  1. Hey guys...I "rebuilt" my Nikki fuel pump yesterday...maybe I cheated a little bit. I had the original Nikki pump from my '72 and realized why it was replaced...very weak springs in the lower part of the pump...the engine would not go past 3,500 rpm with that pump installed (the pump lever and diaphragm springs were weak and wouldn't pull enough fuel through the pump). I searched for an NOS rebuild kit for the pump, but came up empty. I then began looking on Ebay for a similar pump and found one for a 1962-68 4 cylinder. It had the same part number on the lower assembly as mine, the same pump lever, and the same size fuel bowl top. The only major difference was the position of the fuel inlet on the bowl. I disassembled both pumps, cleaned the crust out of the Z's fuel bowl with "Value Craft" carb cleaner (cheapest at Auto Zone...it worked great , and put the fuel bowl and top onto the new lower assembly. It still looks old, but now has new guts...not bad for a $42 investment.
  2. Hey Guys...I was out in the driveway a few nights ago testing my new tuning device (a Unisyn carb adjuster) and thought my daughter (age 12) might like to see how it worked (and what a genius her Father is...). Anyway, I tore her away from the Disney channel for about 30 mins to show her a little more about the mechanical marvel that will be willed to her someday. I told her I expect her to learn how to take care of "her" Z before she learns to drive it. She now knows the difference between 3/8" and 1/2" ratchets, what a phillips screwdriver looks like, even what channel-locks are. I'm preparing a notebook for her that will go through the tuning procedure for the car (even has photos). She is getting more interested as time goes by, and I have told her it will be cool when her future dates find out she can drive a cool Z with a stick-shift trans., can tune cars, is a good shot with a pistol, doesn't throw like a girl, and isn't afraid of bugs or spiders . BTW, that Unisyn really did the trick on my carbs...the Z really hauls @ss now!

AJ...I agree...I would much rather have bright white than these two-tone tan covers. Attached are a couple of photos of a really nice survivor '72 with code 110 paint and an original white interior (an Ebay Z from UT as I recall). I believe the original is pretty close to bright white. Code 110 Zs are pretty common (look at the online 240Z Registry for proof of that), but the white interior really shows nicely (even more with blue met Zs like yours).

This is the same guy I bought the off color seat covers from (just got them today). Apparently he is getting out of the Datsun parts business. I think the covers he's selling now will probably be just as bad as the ones I got (they are shown on light gray carpet and appear somewhat lighter than mine, but who knows). The centers of mine are god awful...don't even look close to my crappy originals...more tan than "off white"). I would rather spend more money and get the most correct stuff than be perpetually disappointed with settling on covers I know will never look right. I will check with Bryan (thanks for the info, BTW).

Hey Guys...I bought a pair of seat covers to replace my badly beat-up originals (white interior), and got some covers that appear to be something closer to light tan than white. The seller has a no refund policy. Supposedly these covers were made by the same outfit that made the covers for the Nissan 240Z restoration program. I had heard that the repop covers weren't correct, but I'm amazed at how far off these covers really are. Attached are a couple of photos of the covers next to an off-white towel (don't have any bright white towels), and on carpet that is a very light tan (note the covers blend in very well with light tan). Has anyone been able to source correct "white" covers, or do I need to have them custom made? As always, thanks.
  6. Awesome stuff!
  7. Ok, I realize this post is rather old, but I found my Z's original fuel pump and I thought it might add a bit of info to this thread. My Z was built in 3/72 and has a code on top that reads "1Y01". From what I gather, no one in the club knows exactly how these Nikki codes relate to the date the pump was made. I'm guessing my pump has a late '71 code, but who knows. The pump has a part number of 271070 cast into the side, and also has a small bit of yellow paint still visible in the middle of the screw on the top cover. I got the pump in a box of parts that came with the car when I bought it from the original owner's son. I installed the pump and it will only supply fuel up to about 3,500 rpm, then the engine starves for fuel. The spring that puts pressure on the pump rod is weak...can these original pumps be rebuilt?
  8. Hey Guys...I am considering installing an R180 diff with 4.11s (non LSD) in my stock '72 (original 2.4 engine with no mods). I will also be installing a 5-speed with a .8 overdrive. The original 3.36 rear is still in it. I ran the numbers and with the .8 rear, and the final drive ratio will be about 3.29. I plan to leave the engine alone and am hoping the 4.11s will wake the Z up a little at stoplights. How streetable is this combination?
  9. Peter: I realize this is a 2 1/2 year-old thread, but I am looking for the same thing you are...how to install a Webasto sunroof in a 240Z. I'm sure I'm not the only guy on here who thinks the Zs are hot during the summer, and I think a sunroof would make a fun car even more so. I recently saw an MGB GT that had one of these roofs and I was impressed with how it worked and looked. The owner said it doesn't leak (and not many Zs are driven in the rain, anyway and works well. I found a couple of MGB Webasto roofs on Ebay UK and I may buy one. The roofs can be refurbished by a couple of different shops in the UK for a reasonable fee. I'm waiting on more info from the shop owners over there to tell me if the MGB kit will fit in a Z and what the cost is. The 240Z Webastos are hard to come by as not many were sold. Alex Manz - Ohio
  10. I read about these hood scoops in a book about Zs and this is the first one I've seen for sale...this one is for sale on Ebay now. The guy also has a European urethane front spoiler for sale. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Competition-240Z-260Z-fiberglass-hood-scoop-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem4aac60f2e8QQitemZ320719614696QQptZVintageQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

