It appears that the all mighty NSW Department of Motor Transport has changed. With the computer age they have lost this huge paper based repository at Roseberry. So now we can all have a chance to get things approved. It appears the average tech can not tell the diffrence between a Coupe, and a sedan, how bad is that. To the Tare weight there are plenty of public weigh bridges in NSW so if you produce the weight you need on a public weigh bridge ticket, the state DMT has to accept it. They don't have the repository to refute it, and they wont pay for a re-way. No I would not do that!!!!, not to a Zed the rear gaurds would rub on the tyres. cheers Steve :classic:

Hi , this makes interesting reading, and I would like to add to the disscussion even though it is all just about done. Take the diff better in your possesion than the wrecker. If it is an R180 the pinion will have an odd number of teeth not 10: 41 it will probably still have a 39 tooth crown wheel, compatible to your R180 in the Zed. These parts to a die hard four cylinder operator could be bucks or swapping power for a part you may need. If it is an R200 it may be the same gear set but you may have an LSD optioned in. For my money investigate you need to know before it gets towed. To the gear box I must agree with Alan, you should have a bent stick © B series box, if you have the later zx box you are also in good sted they altered the first second ratio combination to pull the taller diff ratios better. So you should be quicker off the mark with snap changes. My2c cheers Steve:classic:
  3. For the gas recirculation circuit, Top breather to intake filter side and lower crankcase breather to intake manifold engine side of the throttle valve. This circuit relies on the vacum balance from one side of the throttle valve to the other, to operate smoothly with the fuel management system. For ease of of maintenance and reliability, also not having to make breather bottles and blind line filters,I would just keep the existing in good condition, side benifite of keeping it is you displace all your crank case gasses in under two minutes of normal running. A good tune check for this system is, get to running temp let the RPM settle to idle, if your gas recirc system is working properly you can make the engine stumble or stop by cracking the seal on the oil filler cap. To the injector cooler fans, they where introduced at the time when California smog law was dialing the L series engine fuel management up to the max. To maintain serviceability with the engine leaned right out heat build up was controlled by these fans and bonnet vents. If you do not need to dial your smog management in so tight, dump the fans (more weight, only good for pickups). hope this helps Steve :classic:

off my auto rego paper, so NSW Motor transport know the weights.
  5. sjcurtis replied to That Ozzy Guy's post in a topic in Australia & NZ
I can confirm for you 1040kg is the registered weight of an auto 240z (coupe) in NSW I have papers in Hand rego papers for 2000 at Glenbrook for my 12/71 auto. took all evening to find the papers cheers Steve :classic:

I think we in Australia got trapped with the supply and demand problem ( market forces), when we wanted the 2 seaters the factory could not supply. The factory sent a lot of 260z in 2 by 2 because that is what was surplus to build off the line. my 2c cheers Steve:classic:
  7. sjcurtis replied to LaMe_'s post in a topic in Open Chit Chat
LA ME, first of all let me say welcome, if it is a 260z 2+2 you are after you will have no problems finding one and you will get a good one quite cheep. Where in this great land are you I know it is somwhere on the big island. Once we know the answer the quicker we can help. Near home last week I saw two for sale reasonably priced. cheers Steve:classic:
  8. I also run a fuel injected Z. I would start by confirming fuel pressure is in range, make sure the fuel filter and lines are clear. check the fuel pressure regulator is operating correctly. next check airflow meter flap for smooth operation next check full throttle switch in the throttle sensor is not stuck closed. (this will supply full rich by itself) next set the igmnition up from base line check plugs, lead, distributor cap internal and external check rotor button and then re tune the ignition. next check all connectors around the engine are not loose or damaged. This is what I call step 1 You should find one or more problems by this point, also your problem rich mixture and poor running should start to improve. let me knoe how this goes and I will try to steer you through to a fix. Point of interest My latest smog test figures are: CO 2.11 % HC 270 ppm 6/73 with 100368 miles Cheers Steve :classic:

I must agree with EScanlon, I have a 6/73 HS30 factory 110 red with off white (beige) interior and black armrests. I to cannot confirm if colour matched armrests are original. my 2c Steve:classic:
  10. I was living at West End , Townsville in the early eighties and in 1985/86 a local car whole sale car yard in Townsville across Ingham road from the Showgrounds lost their dealers operating licence. They tried to sell a red 240Z with major frame damage, loosely covered up by a dodgy brothers repair. Main Roads Department QLD persuied the case. The repair was considered so dangerous, that Main Roads Department QLD impounded the Zed and considered it to dangerous for the road ever. Instant red sticker. My question did this car get out of jail and if so how. If this is your car there will be court records in Townsville Court House circa 1985/86 that will have the chassis number and all. This would open a can of worms. I thought it was the same car when I heard your explanation of the damage area , when I saw the photos I was sure. As for the repair I wish you luck, it will not be cheap, but if you can do it will be very satisfying. cheers Steve :classic:

from the way this all sounds liquid wrench is hard to apply and for the all over treatment you fill up the pool then drive in. SPLASH On a serious note, those two little position wheels have to spin along the angle plate with the two stop positions, you will have to spray them both very well, then move the door a lot to free the wheels then spray again and work again until it oprates smoothly. The best spray for the job is BOE-SHIELD made by a company from norht of Seattle WA called BOEING. It will do the whole nine yards for lube on the position wheels and suppress any corrosion you may have at the same time. good luck Steve :classic:

