thanks for the input guys. I think the reason for him saying not to use the e31 was just because of the valve size not the compression or head design.

Ive actually spoken to dave before. He did recommend the N42 over the E31 but didnt get to much in detail other than that. Ill give him a call again. Im not trying to spend a whole hell of alot on the build just because if i was gonna spend alot of money on an l series i would just go ls1 but with that said I do want a decent set up that has a little more go than a stock 240z and is fun to drive

Yeah I have heard the quench on the N42 isnt as good so its more prone to knocking. Do you think I would be better of using my E31 head off of my L24 and installing 280z valves? Does anyone have an idea of what that might run me? What did it cost you to work your P79 head over

Do you know if the N42 head has a spot for a mechanical fuel pump?
  9. I think as long as you go with an early close ratio 5 speed you will not be disappointed it should be a straight swap and would give you the same performance with a better cruising gear for the highway. If you are wanting strictly gas mileage you can swap the zx 5 speed but you will lose performance unless you swap to a 3.90 or higher rear end

Where are you located?? I would definitely sell it I have no use for it

Sounds good thanks for the help! Ive got the cylinder head I'm just looking for a good F54 short block right now.

Ok so I'm looking at using an F54 flat top l28 and a N42 head with a reground cam electronic ignition 6 to 1 header SU carbs lightened flywheel close ratio 5 speed and 3.90 R200. Should make a pretty quick car considering the light weight of the 71. My question is is the CR going to be ok with the F54/N42 combo and what cam specs would you recommend. Z-Engine Calculator says that N42 on a flat top motor with felpro 1mm headgasket should be 9.97:1 CR. Sounds like it would be okay to me but there are many of you with more L series experience than me.
  15. Since nobody else will help you take talk to Dave rebello he builds l series motors. You also could use your motor mill your cylinder head down and use a slimmer head gasket to raise compression ratio a bigger cam 6 to 1 header with exhaust new plugs better wires better coil cold air intake that would be a good start

I didnt use tape. I just mounted to the holes that held the factory lower valence onto the car. Solid as a rock.

Make certain you have the door to fender seal because that will cause your car to leak into your floorboards pretty bad.
  18. Yeah the price can really vary alot. I would say you can get a fairly nice 280z that doesnt really need much work for 4-6k. If you want one you can drive and fix up I would look between the 2-3k range. If you want a real gem youre looking in the 10k price range
  19. Imo the z series is great. A lot of fun decent gas mileage great looks and a myriad of parts that are fairly cheap. I would say a 280z would be your best option for a dd. Less prone to rust most likely going to.have.ac and a 5 speed
  20. I love my coupe and I definitely know after having a bunch of z cars I definitely wouldn't compare the ride or handling ha ha. What can you do about the bumpsteer I know msa has a bumpsteer kit

I cleaned and polished a set just like these for my 280z. Used stainless wool and then used a corded drill with a powerball and metal polish. Then I painted the inserts. They came out pretty good.
  22. I would use the MSA 6 to 1 header but use a different muffler. The MSA mufflers seem to drone and be a little loud. Try something like a magnaflow or dynomax or something

Saw the commercial for that show today. Going to have to watch it just to see the Z's now

Yeah somebody just stripped the spokes down to metal. You could just polish it and clearcoat it if you want but if not go buy some self etching primer, Krylon Rust Tough Primer and Krylon Rust Tough Satin Black spray paint and just paint the spokes. I did this on mine and it looks great. Idk if youre trying to redo the rim on the wheel too but if you are just wash it with dish soap and dry it really good and then get some gloss clear marine spar varnish and brush it on. I did 3 coats and it looks and feels amazing. The "wood grain" looks so nice.

Does anybody make a battery tray patch panel? Ive done this once before and just shaped the sheet metal and welded it in but id really rather have a replacement piece
