fuel pump 78 280z
You may have already seen this but here's something to read over, Z Car Tech Tips Fram G3 Filter Installation. The hoses are a little big but they do tighten up as cesar said. They also have a G2 filter that's smaller and works better on a 240Z but the G3 for my 280. Get some needle nosed vise grips and put small section of hoses over the "teeth" of the pliers so you won't damage the hose coming out of the tank, that'll hold the fuel back while you install it. Get both the filters at Walmart and use the one you like, they're only $3 or $4 each. And like Eurodat says the dampener keeps the fuel pressure steady, no pulses. Walmart also has the can looking fuel filter in the engine bay for $10. That fuel injection cleaner probably loosened up some varnish type sludge in the tank, I would run the pump after putting in the G3 to clear anything out by attaching a 4 foot piece of hose from outbound on the pump to a gas can or something. Then blow the fuel line from the pump up to the metal fuel filter with compressed air, put a towel over the end in the engine bay to catch the gas and stuff. Oh yeah, there's a small cone shaped filter inside the inlet port of your original fuel pump. Where the hose from the tank goes on the pump. Take that loose and get some tweezers and pull it out, clean with whatever but be damn careful because they're fragile little things. You'll get it figured out.

Discount Tire question
Our Government should use Discount Tire as a role model, top notch company with a great online process. I couldn't get a salesperson to match the online rebates so I'll cross my fingers GE Capital has made changes now that the economy is so slow.

Greasing the Rack and Pinion on a 76
I used a 12" pipe wrench and a steel wood chisel for the big screwdriver but mine was on a work bench with a vise. And I do remember the old grease was dried out inside that housing, I dug it out the best I could. Zed Head has a good idea with the mirror.

Greasing the Rack and Pinion on a 76
That's what I did on my '77, no grease fittings either. I used a wooden paint stirrer to pack it down in the "teeth" and turned back and fourth. I thought I had found a hole for a zerk fitting but it was a plastic plug thing I never figured out.

fuel pump 78 280z
Try running the pump into a gas can, you could have debris all the way up to the fuel filter. If you do end up replacing it then yes you should run it through the fuel dampener.

Rim research for my 1978 280Z
What size wheel and tire did you go with? I got approved for their 6 months same as cash and the $50 rebate ends this month so I'm about to get a set. I think Mr. Arnett has a 16x7 with 205/55s without any rubbing and was curious if that might be what you had? They look really good. Thanks

AAR hose re-routing
Yeah they call me a "Feeder" when I tell somebody the spark plug gap instead of download this and download that and read until your eyes bleed. I thought that was the whole reason for a forum, support and interaction amongst people with the same interest. I like helping people, whether it's helping someone change a tire on the side of a busy street or push a broken down car out of the intersection, or God forbid, telling somebody .039-.043 gap size.

2200 rpm at idle
Have you tried to adjust it? It has a nut on the bottom for adjustment, you'll have to take the clipped on metal cover off first. I can't remember which way I turned mine to get it right though :stupid:.
