  1. I pulled the differential cover. The case has been marked, probably by a junkyard, as a 280zx. I have a 77 280z 5 speed mfg date 7/77. I spun the large ring gear and it is stamped: H37 10 DO(?) 9 3 6. It also has been written with a sharpie 7 0 6 t 8. Can anyone help identify what this came out of? Here are some pictures Thanks.
  2. Took the differential out as part of my overall suspension, brake, etc refresh. The dain plug had metal shavings Does this look normal? Also removed the differential mount and it looks good. The new one is on the left. I was getting a clunk but found the differential mount bolts were loose. The old mount still looks good and was thinking to reuse it. Not only were the differential mount bolts loose but so were the drive line bolts connecting it to the differential. Do these typically loosen up or was the PO/mechanic careless? I do have a question on removing the differential cover. What is the best way? I don't want to injure it and it is stuck on good. I also have a potential problem in I could not get the upper drain plug loose and put on the mustache bar nut to the cover bolt thinking as I tightened that I could loosen the plug. Didn't happen but when I removed the nut it took the bolt out with it. I can deal with that but when I put the bolt back in, what is the best way to reseal it to the cover - threadlocker?
  3. Now I know why you use the name blue - it is not the color of your car but your skin color in the frigid north. That hair dryer has its work cut out for it. Just looked at the 10 day forecast for Halifax, man that is cold. Cheers and stay warm!
  4. If you do a search for taaroa477 you find a few people on this site have bought from him in the past and have nothing but praise. They may have his address.
  5. He has not had anything for sale for at least 30 days. You have got to file a claim with pay pal if you have not done so. If you used a credit card you need to file a dispute with them as well. The guy who bought them is flight2cdg and left positive feedback on the wheels December 8th. You can try to contact him through ebay as suggested but I do not think he would respond. You could send him an email through ebay and simply ask him for the mailing address of taaroa477, the seller of the wheels he bought. Tell him you bought something from him (don't say the wheels) but have not been able to contact him. See if he will give you an address. Good luck.
  6. I am in the process of working on a 77. I put the rubber around the windshield and did not use any sealer. That took several times of pressing around the outside to make sure the window went in the channel. I am planning to now install the ss pieces. I have the plastic install tool to move the rubber lips around the ss. Hopefully this will not be a bear. The ss is very fragile and looks like it wouldn't take much to bend/crease it. Once I have all this in place is the rope around the windshield just to be able to pull the gasket over the inside? So you put the windshield in place and pull on the rope from the inside. I was going to put the whole thing in dry, am I asking for trouble? Thanks.
  7. Your purchase may have been covered by Ebay buyer protection. Check the listing and contact Ebay as well about this. You should also be sure to leave negative feedback so future buyers are warned. But I believe Ebay will suspend him with this size of a transaction. Good luck.

If you have any old records in a box or drawer, maybe you can find the insurance card and it should have the vin# on it.

Your posts reminded me of long ago telegrams: transporter just call - stop/ 72 OJ at border in PA - stop/ be here in a few hours - stop/ cant wait to see and drive my new toy - stop// telegram speak is back.
  10. Given that it is a dealer I think they may just have a ridiculous reserve and are testing the waters to see if they can establish a value for the car. We'll see how high the bidding goes.
  11. This car needs to purchased by someone that can keep it in a climate controlled setting. Driving it would be a crime. Very nice car. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-280ZX-1-229-Original-Miles-Museum-Quality-/270868797454?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3f1109d80e

John married my sister in law. Great guy, heard many stories about the farm and the family.

This is a great time to teach responsibility which also means he has to earn money to pay for the cars repairs. You need to ween him off of your wallet and no time like the present. Heck, he just scored a free car. Even if he puts a couple thousand into it that is still dirt cheap. But as has been said 240Z's and 16 -20 year olds is not a great combination. The Z is not an accident friendly car, something a new driver should not be given.

