Stuck as hell: tales of a transmission drain plug
Thanks guys. Yes i got the filler plug out ( was also very tough to move). I am going to see what i can do, but i am leaning toward taking it to the pros. i don't get a lot of time to work on her and would rather spend it doing other stuff. Thanks for the tip about the fluid. I never would have known. I will check the fluid I bought. Quite poss that its a good thing that plug is stuck. it might have stopped so that i didn't put the wrong stuff in.

Stuck as hell: tales of a transmission drain plug
I bought a 1971 240z back in January. I got it running, replaced most of the braking system, fixed both side windows so that they both go up and down and tended to a few minor details. Long story short, I am ready to test drive it now but thought it would be good to change the trans fluid before doing so. The tranny is a 5 speed from a 280z and seems to be sound but the drain plug is not coming out and to make it worse, someone before me did a good job of messing it up. Can anyone give me any tips? I am not as experienced as many of so I am sure somebody should be able to help. The car is drivable so should I just take it to a shop and let them deal with it?

Yup. Thanks. The seller and I both work a lot this time of year so we are going to try and make it final this week. I called a towing company and they said a flatbed can be there within 2 hours of my call anytime.

Ok. So today, I went back to take a second look at the car. I jacked the thing up and got a good look at the under side of the car. I have to say now that I have officially decided that I want to buy it. I don't think I will find one in this condition so close to home any time soon. Yeah, it has an oil leak and a few issues but nothing out of the ordinary for a 39 year old car. It really has aged well and has very little rust. Just surface stuff. Just need to transfer the title and get it to my house. I can't wait.

Thanks for all of the input and advice. I have decided that the best thing to do is take a second look. I really want the car and negotiated the price I wanted so now I want to make sure I am not making a mistake. If I get it, pics will follow.

I must say that I was feeling pretty good about this. You guys have me second guessing myself. I have looked at several Z's and this is the nicest that I have seen. The floorboards look really good, the frame appears to be solid and the interior is really good for a 40 yr old car. No crack in the dash either. What do I do? Keep looking?

Thanks. I don't own it yet. If I do in fact buy it, I will start snapping pics the day I get it home.

Sorry for the confusion. I found one with no rust. It seems too good to be true but I really am amazed at how good the thing looks. It was originally a San Diego car and was always kept in a garage. Any tips on researching the vin before I commit to buying?

I have been in love with the Z car ever since i first laid eyes upon one. The closest i came to owning one was a 300zx. I am about to buy my first 240z. It is a 1971 that has been repainted and the transmission replaced with a 280 trans. Rust is not an issue. I am not looking for a show car, just a driver that i can work on. Anybody have any tips or sources? I will use any help i can get.
