everything else seems fine, the engine is a RB30ET and it has 138000 kms on it... just wondering is it easy and worth it to swap everything out of that 300zx and put into my 73 240z... has anyone ever done this engine swap? is it more difficult than it sounds? as well how hard would it be to take the hubs off this car, which is 5 bolt and swap it for my 4 bolt? this is the ad: http://winnipeg.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-classic-cars-1984-Nissan-300ZX-Coupe-W0QQAdIdZ224904127#
