She starts to sputter and then dies. And that's when the smoke came out of the engine. Didn't know if that was bad. What I'll do tomorrow is empty the float bowls in case I flooded it? And then try again. I'm not sure what to do with the choke and throttle control lever. How far should I pull them up too? All the way till the engine starts? I'm also wondering if someone messed up the spark plug wires goig to the dist. I followed and plugged them in one at a time when switching them today. Could you send me a pic or tell me if I can look at the photo in the fsm and switch it to that if it's wrong?

She's almost their!! Have spark again! She cranks and starts to turn over but doesn't fully starts. Some smoke spit out of the engine though. I have the air box off right now to change the filter and that's when I tried to start her. Don't know if that makes a difference?

Yes!! Got my new NGk wires, bought a new ignition coil, my new ballast resistor will be in the mail box at home today, new dist cap new rotor, if It these don't get me spark then I might be out of ideas. All of these will be installed most likely tomorrow. Got a new box of stuff from the last owners finding it in the garage. Box contained a chiltons manual, mechanical fuel pump, a gasket of some kind brand new, records from the last last owner purchasing parts, a nifty book on after market parts and part numbers for all Z's don't remember the name of the book at this very moment, and a brand new in box 240z model kit the shrink rap is still intact.

Had a minor set back today. My freakin reg car is now broken for unknown reasons. Gotta get my sentra working before u continue on the Z. If I get my parts in sooner on the z and that runs it will be my daily driver lame.... Why does life have to be so hard?

Ahhh ok. I just ordered a new OEM Replacement, it was only like 20 bucks. I did find a new coil that was 9 bucks but I could go for the MSD one. doesn't it come with different ohms? like 1.5 or 3.0?

I was going to change that as well, but it says on the msd site said not to use the ballast resistor, and thats what is broken for sure in center of the little coil. did you use ballast or not?

I don't know i this would prevent the car from sparking, but I took off my resistor to clean off the oxidization for better current and the wire wrapped portion is broken so I don't know if that would prevent the car from sparking, I still think it's my coil so I'm just going to order those two parts tonight.

Yeah, I've always tried to do things myself because a part of me doesn't trust mechanics. I like the mechanic I have now because he tells me in full detail of what he does and shows me on my car. But he's not a Z mechanic, I might ask him to take a look at it because he's really good and close to me, the closest Z garage is in San jose and I have a feeling they will charge me up the arse to do a tune up. Now Carbs on the other hand I'll get that done for sure because I don't trust myself measuring the fuel in the bowls .

I know I can re oil the k&n filters and wash them, but the filter is damaged in some parts. Its bent and smashed in some spots so I feel it better to just buy my own and start from when I put it in so I know what work I do. When I get the car running(and move into the house my wife and I are looking for ) I'll get the car home and start getting into my little projects. Just gotta get her going so I can get her verified by the chp to get her registered.

I'll Def take to a datsun mechanic, the Z garage is near my work. Im following the haynes and I just got the factory service manual in the mail. On order-New NGK plugs and wires, air filter(I know that doesn't help with the no spark issue, she still needs a new one) And today I will be buying a new coil during lunch to put in when all my plugs and wires come through. If she still doesn't spark, then im down to the ignition system. Last owner upgraded it so it doesn't have I think its a relay? Anyways hopefully that will do it.

Worked on the car today during lunch and after work. Got the older distributor back together and the condenser fixed and installed with some good sanding done to the oxidized areas till i get my dremel over there. I have the air box off and the filter is so black that im just going to pick up a new one maybe tomorrow. I am going to ee if I can p/u some ngk plugs with wires, new dist. cap and rotor. All this to be done before i pick the wife up for lunch

Will check today. Chance of heavy rain, if it's clear firmly lunch I'll be converting the pertronix back the already converted distributor and then try her again. At the same time I'm going to see what other connections are oxidized and try to clean it up a bit. I have a dremal and I'm going to buy a wire brush at some point on my day off. Here's hopin there's no rain or my lunch!

Condenser is now fixed. Was taught how to do soldering tonight and i sanded the connections because there was no connection because of so much oxidization.

is it supposed to be 12v when I test it? Thats what it says in the book, I have my factory manual showing up any day now(On disc). Well see what happens, rain has started again today but it looks like it'll be stopped by thursday when Im off, so i'll probably make a full day of trying to get her going.

That red wire is from the pertronix I just put in. Damn I didn't know it was already converted.....I'll have to find that black piece now and change it back. I'll clean those up, I'm going to do some sawdering(if that's how you spell that). Tonight when my friend teaches me so that will fix the broken condenser wire. I used a voltage meter to test the coil I tested while cranking to the two little screws on the right and left of the large rubber plug going to the coil and it said it was 5.6 but I was told that I'm not supposed to test it on those screws and it's supposed to be tested at another spot for the coil?

Ya! I think its from me installing the Pertronix that it doesn't even spark now. I don't know if it was a weak spark before I changed it over and now im freaking missing a piece. But thats not what is weird to me, I looked at everyones breaker style distributor and the one in the haynes manual and they don't match up, these are the pics that I wanted to upload The one with that weird plastic flower looking on is mine and looks nothing like the book version, I stole this pic from another thread and its a stock distributor. the other pic I wanted to show was the pic of the coil. The little condenser's wire is busted and Im wondering if this will affect the spark at all. Im fixing it now.
