1973 240z build, need help
Yeah baby, that's a Datsun alright! Now what about the rust? That is the main question. Check battery tray, frame rails, floor boards, quarter panels, rear hatch, etc.....How is the rust? You really have to be honest with yourself here. How much is to much or how much time and money will it take to fix it? Can I do it or is it a basket case? If you do have some rust post some pics to be advised.

A lot of people use Black Dragon or Motorsport Auto for parts. Also try, I believe it's called All Z's in Burleson. What parts are you thinking about adding?

1973 240z build, need help
Hey Alex, welcome to the club. First of all I would say come up with a plan to get your car running and stick to it. Take a lot of pictures and take inventory of what you have and what you need. Your "wish list" add on stuff should come later after you have an established foundation. Just go slow, research, research, research and have fun. I say research because you can make costly mistakes if you are new to the Z game. I would stick to the stock 6 motor. The more you research the more you find that Nissan really got the motor right the first time, but hey, It's your choice. There are a lot of Z members here in the metroplex and many hidden parts still around. I know the local Craigslist always has some goodies so always be on the lookout. Courtesy Nissan in Richardson is also a very usefull tool. Ask for David House, he knows a lot about early Z cars. As far as the gas tank, take it to a radiator shop and see if they can boil it out for you. Learn how to research things on this website. Chances are if you have any type of question about your Z, it has already been asked before and the members who use this website are very knowledgable and helpful. Have fun and enjoy the ride.

Exterior Paint Color
You can check ebay for different sizes of 3m vinyl tape. My brother in law was sent to Michigan by his company to do some training at 3m and got certified by 3m to do some wraps, so he and I will get after it when its time. But by what he says, its not really that hard to do. You have the film/tape/wrap section to fit the say door for example, heat it up with a heat gun, stretch it over the body part, fold the excess underneath and thats it. Check out some youtube videos and ebay for prices on 3m vinyl tape. $4000, I don't think so. I checked at my local English Auto Paint store the cost of paint and supplies to paint my car. I was going originally to paint it the lime green color from a new dodge charger, like Big Phil of youtube fame, and the supplies were aroung $1500 just by themselves. Way to much for me.

Exterior Paint Color
Your gonna get blasted.....no......I'm gonna get blasted. I'm working on a 10/70 z with a super straight body that anyone would kill for, but I am doing a budget rebuild because I am a cheapskate, I'm not the richest man in the world and mainly because even if I put a bad arse paint job on it and spend a lot of money doing it, I will find the smallest inperfections in the paint and it will drive me crazy. I know I'm just sick like that, so here's my solution. I'm gonna follow the latest car craze and wrap it! 3m vinyl wrap and I tell you why. It's different, it's cheap, it has consistant color with no flaws, there are tons of different colors available and most of all, it's removeable. I know it's blasphamy to some hardcore Z guys but hey, save your money for your motor and suspension and think about the wrap. Check out some Youtube videos on 3m vinyl wrap. I'm going with the army green with Rota RB's, should be pretty cool.

Removing Air Tubes From Manifold ?
My brother-in-law (84 Corvette, 56 Ford Pickup) works for Zep, and he gave me this product called Groovy and it works great. I took my 10/70's brake lines apart with it with no kinking! Just sprayed a little on it the night before, went back the next day shot a little more and whola, like a hot knife through butter.

Going to USGP!
Yes Yes Yes, I can't wait! We should have good weather in November, could be a little windy but nothing major. Before you go, do some research about Austin. It's a great city to party, but if your not careful you could miss the race due to traffic or a major hangover. What part of the track are your seats? Maybe a bunch of Classic Z clubbers will get together and hangout before or after the race??

Mallory Unilite, Ignition Boxes, Rebello 2.7L, Triples
I've had in the past and will go with again, a Mallory unilite mechanical advance dizzy with a Mallory Promaster coil and it worked great. No problems with the tach and was made to work with the factory z dizzy mount. I would recommend this setup to anyone.

