  1. Finally got around to fixing my hitachi radio from a later s30. Hope to track down a radio manual on it. Notice It doesn't have an antenna switch. It has 2 seperate wires coming out of the back they're probably for an automatic power antenna. The PS button on the front im thinking is station presets?. Sound quality is WAY better than any other hitachi factory radio i've ever had. Very cool to see this rare stuff we never got here in the states.

You checked the speaker balance to see if that speaker channel is ON? When you reversed polarity did you smell anything burning or see smoke?

which wires are you using for speaker wires? is your speaker good? do you have another speaker to test it with?

That cap you pulled off looks like the ones attached to the volume control. Perhaps you put that back on wrong. Take a picture of the cap you pulled off and put back on. Maybe i can see if its in the correct place.

Is this the radio you messaged me about adding a din cable and this is a later 280z radio right? Which radio are you working on? I've rarely seen these copper coils by the fuse burn out. Do a continunity test on it to see if its bad.

Ok, finally finished this project. Still interested? What do you think is a fair price? I can offer a 6 month guarantee from the time you get your car finished and running.

crap, just noticed i posted this in the wrong area. Can someone please move this into the s30 interior or electrical area?

Nice, I like the automatic antenna too. Those are big pieces of aluminum. Plenty of room for adding other goodies. I've always wanted a atomic jeco that syncs time with my wireless home internet. Arduino and step motors and plenty of c code but very cool.

You've got ballz That's an expensive radio you're modifying. I'm curious how you're going to switch from radio tuner to your amp. You're using a relay for that right? Are you going to turn off the tuner or just disconnect it from the amp via relay? You ever think of adding a fm tuner into the mix? Perhaps bluetooth fm receiver? I think it would be much easier to just switch between your amp and the radio via a bluetooth or a physical switch. Cool project. I like to see these kind of mods that improve the old stock radio's functionality and sound quality. Edit: just looked more closely at your schematic and i must say thats an interesting but complicated way of doing things. It answers my questions about tuner power. It looks like you're using the tuner logic signal to actuate the relay. Is that going to be kosher longer term?

The sound quality is what you'de expect from a 1978 radio but it IS stereo. All you need is a 5 pin din cable and a toggle switch to change power + in for input sources. Take the bottom side off and you will see a "C" on the pcb. This is the power in for aux. You will have to cut the blue power + in at the harness where it goes into the radio and wire it thru the toggle switch. When you flip the switch, you send power to the aux in side. Switch it the other way you send power to the tuner. You will have to find a place to put the aux in jack and the toggle switch. There are some replacement cigarette lighters (for us non smokers) that have a usb ja Some quirks to this, like the volume control on the ipod/iphone is more precise than the radio volume knob and the radio dial is not lit up. Put some decent speakers on this and it should sound much better than the earlier mono radio's. This will only work on the late s30 radio's and probably 280zx radio's that have the 5 pin din. These radio's were set up to have a tape deck connected via the din plug and this mod uses the tape deck input jack. On the 280zx radio's I am not sure if the circuit board is the same as the kms-2411z so be careful. I am using din pin #3 to feed power in for aux. Out of curiosity i tried another radio i had and the sound was a bit better. Less crackling and muffled. I think the capacitors on these old radio's really need to be replaced to get the best sound out of this 1978 technology. Edit: I take no responsibilty for someone wiring this up wrong and their radio blows up! Edit #2: Just remembered that they make an aux jack with shunts built into it. This could be used to toggle between aux and tuner and there would be no need for a toggle switch. http://www.allelectronics.com/item/smj-6/3.5mm-stereo-mini-phone-jack-w/2-nc-shunts/1.html

Have you considered Tig? I sure like the bead you can lay down with tig on thin sheetmetal and you don't have to set wire speed on tig like you do on mig. One less thing to fine tune.
  12. This is how they did it from the factory. Right side is just notched and left side has a cut out. You can get welting on ebay and sew it on to keep the carpet from fraying

