R200 CLSD Whining...
I have my old R180 that I plan to swap out. I would be surprised if there's any other axel related issues but it is possible. Absolutely everything was replaced when the car was restored, and it is stored in a heated garage and rarely driven. I plan on going over it inside out and backwards when I get it home, and I am also going to throw on a different set of tires. The whine is more of a howl, and it is weird how it came on. I had a leaky tailshaft bushing in the transmission that I fixed and thought it was a bearing in the transmission but its totally fine. I am familiar with the diff sounds our cars can make, but this is way beyond that. Thanks!!

Whitehead Performance is closed permanently?
EDIT: Just to be clear, I don't have any open orders with Whitehead but had been reaching out a few times, no avail. This explains why I haven't heard anything in return: http://whiteheadperformance.com/product-category/240z-260z-280z-70-78/240z-280z-diff-differential-axles-lsd/ Whitehead Performance is now permanently closed. Thank you for the support and business over the years. We are working to fill remaining orders Dismiss Perhaps I'm the last to know... Cheers.

R200 CLSD Whining...
That's great to hear, things slowed over last week but I am picking the car up tomorrow and should have pics of the wipe pattern towards then end of the week. Will circle back for sure....gears are stock ration 3.70 currently. Thanks!

R200 CLSD Whining...
I spoke to the shop and they had multi channel ears hooked to the transmission and the diff at the same time. It is definitely coming out of the diff, on throttle but off throttle the noise is gone. The car has new joints and new rear wheel bearings. I'm not sure a driveshaft issue could cause this whine and transfer that to the diff but after two different sets of eyes on it, I am not sure where to go from there. No pics have been taken of the wipe pattern but I am going to swap my old R180 in and see hat happens. Then I will have the R200 in my hands and can take some pics once I open it up. This whine came on over the winter when the car was just in storage in a heated garage and I have never abused this diff. If I am faced with replacing the ring and pinion, what options are out there? Not easy to find any other diffs for sale, and it seems like way overkill to go down the OS Gikken rabbit hole. Bummer as the 3.70 matches really well with that 83 5 speed, so I am open to suggestions! I'm in Vancouver, BC and could ship the diff to a provider...I reached out to Whitehead who also sold me the 5 speed but no reply. Thanks!!

R200 CLSD Whining...
You bet. For this one, I'm at arms reach to the shop. The shop in fact sub'd it out for the second set up to "get it done right" but I have to say I'm flying blind. Thanks again, hope to revert back with some pics of the wipe pattern early next week. Cheers!

R200 CLSD Whining...
That's a great question, it's still in the car at the shop. I will see if they took any pics and will revert. I am not keen to go any further without knowing more details and how thay wipe pattern looks will tell the story. I've had this diff for 8 years or so and its been totally fine with very few miles. I was sure it was the transmission but it's the diff. Thanks!

R200 CLSD Whining...
I have an R200 clsd 3.70 which developed a whine over the winter, the car is rarely driven at all. I ordered the "top shelf" bearing kit along with rear wheel bearings. Had a local shop do the diff and it's still howling after all bearings, and comes on strong over 50 mph in 4th. Transmission is a close ratio 5 speed that was rebuilt by whitehead. We had the chassis muffs on both the Transmission and diff and its for certain howling out of the diff. It was removed and had the shims checked and reassembled and still whining. The shop is saying ring and pinion, can't be anything else at this point. I've searched and read most threads I could find but I'm looking for suggestions here. Not easy to find one of these diffs and if it is the ring and pinion any suggestions where I could find replacement gears? I'm so far down the rabbit hole on this I may as well not give up now! Thanks everyone.

ISO a minty oil pan
If anyone has a lead on a minty oil pan that would be great. Mine had a floor jack misadventure and I want to pick up a second to prepare and swap over so this is a distant memory. Thanks everyone.

Headers
That's a head built for a RH drive car most likely. I had the same problem with an Uber expensive spirit garage header that is now wall art. I now have a fujitsubo and it bolted right up, great clearance to the rest of the SG exhaust. You can clearance the primary but it won't be pretty. Good luck.

Slip fit exhaust clamps
If you're anything like I am with access to mostly generic exhaust clamps, you may have struggled sealing up slip fit pipes. Ive tried lots, most recently walker slip fit stainless and was not satisfied with the result. The pipes I am dealing with are 2" and a flare on one side. I was in at bmw and got to chatting with the guys, they gave me one of their bmw clamps to try and it holds very well. As a result, now my 38 year old car has bmw waranty:

That stock pipe is tapered and is effectively a press fit. The search goes on...thanks a ton, guys.

On my path of recovery from my ill fitting RHD header, I need to find a new L24 block crankcase breather tune as I had to cut mine down. I'm also after a series 1 heat shield and if possible a valve cover vent tube. Apologies in advance for not posting this in the parts wanted section but those areas dont appear to see much traffic. Thanks in advance, cheers.

Spirit Garage / Fujitsubo Header Exhaust Flanges...
The only way I can see it happening is to cut the primary or do a better job than I did of collapsing the primary and then cleaning it up. In the end I'm pleased with the result, and the ceramic coating is awesome for containing the heat.

Spirit Garage / Fujitsubo Header Exhaust Flanges...
Ya, that "clearance" of the primary is not one of my finer moments in messing with cars. Anyway I now have that SG header and what I suspect was one of the last headers Stahl built that I gotta get out of my garage. Any interest, let me know...otherwise one header for each kid at Christmas sounds pretty sweet to me lol

Spirit Garage / Fujitsubo Header Exhaust Flanges...
I haven't installed the stock air box yet but I believe it will fit too, along with the pcv system as no way either would clear that monster of a SG header.

Spirit Garage / Fujitsubo Header Exhaust Flanges...
The Fujitsubo header has been ceramic coated and installed this weekend. I can confirm the Spirit Garage exhaust bolts right up no problems, just need to get it on the hoist for final adjustments but it sounds great. You can see the side by side pics of the Spirit Garage header and the Fujitsubo. You can also get an idea of how I had to clearance the primary for the steering shaft for the Spirit Garage header so unless they change the design I can confirm any LHD car would have the same issues as mine. I used my origami series 2 heat shield and its clear I need to track down a nice series 1 as the side nearest to the firewall is really not suited to that last primary. If anyone has a series 1 heatshield let me know!! I set up the float level finally with that glass sight kit and what a difference, synced the carbs and its all ready to hide out til spring. Cheers

I shrink wrapped the Z today
You can add a velcro seam as well, that's what we do with our boats here in Vancouver, crack it every so often to keep the air moving. Great idea to wrap the car!

Spirit Garage / Fujitsubo Header Exhaust Flanges...
Ordered oct 5, on my front door in Vancouver Oct 8th, unreal service thanks rhdjapan. Dropping this off at the coaters this morning and at first cut, it looks favorable that the SG center section will bolt right into the flange. Literally a bag of snakes:
