Good luck with your engine swap. You might find more and/or better information at www.hybridz.org. what kind of engine is an L67 anyway?

I am just passing info along to those in the Sacramento area.

radiator fix?
Hi guys and gals, I sprung a leak in my '79 280ZX radiator. it is a small hole, in an easily accessible location, and i was wondering if it is easy to fix something like this. it looks like the hole was caused by a dent in the tube, probably from a rock. Also, what materials are required, and any other advice would be appreciated. I know the best solution would be to buy a new radiator, but I'd rather fix this one. Thanks, Ty

exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe connection
240ZX, Thanks again for the help. I've not had time to get to a junkyard for an exhuast pipe, and i'm still out of budget. What would be the performance loss by using the old exhaust manifold (from the L24)? Would there be any other side effects of using the smaller exhaust manifold with the L28? I really just want to be able to drive the car around town. Since i have the original needles in the carbs, its not like the engine is going to be putting out L28 power anyway, right? or am i wrong? Hopefully when money is less tight i can get the proper manifold and exhaust (or even a header) and upgrade to SM needles. thanks, Ty

exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe connection
Thanks again. I know that the flanges are different sizes, but i was inquiring about the pipe sizes. But, if the flanges are different, it would make sense that the pipe diameters are different all the way back to the exhaust tip. I guess a little thinking this through and i could have answered my own question again. I'll try to find a 79 exhaust pipe and then let a pro take it from there. -Ty

exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe connection
Thanks 240ZX, Since i'm new to working on cars, i like to check my ideas with seasoned veterans. the only hang up with welding a new piece on is that i don't have the equipment to weld. I'm sure i can fabricate some sort of connection. Are the diameters of the 79 exhaust pipe and my stock 71 exhaust pipe the same? thanks, Ty

exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe connection
Hi all, I have recently installed a 79 280zx motor into my 71 240z. I tried to bolt the exhaust pipe back up and realized that the 71 exhaust pipe flange is smaller than teh 79 exhaust manifold flange. What are my options to connect the two pieces? I've searched and all i've found is that the exhaust shop can fix it. How would a shop fix this? seems like they would need the exhaust pipe from a 280zx in order to fix it. Could i get an exhaust pipe from a junkyard and swap it over my 240? Considering i'm out of budget and in no rush to finish, what do you z guru's recommend? Thanks, Ty

71 Fuel Pump Wiring
thanks for all the information. You all have been a tremendous amount of help to me. It sounds like there is no cut off switch circuitry built into the 240z model cars. I think i'll proceed with hooking my fuel pump up through an oil pressure cutoff switch. Thanks again. -Ty

71 Fuel Pump Wiring
Hi All, I am trying to install an RX-7 electric fuel pump into my 71. I have found the stock wires near the fuel tank (green and black), and i have found the stock wires behind the radio (green and black/white). Both sets of wires were wrapped in blue tape. From what i've read, i can connect the fuel pump to the wires by the fuel tank, which is easy enough. But where do I connect the wires that are behind the radio? The wires behind the radio have a plastic female connector on them already, and I was wondering if there is a corresponding male connector hiding under the dash... I've searched and found the following threads, which have been very helpful, but don't quite answer my questions: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15897&highlight=wires+fuel+pump http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17496&highlight=power+electric+fuel+pump http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13725&page=2&pp=15&highlight=fuel+pump+cutoff I've read the discussion about connecting the fuel pump to an oil pressure switch and I'm intrigued by this idea, but as mentioned in the following thread, the Datsun engineers might have already had an idea for cutting power to the pump. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=983&highlight=fuel+pump+wiring Does anyone know if any cutoff switches or relays were incorporated into the stock design for the electric fuel pump? Thanks to everyone for their contributions to this site. -Ty

What should i replace while the engine is out?
Hey Beandip (or others), I'm curious about what kind of inline filter you are referring to? Did you just use the same kind that is up in the engine bay? Or is it a specialty filter? Also, i'd really appreciate a pic of your rx-7 fuel pump and filter setup. Bambikiller, Thanks for the tip on how to use quotes! thanks, Ty

headlight relay upgrade harness's for sale
Hi Dave, Thanks for helping out the z community in this way. I don't have the money or time right now for such an upgrade, but I would love to take advantage of your expertise and workmanship. Are you going to be making these on an ongoing basis, or will you be retiring once the initial momentum dies off? Thanks, Ty

Rebuilding and Replacing Engine
Thanks for getting this list together in one place. At some point in the future i hope to be able to finish my L28 transplant! I have many of the same questions. I'm assuming you are using the rx-7 fuel pump to get fuel to your carbs. if so, one thing to add is some way to shut off the power to your fuel pump in the event the ignition is on while the engine isnt running. I think some poeple have come up with a way to do it, but i forget how off the top of my head. Maybe it is a minor issue that gets addressed after the project is complete... -Ty

What should i replace while the engine is out?
Thanks for the help. i picked up the fuel pump from an '82 RX-7 for $35, which i think is kind of a rip off, but i'm too busy right now to find one on my own and pull it myself for cheaper. I asked the mazda wrecker to get the mount with it, and they said they would, but then they just gave me the pump (and some bad service). Just when i was getting frustrated with their lack of customer service i looked up on the wall and saw an aluminum softball bat with "THE MANAGER" written on it. No need to embarrass myself by demanding good service at a wrecking yard! So, now that i have a fuel pump, any ideas for mounting it? Also, I was wondering what is meant by "fuel rail" in this sentence, "You do need to use the 240 fuel rail", from Beandip's last post. (sorry, I haven't figured out how to insert quotes.) Perhaps if I get under the car with teh haynes manual, the 'fuel rail' would be apparent. Again, thanks for all the help. -Ty

What should i replace while the engine is out?
I found a mazda wrecking yard that will pull the fuel pump from a 79-81 RX-7 for $35. Not as cheap as $15, but a lot cheaper than the aftermarket ones i saw online. ChrisA, what brand fuel pump and regulator did you get? How much did it cost? Maybe i was looking at top of the line racing ones... Beandip, what else might i need to complete the RX-7 electric fuel pump swap? you mentioned no need for a regulator. Is that becasue the pump is very good and puts out the perfect constant pressure? or is there some other way to control the flow? Is there any way to test a used pump to make sure it works before buying it? does anyone have any advice on the pros and cons of the cheaper used pump versus the more expensive new pump? Some things are not a good idea to get used. is this one of them? (Apparently Beandip has had good luck with it.) Any suggestions on mounting the electric fuel pump? I guess that can wait till i actually have one in my possession. Thanks for all the help, Ty

What should i replace while the engine is out?
Bambikiller, Can i use an electric fuel pump from a 280? There are plenty of those around, but not so many '73 240's. Daniel, Unfortunately i have the N47 head which has round exhaust ports. The MSA sales rep said that i could use the N47 exhaust manifold with the carb setup. is this true? my plan was to use all the 240 intake/exhaust and fuel/carb system. however, it doesnt seem like it will work out. Will the square port exhaust manifold with the round port head work? any thoughts? i apologize if these are stupid questions. thanks, Ty
