  2. Is that a factory nissan seal or aftermarket? I have never had this problem myself but others have commented on the problem. This is from another website. "If the mating surface on the crank is grooved, you can adjust the depth of the new seal. Instead of bottoming out the seal where it rubs on the grooves, it can be positioned slightly rearward so that it seals on a fresh ungrooved area of the crank. As long as it is square to the crank and inserted into the block far enough, it will still seal."

not ebay but yahoo japan auctions. I bought a set of euro spec tail lights for a 280z for 148$. shipping was only 18 more to my mother in laws house in osaka. It would have cost another 90 to ship to the usa so we will put these in the suitcase next spring when we go to japan. i'm thinking this was not a good deal and was thinking of getting other parts to sell in the usa to offset these new toys. I know the euro spec 240 tail lights can sell for over $500 bucks for a good set but am not sure what these usually cost in the usa. i was bidding on a brand new right side headlight cover but was outbid. I should have used the buy it now for $320 edit: just found them on msa's website. $140 each for new reproductions so i got mine half price and used. fair but not a screaming deal
  5. Your return on investment is probably much Better than stocks or real estate. I've got a line on a set of these tail lites But for a 280z. Think they're worth buying?

Yes,sent a series 1 radio to Blackpool, Lancashire. i saw in one of your pictures that you didn't have a radio in your car. since that was an arizona car im betting you're finding lots of sand inside the car. was there much rust in the underside of the frame rails?
  7. i would love to see a picture of that old guys garage with 30+ zcars in it. sound advice given here to not tear the car all apart at once. i would bet that old red paint might buff out to look presentable from 10 ft. Get used to the car beforehand and see if you like the car. you might decide that zcars are too primitive or too much maintenance for you. btw: i love those rear fender flares.
  8. if there is a key code on the inside of the glove box you can take that code to an old fashioned locksmith and have him make keys from the code. i've also had locksmiths make keys that fit your lock buy putting in a key blank and turning the key so that the tumblers make slight impressions on the blank key. they then file those areas down and keep at it until the key opens the lock. one guy took about 10 minutes and he had a good key. this technique is called key impressioning http://www.gregmiller.net/locks/impress.html

Looks like the previous owner got the hi-centered and pushed in the floor pans or placed on a lift and lift points pushed up the floor pan. Are you the gent that bought the 70 240z radio from me on ebay?

Too crappy for a reproduction but some of the data can be used by anyone replicating their own. This 77 should be the same as the 78 just a higher price for 78. The option price for the zap stuff is interesting. A whopping 259 bucks...

Did you ever fix the bearing problem? What brand of bearings are you using?

