It's always what you least expect
Ok I bought a 1972 240Z with a L28 engine. I assumed (yeah yeah I know) that the engine was just transplanted from a newer car, since thats what the guy told me. N42 castings on both the block and head. Anyway, I had really low compression on number 6 cylinder. To save myself the time and trouble, I buy a complete head with low milege, from a guy, buy all the gaskets, and new head bolts. I take off the old head, and low and behold some one rebuilt the engine and put flat top pistons in it, meaning that the exhaust valves where all having intimate realationships with the pistons. My question is, for a quick fix until I have the money to rebuild the engine. Can I use a dremel to notch out the piston?

Yep, .010 intake, and .012 exhaust. I suspect a burnt exhaust valve. The exhaust sound at the muffler has that signature pop, pop, pop at idle. I squirted a little oil in down the cylinder, and no change in readings, as well. Besides there is absolutly no smoke out of the tail pipe so I pretty much have ruled out rings. There is nothing I would of wanted more then to NOT have to yank the head. Well at least I don't have to pull the whole block, for a ring job.

Hey I'ma new guy
Thank's. I checked his Ebay store and he has no parts manuals as of yet. I will hit up MSA as well. Where do I get my CZCC number from? Well after doing my best to sync the carbs last night, I had them adjusted "almost" perfect. I was just trying to get them in the ball park to get it to run more smoothly. I was using a synch tool my uncle gave me from his MG days. Anyway even when I got them in the ball park, it shook like a grain of rice on a subwoofer. This morning hooked my compression gauge and OH BOY.... PSI reading were 170,170,140,130,170,60. cylinder number 6 is only 60 psi. So now it's OFF WITH ITS HEAD!!!

Thanks Bruce. After viewing the ztherapy site I am considering core charging my carbs and buying a set of carbs and an intake outright. Here is the frankenstien set up currently on the car

Hey I'ma new guy
The fender well tag prefix is L24. However according to the guy I bought the car from the engine did come from a new Z. The newer Z engine came from a 280Z/5speed. I can also tell you the block is painted blue.

Hey I'ma new guy
Thanks Conedodger. I have the stock SU carbs, but I don't know if they are 72 carbs, or the carbs that came off the 280Z. I would prefer the carbs and intake with the least amount of hoses and such, for a cleaner look. Also what is involved in swapping out the points ignition in favor of an electronic set up from something like a later model Z or Maxima from the early 80's. By the way when I get over this serious case of lazyness I will most pics of the manifold/carb set up.

Reposting since I accidently stepped on someone elses post...Sorry Hey Guys, the name's Daryl. Been an American V8 guy all my life, but was looking for a project car for my 15 year old son and I to fix up and drive around on the weekends. Came across a 72 Z on Craigslist that claimed had been sitting and needed the carb adjusted. I show up it runs.....barely. But it was good enough for me. Paid the guy, towed it home and me and the son got to work. After doing some homework, the block and the head both say N42 meaning it's a 280Z engine.Correct? However it has a points style ignition leading me to believe that at least the distributer was from a 240z. The intake manifold says E88 and has a bunch of smog'like looking attachments like hoses and valves that are all plugged with bolts, nails, and wooden dowels. I would like to install electronic ignition, and put an intake manifold without all the smog junk on it. OK enough rambling. I should probably post this question elsewhere here, so maybe someone can point me in the right direction. By the way this site is great. Daryl
