Is this 76 280Z worth getting?
I love my automatic in heavy stop n go traffic. The jatco trans is very reliable. I've had one in mine since i bought the car in 98. However there is a weak area and thats the clutches for 2nd gear. You can test it by going about 30 mph and giving it enough gas to downshift. If you hear the engine revs go higher and then you feel a lag, its the 2nd gear clutches slipping. If its good you should feel an immediate seat of the pants snap when it downshifts. Another area is reverse. Put it into reverse and hit the gas with a small blip. If you hear or feel anything strange like a popping noise there could be problems with reverse. If you're concerned about it, pick up a good used zx turbo automatic with the lock up torque converter. It has a stouter clutch setup and a little bit lower rpm cruising on the freeway with the lockup.

Oil the Clock?
- HLS30-00452 on Ebay - NEEDS WORK!
final price on #452 is $4800- 70 and 72 240z 2500$ each
No it means they've spent most/all of their lives in sunny calif and away from road salt- Datsun Parts LLC - gone to the dark side?
Apparently Datsun parts LLC doesn't have any LD28 cranks to use. I just sold one to a guy in wash state that was having these guys build his engine. I sent the crank to this business. Hope they don't mess it up, it was a very nice crank. He wanted me to end my auction early because the builder needed the crank yesterday.- 70 and 72 240z 2500$ each
"not bad" but not great. Depends on how much rust. So cal cars with blue plate(s) is a major plus. Engine and trans in at least one. I bet he would take 3000-3500 for both- 70 and 72 240z 2500$ each
thats 2500 each. Not too bad. thats orange paint not rust. http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/cto/5072416835.html- 2/70 #1901 what a waste
This usa LHD car is for sale in japan. Someone imported it and let it sit outside and rust. Looks like its been there quite a few years. I doubt anyone will bid on it. Probably will end up in the recycling yard. http://page16.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/u79436486- HLS30-00452 on Ebay - NEEDS WORK!
My crystal ball says final selling price 4500- Bought a car that looks like a shoe today
When those first came out they had a price tag of $20,000 us. All aluminum body and frame so no rust issues from a 15 year old car. Not sure i'de trust that onboard mpg calculator. I use the cell phone app Gasmate to calculate more precisely how much fuel is used. I'm generating a surplus of solar electricity every month and thought about getting a hybrid and putting a secondary battery pack in with a plug in charger but im just too cheap to fork out what they want for one. If you get tired of the gutless motor and want more power, try the early 2000's Vw tdi's. They get 50+ mpg and are pretty peppy. The diesel smart car is supposed to get 70+ mpg but that thing looks like a death trap. The first gen insight always reminded me of the wacky space age car in woody allen's movie Sleeper.- Nicely presented '70 on ebay
If you can afford a ferrari.... a 10k windshield is not a problem. The 6 month wait is though.- Nicely presented '70 on ebay
That 70 got a very nice price of 25k. I wonder if these guys do a rhd conversion before they ship overseas. Probably not because it would bring the value down because of originality. "We do our own Resto Mods mainly for export back to New Zealand where our main business is located and have also exported to Australia, Europe, Canada, Taiwan and Japan. We have done a fair number of Jensens, Datsun's etc. for our customers" This is the business they do in Ca. http://www.motorgems.com/?p=2047 check out his barn finds section.- 1/70 240z being parted out in japan
that car looks like it spent its life in japan not oregon. lots of series 1 parts for sale though. the front end looks like it came from another car. edit: looks like almost every part is on yahoo and priced at 1000 円he puts LA chop shops to shame yummy... series 1 console cheap http://page11.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/n145000623- 1/70 240z being parted out in japan
I have a project in mind for that cheap rally clock. Take a look at my post on the end of this zombie thread. http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/23919-a-good-screw-just-isnt-enough-it-must-oscillate/page-3- 1/70 240z being parted out in japan
"If it has not been this successful bid, we will exhibit in June as part by dismantling." and... nobody bid on it... so.... apart it goes I've counted the skeletons (LHD dashboards) of a few usdm s30's under this guys id. You guys in oz really follow these auctions alot don't you? I saw a link on an s30 oz board that was to an auction that i had won on yahoo japan. He said that that rally clock without oscillator should go for 400 aud. Was that you? patcon is right. This is #854- paul newman
He creamed that 510. ouch! Just in time for the sale of his race car on ebay. Bid is now 5 mil $ for his zx.- Project Boondoggle (or, so I went and bought a Z!)