I'm wondering how some of these repairs look 6 years down the road. I've used this sem repair system before on rubber bumpers and have had some bubbling problems due to lack of adhesion around the edges where it's feathered and very thin. fiberglass over the whole top of the dash seems to me to be the most durable. but... gawd that must stink up the car inside for a really long time. What's the verdict? anyone around that made their repair 6 yrs ago?
  14. it would be way cheaper to get a another one than try to repair that. your old one probably needed a rebuild anyways. worn out ones have been known to seperate and fly off. sometimes into the radiator. since you're rebuilding and plan to keep the car a long time why not get a good used core and send it in to these guys http://www.damperdoctor.com/ i've heard good things about them and their rebuild process.
  15. On ebay user azariar has "modified" a wiper motor that he says is 20% faster. I'm curious as to what he has done to this motor to make it go faster. Up for bid is a Genuine Datsun Nissan Factory OEM 280Z Windshield Wiper Motor. It is for 1975 through 1978 model year Z Cars. Many people have been asking for a faster Windshield Wiper Motor. We have been able to achieve that goal after 1 1/2 years of development and testing. Our shop has specially modified this motor for faster wiper operation. This Wiper Motor is more than 20% faster than a stock factory wiper motor. Finally enjoy better, safer vision in those heavy rains. It has the ROUND 6 Connector Plug. Wiper Motor Includes a NEW Firewall Grommet for the Wiring. NEW Shaft Nut, and New Shaft Lockwasher. Yellow Zinc Finish is in Stunning Condition. Switches have been Cleaned and Polished. Gear box has been Cleaned and Freshly Lubricated. Entire motor has been Disassembled, Cleaned, Inspected, Serviced, and Assembled. Wiper Motor has been Thoroughly Tested. Works perfect. Very quiet. Wiring and Wire Sheath in Perfect Condition. Entire Wiper Motor is Super Clean. Wiper Motor has had VERY LITTLE USE. Bid with Complete Confidence. Winning bidder is responsible for determining proper application. We can repair your wiper motor. Recent email from clients about our wiper motors - "Thanks for the motor I purchased on E-bay. It works great, and the instructions were very helpful. The motor I got from you makes the wipers work better than at anytime in the last 27 years I have owned the car." "I installed the wiper motor the other day and field tested it last night in a pretty heavy rain. My wipers have never moved so fast. I was really impressed." Recent client feedback about our wiper motors - "Excellent, as Advertised, AAA+++," "Works great, very fast motor," "A+ as advertised and really fast shipping".
  16. look at that art inside the garage. looks like a 1972 flashback. There has got to be a yellow happy face lurking somewhere in there too. That car could be worth around 20k to the right buyer. If you buy it for under that, you need to give your wife a commission.
  17. Are you looking for a daily driver or an investment/garage queen eye candy car? For the money, right now current prices, you're probably at the top of value range on this orange one. If you drive it, the daily wear and tear will hurt the value. How about a middle of the road car like this nice 71 240 for $9500? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971-Datsun-240Z-/230850489681?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item35bfc2ed51 unrestored but yet nice and if you're looking for long term investment value i think the 240 has the most value. Unrestored means no silly putty or bondo covering something bad. I'de rather buy something that has old paint so that you can see what you're getting. My favorite quote "As you aware if you are looking at this car, these cars rust if you spit on the ground beside"

From what i've read on this subject, the 240 blower motor is weak compared to the later years blower motor. I just put one in my 78 280z last weekend. Mine is from a 90 civic. I had to use a grinder to make the heater blower housing bigger because the fan squirrel cage is bigger than the datsun cage. Sounds like your 240z swap didn't need the grinder? Anyways, my fan motor was making an occasional squealing noise so i pulled the cover off the motor and found 34 years of copper dust inside. The brushes must be made of rock because they looked like new but the armature had a deep divot where the brushes rode. All the copper dust was from the armature wear. That can't be good for current draw. I bet this thing was drawing a ton of amps to run. For my 280 swap i noticed a more smooth souding fan and a noticable increase in air coming out. i'm not sure what to do about the little hose hole that used to feed air to cool the motor. should that be closed up to prevent crap from getting into the motor? i've ran across other threads on this motor swap but don't recall this issue.
  19. is that a new record?
  20. wow, how long did it take to paint with that small gun?

i've had good luck cutting them from the inside of the car. Sounds like someone may have added adhesive because the ones ive done only had glue around the corners.
  22. Datsun parts hoarders get a better return on their money than any 401k investment out there. I plugged the numbers into a return on investment calculator and you got 294% return over the 16 years you've owned the dealer bought covers.

Its hard to tell from the picture if there was any oil inside the clutch, and if there was oil in it, was it thick? No oil or too thin oil and it won't work very well regardless how it looks inside. They riveted the halves together? I've never seen a factory datsun clutch thats rivited. There is no way to put it back together unless you put threads in one half with a tap but thats too much trouble. I'de just get a used factory datsun clutch off someone and add a heavier oil to it. You have another early 260z without a fan clutch? can you swap out the fan that uses no clutch? That should tell you if it was the clutch causing the overheating. The alternator charging is another issue. One possiblility is the fan belt is too loose. If you can turn the alternator pulley with your hand, its too loose. http://www.hammondsplains.com/newtechtips/cooling/index.htm

Does anyone happen to know if msa or anyone else is thinking about or has done a reproduction of this series 1 faceplate or any s30 radio faceplate? It would seem to me that there would be a big market for these since the originals are really prone to breaking at the bottom screw holes. I know they've made repro's in the past because i found this link to the nissan restore program a few years back. http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/datsun-240z-up-to-7-73-radio-face-plate-reproduction-2

Sounds like the fan clutch is bad. At idle the fan is not pulling enough air into the radiator.