Do you have any external leaks around the tank area, or is the tank still intact. I think I should explain, I think you have all missed what I was trying to convey. I have seen horific fuel tank rust on cars in Australia. ie the fuel tank on the imported C20 chev, it displayed very little in the filter or the hose line rust build up. It just started leaking thru the bottom of the tank thru rust holes. Just this month a guy in Towoommba had a breakdown on a ford AU 2 Falcon ute with fuel injection failure lots of rust in the line and blocked filter as well. cleaned and flushed the systems came back to normal no more rust in the lines or filter. (AU 2 has a plastic fuel tank). I was trying to say if a particular gas station has a rusty tank you can get the particals in your tank because we dont have legislation to mandate final filters to the pumps so some operators dont fit them. A cumulitive build up can take a while but if you are a creature of habit the blockage will get there. The average Guy does not chase a fuel fliter on a regular basis, so the first thing you know is bingo my engine is playing up 10 miles later my car stopped. I admit it is not the only possibility but in QLD it is very possible. Any way, I hope your tank is not rusted. good luck Steve.

I carried out a repair to the headlight switch unit, lucky I was told to watch out for the springs and things, they fell out. I cleaned up the plates re-lubed and set the spring units back up greased the two switch plate tracks and re-assembled. felt good and rolled through the positions nicely. caried out installation connected the wiring and hey presto my lights work in all advertised modes. refitted all the plastics re-checked packed up my tools, happy. zed operational again Steve :classic: :classic: :classic:

I agree you have the worst case of contaminated fuel system I have ever seen in a Zed. It is not unusual for most of that to get pumped into your tank from a bad ( read unscrupulious) petrol station with badly rusted tanks common in QLD. dont write your tank and lines off yet, I recommend flushing lines and tank in the car. then fit new filter and drive for week and then check again. If you can get away from the tank change do so. good luck Steve :classic:

I think the most important tool is the phone followed by the phone book or a local directory. I normally require both professional repair, shortly followed by large amounts of cash when I play fix it . I always try to get the job done professionally if I can afford it. I only have minimal hand tools and a long list of numbers for repair shops. my 2c cheers steve:classic
  16. 350 is a great engine. I drive one every day, as my daily driver. The RTA really Suck with the 229 ci limit it equates to not enough cubes. I reckon the vh45de would have been nice to try here in NSW, not know. My 2c cheers Steve :classic:
  17. The problem is in the Dollars, to many zero's. I think the figure is closer to $25000 and I would say that is conservative. My 2c Steve:classic:
  18. The L series engine uses ambient pressure at the top of the rocker cover at the gas recirc elbow , it is the lower PCV hose from the crank case to the inlet side of the manifold that uses the vacume flow. the normal elbow hose goes to the airfilter box to provide a filtered air supply to the rocker cover/engine internals. with this elbo open to atmosphere it reverse flows when the throttle plates close off and the PCV closes off holes or bad seals in the fire wall will pass the gas inside. For me I would have a full PCV system doing positive gas recirc fitted throught the filters. My 2c Cheers Steve:classic:

1020 yes thats the right number, I had that on my old NSW rego, and it did not change with the injected engine. I am interested with the amount of 240z sedans in Australia my Queensland reg says sedan as well but the same car was a coupe in NSW . My 71 auto on NSW rego has 1020 as well. my 2c cheers Steve:classic:

Gee, I am at a bit of a disadvantage as I do not know what you drive. but the best combination is as your friend stated for most normally aspirated classic Zeds pre 1984. The reason for the zx 5speed is because it has the right hardware and it is a B series box with age on its side, and the ratios are not to bad. The R200 comes in a number of guises but what you need is the large center 4 pinion LSD. I run the 3.9 ratio on mine ( the allrounder). You need to sit down at this point and determine the ratio you want. Nearly all of the R200 ratio,s can be found in Australia. cheers Steve:classic:

For my money the answer is metal I think. The reasoning is on my body rebuild we found onr of these badges minus one attachment stud buiried in the junk under the wiper schuttle rh side. might have been retro. cheers steve:classic:
  22. I saw a picture in the middle of these posts of this short little Italian guy with a huge smile, well thats Carlos, Carlos you should be smilling I know your sales are going through the roof. Keep up the good work. my 2c Steve:classic:
  23. I think you are right about the engine stuff, you will see it from time to time in Japan on the net, but price and actual numbers available will preclude any export. Those engines are so rare, they could have been fitted to space shuttle, thats how much chance we have of getting our hands on one today. Good luck Steve :classic:

240Z, Hope you can get your suspension up to scratch shortly. As for British weather, I thought it was always sunny and warming this time of the year( thats what the ADDS say and they are in colour). That Ozzy Guy, I think you are just having a few little teething problems with your Zed, it should all come good and your reliability will get better as you go . Just keep focused it will happen. Zpeed, I think we all live with the dread of bad fuel, as for passing slow traffic I find if I come up quick enough on the freeway its good they see the bright 110 red coulour and move over, the wife siad they just stare as though it must be a 350Z replacement. Ah sounds good. I would love to drive up to Mt Beauty from Lakes Entrance, that would be a good climb. Cheers Steve :classic:

Thanks Escanlon. Thanks Jeff. This is why the site is so good because we have common issues we are all working through. I new you would give me good direction as to where I should focus my fault finding and repair for this problem. I suspected the switch was at fault, as I had to do a night drive home 2 weekends ago so I used a toggle switch to jump power at the fuse box, supply this circuit with power and the lights and dipping switch worked as advertised. It is definitely primary power to the circuit that is my problem. I will work through the process and get back with my results Thanks again Steve