26th-z I don't know that people would assume not to use a rope when you see the picture. You and I would only do it to pull a car that is stuck in the mud, but not all of the readers of that manual. I've always liked your avitar, is that why the early Z's are so expensive? They tucked away one of these ladies in the back?

I'm shocked to see someone advocating towing with a rope even if it is in the owners manual. You would have to have someone in the towed vehicle to hit the brakes, this may not be legal in many states. I have seen the tow with a rope method and I have seen busted front and rear bumpers and if that car starts wondering for any reason, good luck.

I had a VW and used a tow bar to move it. The bar came with brackets that bolted to the chassis and you connected the tow bar to the brackets. Then I could tow it with any vehicle that had a hitch. I would imagine you could do the same as long as you could bolt it to the chassis. The only other concern would be if you have to disconnect the drive train for all wheels on the ground towing. You also have to get a set of lights or somehow get your z lights to work to indicate stopping and turning. I ended up buying some lights at the local u-haul store that plugged into the tow hitch electrical connection and had a super long cable. They were cheap, around $15. This is what the tow bar and bracket looks like: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Empi-Tow-Bar-/390361409512?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3AVolkswagen&vxp=mtr&hash=item5ae35a67e8

Get that app for your phone that you can point it at something and it will translate, unless you can read Japanese.

Just noticed you're from Richmond, did you know the ****man Rickman family? Change the R to a D as the smut checker won't let me post it with the D it just fills it with ****
  21. I am off to my local grocery store and I am going to pick up some beer and wine. Not a big deal most of you may think, but this is in Georgia which today, is the first time you can buy such wicked and evil products on a Sunday. Since the beginning of time (at least my time) people could not buy alcohol on a Sunday in Georgia. No more dry Sunday football games after running out on Saturday. Thank you Georgia voters.
  22. I would have to side with BobC as to driving a car like this prior to having been tested by the close call. I wanted my kids to have that close call fender bender, where no one gets hurt and they realize how fast an accident can happen. During those initial outings you want a car that is a full metal jacket with lots of protection. A manual shift would be a nice thing as it is a good thing for all kids to learn on and it gives them some bragging rights with their peers. I think the father and son restoration bonding would be great and it will equip your son with some life long skills. He won't have to pay exorbitant prices for repair work as he will have a better understanding of how things work and hopefully not be afraid to try to fix things himself. Confidence with car repairs will lead to confidence in other areas. It probably would be a better proposition for you to tackle this and state from the beginning it is your car and involving him will allow him to learn and one day if he is very lucky and he listens to everything you say and gets good grades and never talks back (yeah right, fantasy time over) your car may be his car but not until he is ready, which may mean in his 20's. Good luck to you whatever you decide, I think either car would be a great project. So far I have found these cars to be relatively easy to work on and this site is a tremendous wealth of information. Since he is young, make sure you always take extra safety precautions, wearing gloves, respirators and always triple check and have failsafe backup when the car is off the ground. And when he's ready you'll be able to do this.
  23. Agreed. I found the pics very helpful in working on my 1977. Anytime you combine jets or vintage planes and cars, nothing but fun.
  24. I am going to remove the differential to give me more access to clean things up and before I unbolt the axles and driveline, do I need to mark these so when I bolt them all back up they go on the same position they came off or is it just the driveline that is necessary. I assume the driveline will also slide out of the transmission when I do this. Does this also have to be marked so it goes in the trans at the exact same location? Thanks. This is becoming quite the "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" story. "If You Give A Guy A Z ......"
  25. If you want to go with the round head, I would go to the nuts and bolts department of your local ace hardware. Take your hex head and clamp and match up the screw length and threads. My local ace has lots of metric sizes in zinc and stainless. It is not going to be original but more original looking than hex and they are cheap. You also only have to buy the amount you need not a box of 20. I have never had success replicating bolts, nuts and screws at any of the auto parts stores.