I have been following the story of your Z with great interest. My '72's oil pressure also registers slightly above "0" at idle. It has 90k orig. miles and appears to have the orig. oil sending unit. Like you, I'm also resurrecting an early Z (photos of it when it was new are in the "Vintage Photos" section...look for an orange '72 with a half white vinyl top and Calif. plates) with clapped out paint, mostly original, a fairly good driver (even with crap paint it still attracts a lot of attention...esp. when I drop off my 12 year-old daughter at school...the boys her age go NUTS over it). I'm going to be replacing the shocks and rear susp. bushings soon...it's good to hear that Monroe still offers replacements...I will go with parts that are as close to original as possible while restoring my Z and will buy the Monroes...I even put the original steel wheels and fugly hubcaps back on it with Toyo skinny radials (the orig. spare is a Toyo radial). The car still pulls smoothly up to 6,500 rpm and chirps the tires at the shift to 2nd. It's great that you put an original '70 steering wheel back in it, and the Hitachi AM-FM is also very cool. It appears the original early Zs are worth the most...everyone likes time machines. Good luck with your Z...great color, BTW.
  12. There's a decent looking blue '70 Z near Greenville, SC for sale on Craigslist. Not the best photos, but the buyer says it's mostly original, 170k miles, minor rust spots. The VIN is HLS30-04440. Seller wants $4,500, but everything is negotiable. http://greenville.craigslist.org/cto/2450009347.html
  13. Wow...great project! I also have a Calif. Z...zero rust is nice
  14. Hey All...saw this and thought one of you guys might be interested in a project car. No idea about rust, engine cond., etc. http://stlouis.craigslist.org/cto/2438919959.html

Is this a '70 only item? I have never seen a blue early Z air cleaner. I noticed there is no "Winter-Summer" control on it, and no carb heater duct connection. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-240Z-Rare-Blue-SU-Carb-Air-Cleaner-Housing-OEM-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem5d2f1fbeb7QQitemZ400222568119QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

These lenses must be rare as hens teeth to go for this amount! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Very-rare-240z-Euro-NOS-rear-combo-lens-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem415a782dcaQQitemZ280690699722QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Anyone up for a challenging (expensive) project?!!! It would be interesting to find out the VIN of this car. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-240Z-Nearly-complete-Datsun-240Z-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3a6660c75eQQitemZ250825721694QQptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucks

I know...provocative thread title that leads to a boring topic...hey, sorry guys! I have a very original '72 that is missing one of the screws that hold the WSW pump to the rear of the left inner fender. There is one screw still holding the pump...it's approx 3/4" long and is removed using a number 2 standard screwdriver. Who is a good source for original hardware for these cars, and is willing to sell me the nit-picky stuff I need? Also, when did the WSW pumps go from being mounted on the bottom of the tank to fender mounting? Thanks in advance for any help. Alex from Columbus
  19. I looked on this site and didn't find anything else about this Toyota 2000 GT replica (but I'm sure there is stuff somewhere). Anyway, the 2000 GT was originally supposed to be built by Nissan, but got shopped to Toyota...only a few hundred were built. I personally think the Datsun is a better looking car anyway. Later, Alex http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2009/01/toyota-2000gt-replica-based-on-nissan.html
  20. Rare color...love the lime green.

This car is either mis-listed as a '71, or some '71s came with hatch vents and '70 sail panel emblems, but I am certainly no expert on early Zs. Anyway... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-1971-DATSUN-240Z-VERY-CLEAN-ITS-AGE-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem1c1b0f7d22QQitemZ120713084194QQptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucks

My '72 had a dealer installed Frigiking A/C system (according to a sticker on the main unit) that had the same goofy control that your car has. The dealer in Calif. charged the orig. owner $575 for the system, and the bottom of the bill-of-sale says "Note: A/C is warranted through selling dealer only for 2 yrs or 24k miles, whichever comes first." I pulled the system out since it is sheer dead weight and non-original in my opinion. I have an extra accumulator, some of the original hose mounting clamps, and the cheesy control that I will mail to you if you want them.
  23. Zhead...you are a prince among men! Very magnanimous gesture...
  24. A set of the "Datsun" logoed 240Z mats was on Ebay within the last month. I hit the "confirm bid" button with what I thought was 5 seconds to spare (I'm a "sniper"), but either my internet was slightly slow then, or I miscalculated and missed by a second or 2. Those mats were decent and went for $10. The mats were the exact shape of 240Z footwells, so I am assuming they were the rare early mats. The original bill-of-sale for my car shows the dealer charged $30 for floor mats (and $100 for front and rear bumper guards... the same kind I see in old Adco ads). The dealer padded the hell out of my Z... probably the main way for dealers to make money (gouge?) for Zs (the dealer padded the bill by $1,005 on my car...$575 for crappy add-on AC and some other stuff). Does anyone know what the dealer cost was for Zs? Did most of the early Zs come with no options (and what factory options were available)? Were Zs shipped from Japan with no options and then the stuff was all added by the dealers? BTW, the $20 shipping charge didn't discourage me in the least...I was prepared to go $45 on the mats.
  25. Great looking set-up. What shape was your front pipe in? I bet your car has an interesting story...why did it sit for 23 years?!
