thats a perfect pic. do you know if it is legible without pulling the cam? Ive already replaced the valve cover, so kinda want to know how long to book for surgery. also, thanks for including that chart. that's a bonus.

THAT would make total sense. thanks for the info, exactly what i was looking for. I actually set the timing to 240 spec, but before i did, i noticed that that the timing was already advanced a bit more than i thought it should be. since setting it to spec it runs great, but was thinking it could use a bit more advance since it would stumble just a little bit. tomorrow, I'll look for that cam letter and see if it is indeed there. i suspect i will find it. if so, i'll give er a little more advance and see if its any better. I did notice that the cam is embossed 'japan' so im confident it is original datsun when you say the back of the cam, what place should i be looking for? do you mean on the end near timing chain?

ok, probably a few silly questions but not getting too much help with info, so I'll try again here. I have 72 240. 1) motor block is stamped 'L26' not 'L24" so im thinking its 2.6litre block right? yes?no? found a ATK ENGINES tag on the block, so im pretty sure i have a rebuilt crate motor here. 2) head is e88, i've been schooled with the differences in various e88 heads, so i think i have that straight. 3) su carbs, three bolt round tops. so what im thinking is someone has replaced the motor, and probably kept the original intake set-up. I just finished a major tune-up. everything from points, condens. to dwell timing, ignit timing, valve gap adjustment. seems to be running WAY better now. no real issues exept for carbs need some tlc, gonna do that tomorrow. what i'm worried about is, I've set everything to my manual specs for a 72' 240. because of the different block stamping, should i use 260 tune specs, are they any different??ie: valve gaps, timing, etc.? also, does this l26 with e88 head and old su's differ in power from the l24? if so, good? bad? need someone to give me a bunch of info here, soory to be a pest.

do me a favor. i've asked this question already but still have my doubts,, My engine block is stamped on passenger side with 'L26'. what the heck? is this a motor previosly in a 260? it does have e88 heads, and round top su's as youve seen in the picks. and yes, body is in great shape, an absolute blessing to find like that. paint job is shiny and pretty, but not the best quality tape job, rubber trim and such has a little overspray. but, it has no rust on rails, floors, other prob spot so im happy. just would really like to figure this block stamp issue out.

. YEAH. . 73 had allot of 'work' but i aint gonna tell ya it was professional thanks for the time spent with that reply here's what my ugly 73 looked like. and heres what my 71 motor that i never got to use looked like.

sorry for confusion folks,\ this car is a 72. looks like pretty original. was just saying i wanted to simplify the intake side a bit and was comparing to my 73 that i previously had owned. my previous 73 had been stripped down quite a bit from the stock config. captain obvious. , i like that handle.

actually, just recieved the major tune kit from motorsport auto yesterday in the mail along with new orange wires. you yanks get stuff so much cheaper than we do, that kit would cost 100$ easy here in canada. anyways, yeah, it still has point/condens ignition. so im loooking forward to installing that stuff. thanks for the input on the water sys on the manifold. that was a concern of mine. would like to go with the header, but was weary about getting rid of those water pipes. I'll do a search, im sure i can find a 'how to' on that. anyways, thanks so much for the input.

im not sure but i still think this thing looks alot more cluttered. my 73 was owned by my brother since almost new, and i think he had removed alot of the hardware over time. i also had a 71 motor on a stand for a while, it looked alot cleaner too without the water sys, and anti backfire. since this was a california car, did it recieve more attention for pollution than the other states' cars. in particular, did the other state cars have anti backfire and pump? thanks guys for all the input.

Thanks for your input. I actually will probably never use the ac, so in time will probably clean up engine bay by removing and promptly shipping south to interested heat scorched buyer. what do you think the ac components are worth? anyways, i paid 5900$ for the car so i feel better you guys like what you see. does anyone have any more input on anything they see? i do find the intake side has alot of extra stuff on it compared to my previous 73. stuff like backfire sys. vacuum diaphrams, and the water sys for intake temp. i really hope i can clean this up over time. looks a little crowded around carbs in my opinion.

