thanks steve. this is a stock ac system but the original relay is long gone. according to Courtesy Nissan the original part number is 25230-89954. page AC-36 of the fsm indicates that i need a three pin relay, but it doesnt tell me much more than that. the harness connector is a round rubber plug with three bullet style connectors embedded in it.

the a/c compressor relay for a 260z is no longer available from anyone. anywhere. it was suggested by a mechanic that i could substitute in any 3-blade relay provided it was rated for the correct amperage. he added that most old horn relays would probably work. anyone have any experience or thoughts on this? thanks, tony, richmond, va

following up to this thread... after chasing false leads and cleaning connectors for a week, i've found that my missing volt returns if i disconnect the voltage regulator. is the solution as obvious as replacing the vr, or is there likely something else in play? i would keep chasing this to see where it leads, but i've not found a wiring diagram specifically for the 74 regulator. on another note, any idea why the tach needle gives one huge bounce after turning the ign switch to "on"?

that raises more interesting thoughts. the contacts in the back of the fuse box were shiny and showed no obvious signs of oxidation, but i'll dig into that one deeper.

positive lead on inbound side of the fuse socket, negative lead to ground. - i checked several different grounding points within reach, all with the same result. - in an effort to isolate the problem i pulled the fuse out of the socket and re-tested, no change. - fuse 3 and fuse 4 share the same supply wire (b/w), so i pulled fuse 4 as well, still no change. i believe the loss is coming somewhere upstream of the fuse panel, but only on this circuit. other fuses are showing 12.3v, same as the battery.

according to the fsm the running lights should be on a different fuse, but i will check that box you mentioned.

I just finished resolving a short on fuse #3 (turn signals and gauges), but i am still showing a constant 1 volt drop on that circuit. I've done continuity tests and checked resistance on every segment that I can identify, and the problem appears to lie somewhere between Connector 3 and Fuse 3. Otherwise, everything appears to be functioning normally. Can I safely ignore the voltage drop, or do I need to keep digging? thanks, tony
  8. Inf, i had previously replaced all the front bushings but everything still felt very loose and klunky. the new rack made a noticeable improvement, and now the steering is smooth and tight. not the cheapest repair you can make, but i would make it part of any front end rebuild.
  9. PO installed an oversized sway bar, but the center section of the bar is about an inch or two too narrow. As a result, the area where the sb bends backwards towards the links is directly under the frame, and the bar is smacking the bottom of the frame. Mechanic has suggested a 3/8 - 1/2 inch spacer to pull the sway bar down and away from the frame, and offered to machine a pair for $100. Seemed a bit much for two aluminum blocks with holes drilled in them, so I poked around the typical vendor websites but could not find anything. Has anyone come across something similar? Thanks, Tony
  10. agreed ta, cheap parts+good warranty just amounts to a perpetual PITA. thanks for everyone's suggestions. since there's been no negative feedback and they have the best price i guess i'm going with the carsteering.com option.
  11. ok, in the spirit of giving back, here's what i've found so far. perhaps it will save someone else some leg work. <table border=1> <tr align="right"><td></td> <td>price</td> <td>core charge</td> <td>shipping</td> <td>availability</td> <td>p/n</td> <td>brand</td></tr> <tr align="right"><td>carsteering.com</td> <td>215</td> <td>100</td> <td>free</td> <td>24 hrs</td> <td>80-70087</td> <td></td></tr> <tr align="right"><td>advanceautoparts.com</td><td>258</td> <td>29</td> <td>free</td> <td>24 hrs</td> <td>RP2101</td> <td>Fenco</td></tr> <tr align="right"><td>autozone.com</td> <td>285</td> <td>36</td> <td>free</td> <td>3-5 days</td> <td>6823</td> <td>ATSCO</td></tr> <tr align="right"><td>sfxperformance.com</td> <td>252</td> <td>0</td> <td>13.00</td> <td>14 days</td> <td>MOOES2109R</td> <td>Moog</td></tr> <tr align="right"><td>black dragon</td> <td>399</td> <td>25</td> <td></td> <td></td> <td>62-479-Z</td> <td></td></tr> <tr align="right"><td>thezstore.com</td> <td>N/A</td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td></tr> <tr align="right"><td>zcarsource.com</td> <td>302.52</td> <td>150</td> <td>36.97</td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td></tr> <tr align="right"><td>zparts.com</td> <td>?</td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td></tr> <tr align="right"><td>oreilly</td> <td>$347</td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td> <td></td></tr> </table>
  12. sblake, i could not find that item on their website. can you post a link to the page? thanks, tony
  13. rock auto didn't show any, but zbarn did and they're awfully proud of them: ST1025 Rack and pinion assembly 260-280Z 8/73-78 OEM $915.00 ST1125 Rack and pinion assembly 260-280Z 8/73-78 RMF $495.00 ZOINKS!
  14. has anyone dealt with http://www.carsteering.com? they advertise reman'd steering racks for 215 +core. i asked who the remanufacturer was and indicated that it was done in-house.
