I've been away from my beloved z now for about a month. I miss it... BUT. Here's some pictures of the new steel on the drivers quarter. No filler, this is all grinder and a little primer to keep it from rusting.
  2. Wow, that makes me jealous. I would just be worried about people always being so close to it like with dents or anything

Okay... I think the rims above are eagle alloys... still don't know about the black ones. I FINALLY put the quarter panel on from post 1 today, so I super excited about that. There was a lot of fabrication involved, since everything underneath was rotted as well. Luckily it didn't go too far so I just tacked in some modified flat bar and stitch welded the panel until it was a solid seam. No work for the fourth, and a happy independence day to everyone! but with our departure date drawing dangerously close, I plan to clean up the weld and start talking to the people at the paint shop again this week. I also decided to cut out the passenger side floor having done it once, I've found the frame rail to be the difficult part, which is good on that side. Okay, so: passenger side floor cutting, cleaning, fabricating, both floors welding, frame rail welding, cleaning... another whole weekend. Plus paint and the interior. Meh, it can happen in two weeks, right? Then there's MSA... Where are my headers?... Once again, pictures are taken and waiting to be uploaded =)

Here's that other car in case anyone else was wondering about it. You'll have to excuse my ignorance on the topic of Japanese war crimes, I had never heard of such things outside of Hitler and Stalin. Funny how high school teaches history based on wars, huh?

I saw a video on youtube of a white z with the flag on a track with some ferrari's and some vette's, I wonder if it's the same guy? Kinda stole some inspiration to be honest. But I was looking at a carbon fiber hood so that's why I did it black here. I would also like to point out the white tint and gunmetal grey five spoke rims (not flashbacks, for sure!) and the fender mounted mirrors. Jon - why so harsh as to compare it to a swastika? You know the swastika USED to be a sign of luck in the far east...

Wasn't it Ed Gein that would... "borrow" people's faces? I think he just wasn't sure what look he was going for... I can relate Btw, what do you think of this look?

Well I use forza to take pictures of what a graphic might look like ON the car, but sorry, no. I don't have paint.NET installed... But here it is if you want it http://www.getpaint.net/download.html#download

Okay... While I'm waiting for my headers, I'm looking at some other things that need attention. First, my rims are from some zx (I think) and the tires don't hold air for more than two days. Luckily, my great uncle Bill races a 280z and has a set of rims to sell me. If anyone can ID them, that'd be great. Otherwise, I can wait the three weeks to put them on. I also dug up ONE of those black rims you see there. I think it came off an old porshe 944 but that's another whole story. If someone could ID those as well I be very grateful. Furthermore, we have decided on a moving date of July 30th, so if anybody between here and Florida could recommend some places I should stop by, or good garages, since I'll have less than a thousand miles on my z before we leave... Or maybe some garages to Avoid? other comments? Also, here are some pictures of my custom frame rail =)

I spoke with the people at MSA and from what I hear the exchange program is very smooth. Chances are good that I'll be running again next weekend!

No doubt about the loss of quality. Even and especially workmanship is gone, it seems. Even where I work, it has been almost a year and I've yet to get any formal training or schooling, which is supposed to be a requirement of the company... Also, where should I mount the throttle return springs now that I no longer have a heat shield?

I got to install new headers this weekend! But there is a pinhole in the welding and there is evidence of an exhaust leak:mad: *sidenote* '71 z 4speed stock everything... until now. The hole in the headers is literally about the size of a standard sewing needle I was wondering if anyone else has had any issues with MSA, and how smooth the RMA's are. I plan on calling them tomorrow. I have pictures, I can upload them tomorrow

I just watched harold and kumar again the other day... THEY said there was a White Castle in Cherry Hill. Anyway, I would love to see a blue z with that blue and white castle in the background... *.*UPDATE*.* The car has to come out of the garage this weekend so I can put a water pump in my girlfriends civic... right down to the timing belt...

Cherry hill, huh? Tell me, is there a white castle near where you live?

Well I ordered coated headers from MSA yesterday they shouldn't be long now... Also, with a little help from xenon (thanks for the link) I have verified the numbers matching status of my l24 So, while I was removing the stock headers, I found the smog fittings to be quite... In the way. Also, do I have to remove the intake manifold to get the headers off? If so, how much work does that really entail? :stupid: I am quite intimidated by the concept. Anyway, I did actually DO something today! Here's some before pics That floor was Bondo'd in place. Sigh. The Bondo trapped water, making the rust holes in the rocker panels seen above. Well, I guess that's what stick feeds are for, right? ... Now I need moar CO2 :ogre:
  18. What a great way to scare someone into full coverage! But it comes as no surprise that you would do a better job on your z than a professional shop. The only real advantage they hold (usually) is access to parts and expensive manuals. Besides, they don't share the passion

Hey vibes, it appears our cars are in very similar situations, and it just so happens that I am too moving to Florida. However, I will be in the Orlando area. =)
  20. The future of the z is also supposedly a "hybrid sport" with the use of gasoline AND and electric motor, rough unofficial guestimates are about 360 hp and 450 ft/lbs. Gives a good idea of what electric motors are capable of. For the sake of facts vs. opinion, all of this came from an article I read in Road & Track (April 2011) on the 380z's powertrain options vs. Toyota's FT-HS (the hybrid supra throwback)

Forza motorsport - Where dreams are driven Aside from several obvious factual errors (here is a 439r, not a 240z) This is pretty much it. I WOULD like to move the bullet mirrors back up to the fenders, but I'm not entirely sure about the legality. And, in case you're wondering, yes, I do ALL of my visualizations via forza. It is extremely useful. Btw, if anyone has some radical ideas they'd like to see on the car before they go and spend a bunch of money on paint, I'd be happy to mock one up for you.

Thanks Dennis, as much as I love a challenge I am quite sure I'd like to get away from the salty doom. Plus, there's more of a z community down there =)

As far as I can tell so far, the entire engine is stock. Dizzy, carburetors, clutch, exhaust, all of it. The car was factory orange, painted Datsun blue, and repainted orange again. By my hand, the z will take on a white/carbon theme. The only reason, really, I know this is because I'm sanding down the whole thing having discovered the excessive bondo work. There are several exhaust leaks (and poor welds) on the headers so I plan on putting in an msa 3-2 coated header system with twice pipes. Ultimately, I will be moving to Florida and the car will be a daily driver. I would love to do a vq swap, but that's a long way off.

Then disaster struck... ...and it gets worse Brazing. So I washed it off Soon after this, winter struck. Not much got done in a cold northern Minnesota garage, except maybe a little sanding. But now it's spring =) so the Bondo'd floor came out and I fabricated a new one out of 16 gauge steel. It fits well, but I wanted to do a bit more cleaning before I put it in. When it goes in, I plan on going over it with the acetylene to make it bow. and now you're all caught up. More pix coming soon =)

It's been about a year since I bought my '71 240z 4 speed with 133k miles, but I haven't done too much to it so I'll try to keep y'all up to date. Please, any suggestions are welcome. That being said, here are some pix from the day it showed up at my door It wasn't long before I started tearing into it You can probably tell, but as I started to tamper with the wheel wells, I found rust at first, but as I dug deeper, I found an existing repair panel. It goes up to about an inch from the body line and was riveted. My new repair panel will be welded, since I have access to just about every type of welding known to man =)
