  1. Thanks for the replies. I went ahead and set it at 15 BTDC and when I was turning the distributor I could hear the difference in the motor, it kind of quietened itself and seemed smoother?, as always I had a wrench in one hand and a beer in the other one so going out to test the car wasn't in my plans but....I couldn't stand it! With 87 octane already in there I went out to a Connector Highway, nice and flat and about 5 miles long. After fiddling with the potentiometer and scanning for the cops I turned around and gave it a romp. When the wipers lifted off the windshield I lifted off the pedal, looked down and saw a little north of 115 MPH and the temp gauge was in the "E", much cooler than usual. Couldn't believe how quick it got to that speed. Leon I'd love to give somebody a $100 for a Dyno run but those aren't too common in my neck of the woods. Anyway I've got something to play with until the weather cools off. Thanks again for your replies
  2. It can be done. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/engine-drivetrain-s30/49184-1978-280z-2-2-cylinder-head-removal.html read post #46
  3. Anybody with this fuel tweak found a timing degree that is better than 10 BTDC? I'm thinking of trying 15 but I don't really know what "Pinging" is. I guess it's a noise that's noticeable? Thanks for any advice.
  4. Thank You. I've got the F54 turbo block with dished pistons & an E31 head with hopes of running pump gas.
  5. Same thing with mine!
  6. Lovely motors to look at aren't they, beneficial too.

Did it ever work right, before the bypassing? Maybe get a new ignition switch, both of my cars have newer ones. But it does sound like your starter teeth and flywheel teeth aren't mating just right. I just compared ZX starters to Z's and their part numbers are different and a lot more $$.

If I need to check the total advance, 3,000 RPM, should I reconnect the vacuum advance hose?
  9. I had that same question when I did mine. The stud kit that came with my header had normal hex nuts without any locking washers. I felt that they would back off so I went to my local Nissan dealer and got what he called "conical nuts" or just slightly out of round. If they spin on really easy I wouldn't use them, the out of round will not finger tighten easily you have to wrench them down, that's what keeps them from backing off. I went bigger also, some of the holes were wallowed out pretty bad on the head.
  10. I don't think you can replace the roof on these cars, I do not know that for sure but I do know that the roof has structural function. Back in my college days a buddy of mine wanted to make a targa top out of his and the car started "folding up" when he cut the roof out. He had to have angle iron welded on the bottom for support and it took 2" off his ride height, he'd get stuck on speed bumps. Yor car has the dealer installed options my '77 has, side trim and the pin-stripe. I would bet that sunroof was a dealer add on too, you might have to learn to like it. I found a few with your wheels so they could be dealer installed. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/wheels-tires-brakes-s30/23378-280z-factory-alloy-wheels-value-feeler.html Read down to #18, it's an old post but your wheels are worth some $$, supposedly.
  11. Wow! Maybe I'll put these on my Camry.
  12. A car with a known history behind it would sell quick right here. I'm with Wade, stay away from ebay & craigslist and show it to the masses on this forum. We gossip more than a beauty shop full of women.
  13. About 13K on that hood.
  14. If you decide to go with MSA, great company!!, use your classiczcars.com Member ID, 17476 for a club discount. I can't remember if it ask for that specifically or like a coupon code. It's not much but it'll offset their shipping charges a little and every little bit helps spend on something better you want.
  15. Something else people do to theses old cars to prevent sediment/rust from entering the fuel pump. They're cheap and it takes about 10 minutes. Z Car Tech Tips Fram G3 Filter Installation Lots of good info on there Tech Tips
  16. Call your local Nissan dealer with this part number, they might can get them or buy them off e-bay. 240Z 260z 280z Fusible Link Covers Two Genuine Nissan | eBay

  18. When I saw that the engine bay wasn't the same color as the car.
  19. At first I thought it looked to be a re-paint, but it looks now like the engine has been out and the engine bay has been sprayed with something like undercoating maybe? Find your color here 70-78 Datsun Z Paint Code Gallery Then look for a silver sticker in front of the radiator for the color number.
  20. I've always thought that to be a "mechanical wives tell" myself. Hasn't happened to me but I write what's on my mind.
  21. I had a thought...look out! What about the old hot start problem? Would the OE hardline hold heat too much? Just asking because you guys live in completely different heat zones. Down here in the Deep South, mine is cool to the touch while flowing fuel and heats up very little on shut down. i know I won't win this but just thinking out loud. Cheers!!
  22. It looks a lot easier, of course. He's got a gift for figuring stuff out.
  23. My whole '77 was an experiment for me but not fun, high anxiety until I put 500 miles on it, then super fun!
  24. That's too easy! How'd you mount your FPR?
  25. Sucky brakes = front end crash?