Hope you didn't pay much for that thing. Gonna be alot of work getting it looking good. You can epoxy the circuit board back together if it's broken and fortunately you have a schematic for it. I tend to like the later s30 and s31 better because it's the car everyone in high school dreamed of owning back in my day. I remember looking at a huge long row of them at the datsun dealer in the summer of 78 and dreaming of owning one. You sure like the calendar clocks and they're not from pre-74
  14. One thing i've noticed is Nissan sometimes leaves out the fine details in their drawings when they're covering a large area or lots of different parts. You have to drill down as far as you can in the manual until you can hopefully get a diagram that is more detailed.

check out the picture i just edited the post and added it. Most of the hitachi's you see are AM only right? Very important to have a clean antenna jack and plug in a real antenna to the jack. Not just a piece of wire. Proper voltage is important too. Make sure its a good power supply. Not scanning could be a couple problems. Electrical or mechanical. First check mechanical. Clean all the moving linkage and spray deoxit into all the linkage and lube with auto electronic lube. There are alot of moving parts to that auto tune. If it's electrical then you can try prodding and poking with a plastic probe onto the circuit board while it's running to see if you have a cold solder joint. edit: "either 1 direction" means the little motor direction switch needs cleaning. When it reaches the end of the scan a little switch is turned that changes the direction of the motor. Spray deoxit inside this switch. The switch is right on the top side and easy to get to.

you do quite a business in clocks. This was a while ago? I haven't seen any jeco's converted to quartz on ebay lately or you're hoarding? BTW, have you ever seen a signal seeker hitach am/fm 8 track?

Mind if i ask what you sold it for?
  18. The fiche shows 2 fairly big washers on each side of the floor on the exploded view on the upper right. I guess thats all that was needed.
  19. hr369 replied to hr369's post in a topic in For Sale
Surely the conversion to 240z is worth more than an old used one.
  20. hr369 replied to hr369's post in a topic in For Sale
Ok, put the 240z benzel and a new lens on and replaced the 3 caps and transistor. Still need to braze on 2 ears from the 240z donor clock (pic 2) where the benzel is held on and braze up some screw holes and attach the back mount. and paint it. Unfortunately I'm sacrificing a 240z clock for every one I will convert. How much is this clock worth to someone? I've never seen one advertised.
  21. Do you think a little reinforcement will be needed on the underside? Thats quite a bit of leverage it has and the mounting points are small and might bend the floor if someone pushes their feet on it hard. Just a thought. I've never looked at one that was installed from the factory. Don't eat and drive. They might give you a breathalyzer test

Speaking of oscillators, Eric was asking me if you've tried his oscillator yet
  23. Probably a good rubber washer on the bottom side will seal out any water. Wifey points are always a plus! My wife puts all kinds of stuff on the floor like shopping bags and crap so it probably would have gotten in her way.

You got me to thinking. I probably should make a silicone mold of the 240z rally clock benzel so i can replicate it in black abs.

This is for your 240z? Did you know that that syle clock (calendar clock) was made for 74-76 S30's and not the 240. In these pictures the calendar clock has 00125 printed on it and the middle clock is a stock jeco 240z clock. The benzel would have to be changed and modified. The 240z benzel has 2 mounting screw in different locations whereas the calendar clock has 3 mounting screws. Also, a new plexiglass lens would have to be used inside the old 240z benzel. Also, the 240z mount would have to be attached to the backside of the calendar clock. The second photo is the calendar clock beside a 240z rally clock. Notice the calendar clock is a little longer too. Now having said all that, I do believe a 240z rally clock housing could be used and not need any modifications. But those things are few and far between nowdays. It would be a cool addition to a 240z because the clock fonts look very similar to the rally clock but it's a bit of work. It wouldn't work for the purists that only use parts that came with the car but i think it would look cool. Oh and for those that seek perfection... the calendar clock only has a 31 day month. For shorter months you have to advance it to the next day. Beautiful analog!
