  1. Make sure that connectors on the starter, small wire. I've run speaker wire from my battery straight to the fuel pump to test it, it's got a positive and a negative post.

I think it's a CA thing, not positive though, mine doesn't have it.

I took my key out when I was fooling with my combo switch, didn't want any surprises. You can turn your lights on since it wouldn't hurt anything but when you put 12 volts on that solder spot it's going to energize the dash lights regardless of anything else, you're bypassing the rocker function of the combo switch. You might start a new thread about help with the combo switch. SteveJ is very electrical minded.

Make sure your dimmer knob is turned fully clockwise. Mine is next to the trip reset knob, below the farthest left round dash vent. I got sparks too but also lights. Mine made a contact spark, like hooking jumper cables to the battery. You're putting 12 volts straight on the circuit so I'm thinking your dimmer is turned the wrong way.
  6. Wouldn't the bottom of the instrument panel be where the transmission bolts up to the engine? Climb under there and tighten some bolts maybe?
  7. Does it go away when you push in the clutch pedal while idling?
  8. That's a good point. Sound would be the easiest way to tell. With a new one, on start up it's a lot louder for the first few minutes. The fan noise definitely gets quieter after it warms up.
  9. I try to get a part number of what I want, usually from rockauto.com, then just google.com it. If you have an Advanced Auto, go to retailmenot.com and use the coupon codes to buy online then go to the store and pick it up. When I rebuilt mine they had a code for $10 off every $25 you spent. Unbelievable! Counter guys said they're trying to build up their on-line business. At MSA tell them your Member ID # from this forum and get 10% off.
  10. Here's something really helpful. It's explained simply and has plenty of up close pictures. Him or one of his club members has done just about everything to a 1977 280Z. Tech Tips Hell I forgot to mention, nice car.
  11. Silicone fluid, not oil. Today's lesson!
  12. When the fan clutch goes bad it spins more, by hand. I put a new one in my'72 and spinning by hand it won't even make a complete rotation cold. They have oil in them and when it's hotter it frees the fan up. I know that sounds backwards or at least to me, but it's not. Before starting it for the day it should only go around once if that much. A more dangerous way to test them is trying to stop it while the motor is running, if you can it needs to be replaced. I've read using a piece of wood like a broom handle against the aluminium hub is how you do it, not me though! Mine was less than $20 at Advanced Auto.

If the lines are bad, my Dad cleaned some in an old truck he had by blowing a heavy fishing line through the line with a compressor. Then tied a .22 caliber wire gun cleaner tip and pulled it through. He had to do it a few times because of the rust but it must have worked, he drove it for years. I'd be scared of getting it stuck myself but you don't necessarily have to use the gun cleaner, maybe something smaller?

I will buy a pin wheel at the Dollar Store and show you all how much air it's pulling at idle. I am amazed. Plus I have an extra opening now as big as a baseball to let air in the engine bay.
  15. Are the driving lights wired on the turn signals power or fuse. Could you disconnect the driving light power and see if you get your turn signals back? Just guessing.
  16. I've got that same leveler and it scared the crap out of me when it started snapping like that. I ground the paint off the bottom edge and greased that roller that contacts that same edge. Good to hear all went well. No blue fingernails I hope.

You'd never laid eyes on it and drove for 28 hours? That's nerves of steel! And a good car too. Glad to have you at Classic Zs.

I can't remember where I bought it, I have the regular chain stores close by. But I could've got it from amazon.com or rockauto.com. https://www.google.com/search?q=STANDARD+MOTOR+PRODUCTS+PS153&rlz=1C1BOFA_enUS494US494&oq=STANDARD+MOTOR+PRODUCTS+PS153&aqs=chrome..69i57&sourceid=chrome&espv=210&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8 http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=44198

I found a good hose at a junkyard. But do I need it? I put some screening wire around the opening and the clamp to keep the squirrels out. I'm hoping to gain at least 20Hp like all the K&N people claim. :stupid:

I found the one I had that read low all the time. I read something about the newer style being more accurate so I bought one. For me, it worked. FAIW, which ain't much!

I remember there is a plug that I had to unplug to get the combo switch out of the car, so yes you'll need to plug that one back up. I used a 12 volt test light to jump power from the white/red to the green/white and my dash lit up. The kind with a needle-like point on 1 end and an alligator clip on the other works for a jumper. If you take the 2 part cover off behind the steering wheel you should be able to find the plug that runs to that combo switch. It's on the bottom of the steering column and will have those wire colors. If your seat belt light comes on I'd think it's the combo switch instead of blown bulbs. See if your side marker lights and tag light are working, there all tied into that confounded combo switch. Best of luck! 1 more thing, there is a fuse for the switch's power. I believe it's the 4th from the top on the right side of the fuse block. Probably says park lights/headlights or similar on the fuse box cover.
  24. Does anybody have any opinions on these? Tokico HPK Kit NISSAN 280Z. I'm thinking about buying some for my '77 and would like to hear from someone that has them. Thanks for any replies.
  25. Here's what I'm looking at, Tokico HPK Kit NISSAN 280Z. Haven't read that many reviews from Z owners yet. I thought I might start a thread and ask though.