That cracked thermostat housing would be my top priority. Epoxied aluminum + so cal summer heat= not good. You can pick up a good used one or a new one on ebay.- HLS3001754
and his older brother #516 across the pacific ocean is up for sale at 2x the price. This one is from san jose calif and i a one owner (woman) Appears to be all original and very well taken care of. http://page9.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k185607252- A good screw just isn't enough-it must oscillate!
8 year old thread back from the dead. Probably nothing else was done after these guys ran into a dead end and gave up. Well, since i've accumulated 3 of these clocks without oscillators, i've been doing a little research myself and ran across this thread. I'm not an electronics guru for sure but this much i think i've figured a little more out. It's a slave and master type with the slave being the clock gears and hands. The master is the oscillator/impulser. Smith clock co used to make these and people have made universal impulser's to retrofit the old smith clocks. Guess who made the oscillators for the later Smith clocks. Jeco supplied them. I think the only way to solve this problem is to find the correct motor voltage and start by tweaking the pulses. It would be helpful to know what the tuning fork frequency is but i have not found anyone who has hooked a scope up to one and measured it. There is an equasion however that gets you in the ballpark. I just have to know how long the fork is. This guy measured frequency https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vP3SE-wD6Q I've seen references to the datsun oscillator comparing it to the bulova tuning fork watch. The main difference is the bulova had a direct mechanical link from the fork to the "slave" part of the clock. Whereas the datsun clock is 2 completely seperate pieces whereas the Jeco turns the tuning fork motion into electronic motion (pulses). So it makes it easier to retrofit using more modern electronics. Whats confusing though is that some of the old slave clocks have a coil and some of the "less old" slave clocks refer to a motor. I don't think it matters that its sending pulses to a coil that moves a mechanism or a motor. I found a list of the types of clock motors and I believe the rally clock uses the stepping motor Synchronous motors, connected to the normal household mains supply (potentially (very) high power) Impulse motors, used to provide a magnetic impulse to maintain a pendulum (low to very low power) Miniature stepping motors, as used in quartz clocks and watches (low power) Conventional small DC motors - generally only used to rewind a spring (high power) Here is a universal impulser/oscillator they sell on ebay for 98$ http://www.piexx.com/imp2/imp22k.pdf- 1/70 240z being parted out in japan
Is 1/70 mfg date. probably car #11854? He blocked off the first 2 digits. I wonder what the thinking behind this car was. Its an oregon car that they imported into japan and they are now parting it. It looks salvagable. Just new floor pans. What a shame. Their starting price on parts is very cheap. Can't see him making much money parting it out. One scenario that comes to mind is seller advertising "rust free series 1 240z" buyer picks it up at the docks and takes one look at all the rust and is furious. someone in oregon now has a fat wallet and a smile on his face? neener neener... can't catch me.- AM/FM Semi-Automatic Antenna Upgrade
This is what I like to see. Upgrades using a combination of old and new technology. For those of you who would like to listen to pandora or mp3 player on their ancient but period correct original radio's you may be interested to know you can add mp3 functionality to the later model hitachi radio that have the round 7 pin din in the back. All you need is a 7pin din to mp3 male adapter jack. Sometimes technology can be a pain in the butt too. I have the automatic antenna feature on my 90 cressida and something went haywire in the antenna. When i turn the radio on the antenna motor keeps going after the antenna is fully extended. The only way to kill it is disconnect the battery.- Sanity check on 280z FI tests
Congratulations. There are californians out there that have lost their sanity and their dignity and sold their cars for pennies on the dollar because they couldn't get their cars smogged. The calif car i got had only the thermotime switch wires switched with the temp sensor wires. Easy to do but hard for some people to spot. There were 2 afm's in the back.. They always leave a trail of dissected afm's behind. now whatever you do don't spray the top of the engine at the car wash. I'm guilty of that too.- 20150513 204316
- what speedometer did i buy?
perhaps its from a 2+2 fairlady model. Anyone out there have a 2+2 fairlady? Some of their speedo's go up to 260 kph. Two of these are 240 kph. That rally clock isn't good without the oscillator. I'm hoping I got the oscillator in another batch of fairlady parts from the same guy. He had a bad photo of tons of parts but i expanded the photo and i think i saw the oscillator. The guy parting the 2 fairladys doesn't know anything about the cars. Its really a shame becuase the sheetmetal from the cars shows little rust. One was a zg model. I'm finding there are quite a few small variations in jdm parts over the years. Just like our series 1 and 2. Use what you got and build em fast frankensteins. its going to be a while before i can clean this stuff up and sell it. 6 months or more. This am radio is a strange variation. Its not signal seek like series 1 and the antenna switch is blocked off. - HLS30-00452 on Ebay - NEEDS WORK!