Oh boy, what did I do now......?
- Oh boy, what did I do now......?
Stock I believe is black. The yellow springs are Turn Six springs and are aftermarket. I can remember Turn Six from the 80s and I think they were associated with Monza somehow, all their products were black and yellow, and pretty popular. So Jon, your 70, is it 1 inch lower than stock? Are there any bump steer spacers? I read one of your other posts and I to am in the same boat. I want to do a budget rebuild starting with the front end and use all rubber bushings, but mate them with the tokico illumimas. I would like to use the Turn Six springs but I really don't know any characteristics/spring rates of the springs. Are they overly stiff, stiff or stock like? Otherwise I could just use my stock springs, but I would like to give the Turn Sixes a chance but I don't know much about them.- Oh boy, what did I do now......?
First let me thank everyone for the responces. Hardway your Z looks like fun. It looks like it drops the car an inch, or is it more? Does the car have bump steer spacers? What kind of struts do you have? I plan on using some tokicos illuminas with either 15x6 ZX snowflakes or 16x7 rota rbs.- Oh boy, what did I do now......?
Yeah I kinda thought the same thing, but what about the brand? Do you remember any company that sold bright yellow springs?- Oh boy, what did I do now......?
I had bought these spings on ebay as an impulse buy for $52. bucks thinking what the heck. The seller said they were bought by a friend of his in the mid 80s for a 71z, (mine is a 10/70 build) from Impact Auto in NY. They have markings on the boxes that have an "F" with a 12 and what looks to be a part number and the other has a "R" with 12.5 with what looks to be a part number. I called Impact and they have no way of cross referencing the numbers since there so old. So I guess my next step would be take them to a muffler/shocks/brake shop and see if they can test for the spring rate and size. So I guess my questions were, do these yellow springs look familiar to anyone? Wasn't there a company called Quick Turn maybe that sold yellow springs? I don't know and if anyone has any information or a good guess, I'm all ears. If they're an upgrade from stock I could use them but I would need to get the information first. Thank you.- Melted Fusebox
bad contacts in the turn signal lights listed under the common z car problems. Maybe take a look at all your parking lights and see if you have some of the same problems.- How Many Z Drivers Also Own BMWs?
My wife drives a 2006 Z4 that I bought her. She says people honk at her all the time and the only thing she doesn't like is that people want to race her all the time.- Angularity of the driveshaft, differential and u-joints on an early Z vs later models
First, thank you fellow Z clubbers for all the responces for my electrical question. Now for one more. My Z I am getting ready to start on has a production date of 10/70 and I'm slowly learning all the little differences between this early Z and all the other Z's I've had in the past, 72 and 73's. I've read a couple of different posts about how the early Z's diff was a little more forward, resulting in more rear end clunk, and quickly worn out u-joints, so they fixed it by moving the diff back a little. Is that correct? Does anyone know when they moved the differential back to fix this problem? I would like to put a 5-speed in mine and keep the original R-180, but before I start, I would like to know what are my best options so I can avoid these problems, or do I have to live with it? Thank you for your time.- I'm sorry for beating a dead horse, but......Does anyone make a NEW datsun wiring ha
I'm sorry for beating a dead horse, but does anyone know of any company that sells a NEW wiring harness for my 10/70 z? I have been out of the Z game for over 15 years, although I have had a rust free super straight series one in my garage for about 20 years, it's finally time to get started. But what I can remember, the wiring was always a problem. Burned out fuses and fuse boxes and non-working tail lights, blah, blah, blah....so I've been looking around but can not find anyone so far that sells such, but can anyone here direct me in the right direction. Thank you for your time.- UK, NZ, AUS, Other "DATSUN" or "DOTSUN"
I remember reading somewhere that Nissan wanted it to be pronounced "Dot-sun" like the Japanese flag, the red dot with the sun rays was easier to associate with for it's American audience. But they were always worried about the name and the flag going together because of the war, but after the car came over and was succesful, that's when they changed the name is Nissan, which they thought would be to difficult to pronounce for the American public in the beginning and wasn't very "catchy"- Buying first Z! NEED HELP
I know you must be really jacked to buy this car but sit back and read this first. I like all the early z's but the only thing wrong with buying a 260 is they only made this car a couple of years before they moved on to the 280 and they made a ton of those, so if you buy the 260 a lot of the parts won't interchange with the 240s and maybe not even the 280s. Parts are becoming more and more scarce, then add the fact that your car is more rare than the 240s or 280s and you could be in trouble when trying to find parts. I have had a lot of early 240s and if it was up to me now, I would buy a 280 and make it look like a 240 (skinny bumpers) 280s had a much better ride- Winter's Projects
I know here in the states the rechomeing process has become very expensive, is it the same in Canada? I live in Texas and I have been quoted prices like 6 to 8 hundred dollars to do a bumper! I would like to get it done but not at that cost.- The ultimate fixer upper
This is my 10/70 #11917 super straight, no rust anywhere z. I bought this for $400 bucks about 20 years ago and its been sitting in my garage since. It's time to get started- The ultimate fixer upper