wanted to post a few picks of my latest purchase, would a few of you guys look over the pics and give me your honest input. Like ive said in another post, I wanted a good starting point for a car i could improve and drive at the same time. currently waiting on delivery of new life blood,ie: tune kit, shocks, springs, etc. stuff that is needed to be able to drive safely and reliable one day a week summer only. anyways, if you guys have any input whatsoever, please share. I've been waiting years to have one of these in my garage that i can actually enjoy. information from po was scattered at best, all ive been told is the car lived in cali for it's life, and was brought to tenessee three years ago. i have no other info, so it always makes me wonder. thanks, I would like to share what i bought it for, but kinda wondering what you folks think it might be valued at in this shape.
  13. no replies? yer giving me a complex.
  14. believe me, i live here. i see the salt we pour on the roads. this car is guaranteed to be an absolute pillar of dust, held together by multiple layers of bondo, primer, and paint. too funny.
  15. thanks for the info guys, once i get this thing properly checked out, i'll let ya know if/when i sell um. Arne, how is the porche? i saw your previous 240 for sale, wish it was in my price range at the time.
  16. Hey pantherf9f, yes, after searching for a full year, i finally found something worth the trip down south, that was in my budget. I really wanted to find a car i could afford to improve and repair ay faults, while still being able to drive it. how do you know this car??
  17. thinking of getting rid of these, but would like to know a little more about them before i decide. anyone have any knowledge if these are period correct? garbage?
  18. hey guys, any idea what these are. i was told they are period correct. 1972
  19. getting to know my newest addition to the garage. 24o with the su's and pretty much stock config as far as ive found. just doesnt seem to be making the power it should. first impression is running a little lean, but what are your thoughts? the good starts great, idles great, runs good, no overheating the bad makes really mediocre power. spools up fine to about 3000 but seems to flutter over that. revs will continue to rise, but power is not up to par. blows a haze over 5000 out the pipe. checked, wires, cap, rotor, all the basic stuff seems good. havent gotten too into timing, but engine runs starts so good i doubt its out too far. pulled plugs, a couple had carbon powder, the others were quite clean. give me some insight guys, where would you start? thinking maybe vac advance but revs will climb normal, just no power. ps. i dont know su's yet so talk to me. thanks for any time you can spare.
  20. hi guys, sold my 73 basket case last year, just purchased what i would consider a complete rarity up in my part of the woods. solid early s30 in excellent condition very little rust. anyways, i'm going to post some pics some time soon, but the first thing i noticed on my newly purchased 72, is it has an L26 block with E88 head. took a look at the previous threads, but would anyone be able to shorten my search with info on this config? i would think this basically says my 240, has a 260 block correct? also, what's up with the e88 story. was it offered on the l26? motor has dome top su's and runs not bad, but havent dug too deep yet as ive only owned for couple days. any help or links to prev threads would be great, thanks folks. ok, here's a photo
  21. Thanks so much for replying to my post. Car is located in Irvine, looks like its about 45 miles from you. not sure if that is too far for your taste. actually, just waiting to hear back from seller on some negotiations, so not able to say wether or not there is still a car there to look at. anyways, very nice of you to answer. I will speak again with seller and get back to this post. In the meantime, let me know how i can help pay your expenses and time. car is 74 260, w/l28, triple webers. body has had work done but looks pretty good from pics. looking to purchase for reasonable price that will allow me to finish up the car's requirments without blowing my life savings. any thoughts? Talk soon.
  22. recently sold my 73 and am looking at purchasing a replacement soon. problem is, the car i am currently considering is california, and i'm currently in toronto area. would love to find one or more members who would like a reason to drive over to seller's home and review a few things for me. dont mind paying for time and fuel but would prefer someone with knowledge on s30's. dont need to be a guru, just someone that knows common stuff. currently considering a car between riverside and escondido. feel free to share your thoughts. thanks
  23. Hey folks, some family members will be travelling to florida this winter, and i would love to have them pick up a set of rota rbr's and tires for me while they are there. cocoa beach area, but can travel a short distance without issue. as tires and rims are MUCH cheaper in US than in canada (where im at), i would love a referal to a retailer in the area if possible. thanks for any info. Tom
  24. currently working on rebuild of 73 240. went out to purchase some new bumpers and other various pieces from a fella out of town, and was surprised to see alot of other items for sale in his garage also. long story short, i purchased all he had that was for a 240z, one item of which was this new motor. supposedly pulled from a 71, it looks incredibly clean, but has obviously had some work done to it. here's the scoop. The motor has all that is common to a 71 l24, e88, dome top su's, no smog items, etc. however, the block has been painted( orange), gaskets are obviously new, clutch looks like it has very few kilos on it also. PO, says that that he found it in a 'barn find', car was rotten, but it looks like whoever stored the car had just finished a fresh rebuild shortly before putting it away. PO says that it turned over fine and oil pressure came right up sharp, but that he didnt spend much more time on the engine. decided to sell all datsun parts he had, as he was relocating to west coast. so, to me the engine looks tip-top, ready to go. linkages are beuty, and everything looks great. half of me say'drop it in the car and see what it runs like. the other half says do some minor pulling apart to at least see whats inside? i dream of finding some goodies like head-work or something, but who knows. i dont have endless funds, as rebuild of unibody and various other parts of my car are soaking up vast dollares, so not sure what i should do. what would you people suggest? any ideas? or should i just drop it in and try it out. hope i dont seem like a dummy here asking for opinions.
  25. pulled motor, trans, driveline. got new motor on engine stand, gotta order new floor pans. anyone have input on replacements and sourcing? also, removed sorry looking side pipes via sawsall, with much anticipation and delight. goodbye goodbye.
