z on ebay what do you think
Hello all, Check out the 280 on debay for sale. It's the first one on the list. Silver, automatic, supposedly pristine. It may not sell so quick because it's not a stick but it looks to be a sweet ride. By the way for all the people who responded to my help me problem regarding the starting problems read the sellers comment about the loose battery cables. Zedrally. zmefly in particular one of you guys suggested that might be my problem when I mentioned that the terminals could be pulled off by hand. Tell me what you think of this vehicle. Go up into the chat room later or email me. Burt cardogman:stupid:

starting the 240
Thank you gentleman for suggesting my problem with the starting. I enjoyed the chat line last night where did you guys go? Daniel I'll check the glove box light. By the way my chat room friends I was just warming up you didn't give me achance to spew my right wing conservative republican view points and any of my other maniacal and controversial thought processes. I know what your thinking is it possible to live on Long Island and be anything other then a liberal democrat. TRY ME. While we are at it when are we going into Iraq take all there Z cars and then take out Hussein and his henchman including Bin Laden. I kinda have gotten a little off the track. Thanks again for the help and keep in touch. Burt

starting the 240
No mike it hasn't behaved like this before however I've only had the car for two months. The car was sitting in a mans garage in Florida for about oh 30 years with a car cover on it. He bought the car when he was 38 years old, drove it for two years put 14,000 miles on it and then quietly put it away in his garage. He drove it about 4 miles a month to keep the seals from drying out. When I bought it it was shipped from Florida in an inside carrier. He's 69 years old now. Bought it new in 71 from dealer. When I started the car off the carrier and drove it about 2 miles and put the heat on, the radiator blew up with the hreater core and heater control valve. The water pump and fuel pump failed, the car was exploding out the tail pipe, and a miriad of other problems. Got them taken care of. When I first saw the car in Florida the battery was dead so he installed a new Interstate battery a very good brand. The tune up with all the other stuff has been done. Today I drove it for about a half an hour after I got it started. I then put it in the garage and disconnected the negative terminal. Just a little while ago about 4 hours later I started the car up and it started like I use to when I was about 18 years old if you know what I mean. I got this car because I was in love with my first one in 1973. I know it's kind of a hobby for most of us but this is starting to kinda wizz me off. New Yorkers on the whole don't have any patience anyway. But this car is starting to become a money pit. The car cost me $18,000. It's just about brand new. When I get a camera I'll post pictures. Original paint looks like it just left the showroom. A remarkable almost 10 point car original. Maybe one of very few in the USA. But if I continue to have trouble starting it it will look good only to anybody who would like to come and hang out in my garage. Look forward to hearing back from you. Burt

Zedrally and Zmefly The car is not turning over strongly and then click click. It's getting enough fuel I think. The clock only draws 5 amps someone told me that that's enogh to drain the battery if not started for a few days. I don't agree with that. Maybe the alternator bit that's not making any noise. Maybe the capacitor like mike said. If only I knew what and where the capicitor is. I am a functioning illiterate when it comes to automobile mechanics. I may have to take a course there is nobody on Long Island that seems to know anything about 240zs. Although this seems to me to basic that can occur to any vehicle. Your responses are gratefully appreciated keep em comin. By the way I don't know where you guys are but here in New York it's turning into utah snowing every other day. I got to get out of here.

Thanks mike I'll check it out really appreciate it. Why then when I hooked up the new battery booster did the car turn over like a bandit on viagra. Your thoughts? Burt

starting the 240
Cetainly, The car doesn't start well. The battery is new, the distributor cap, points, rotor, fuel pump, plugs, points, ignition wires are all new . Complete major tune up done. Carbs adjusted and cleaned. If I let the car sit for more then two days it starts sometimes on the third try very slowly and this morning not at all. Just clicking and then eventually nothing. Installed new clock the other day mechanic may have wired it wrong because it still doesn't work. May have just bought a bad clock. Maybe the clock is draining battery a liitle more then 5 amps but doubtful thats the problem. I know the choke might need small adjustment because I have to pull it back all the way. When I boosted the battery the car started like a champ first time the key turned and real quick. Thats my situation what do you think. Regards Burt cardogman1

Daniel, What do you mean hit the key. Do you have an electric fuel pump, that might help starting. I have a died in the wool plain and original 240. Cold is like about 25 degrees in the garage. The battery went dead it seams after about 3 days. New battery too. Starting to think it might be the alternator or something. Went out and bought one of those battery starters and it started up right up. Any ideas gratefully appreciated Burt

starting the 240
Hello everbody, Does anybody have any ideas to improve the starting of the 240z. It's very cold in New York and even though the car starts it takes about two or three trys and thats with a complete major tune up with new plugs, points, rotor, fuel filter, coil, distributor cap.Carbs are adjusted. I know these cars were always alittle difficult. The battery is new and the starter and alternator are fine. Would an electronic ignition help. The car is garaged but even in the garage unless I put the heater on it can be a pain in the neck. Let me know if you have had the same problem and if there is a fix. Thanks Burt Cardogman1 71 240z

struts, springs and wheels
xyz I switched out the bushings but did not use polyethylene used stock standard rubber. Don't believe poly should be used. We use it in the business that I'm in that is hip joints and knee joints and I think it's a gimmic. In a car there will for sure be premature wear and depending on the resin, cracking. There could be catastrophic failure of poly bushings that I believe could cause an accident. Rubber is still better it fails slowly. Burt

struts, springs and wheels
Hello everyone Been away to New Orleans for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Convention. Very interesting town, great food lots of sin. Anyway, I'm thinking of changing the struts and maybe the springs on my 240 any recommendations for a more bounce free stable ride. Also I'd like to get the hubcaps off the car and buy nice 14x6 wheels. I'm thinking of Panasports any other suggestions. Please get back Thanks Burt cardogman1

idle speed
Thank You Mr. Bambikiller for the feedback and I'll get back to you when I get it carl. Thank you Mr. 2manyZs Thats good advice . The car was recently tuned with everything done and it does as you know have very low mileage. I distinctively think that none of these cars ever idled comfortably at 650 and based on my informal poll I think I'll raise the idle to at least 800-900 it's just smoother and the shifting won't be such a drag on the clutch. Be well Burt the cardogman

idle speed
I'd like to get some opinions from as many as possible regarding idle rpms. All of you Z enthusiasts out there may have a slightly different theory on correct idle rpms specifically related to the 240 model years. As we all know the manufacturer recomended 650rpms was the the proper setting for idle speed. The manual I believe noted 650 along with the original sticker on the air filter housing. If I'm not mistaken the sticker on the inside of the hood said 750 and about everyone I speak with sets there idle 800-900 to alleviate the "bounce" of the engine at idle. Can I get your thoughts on this and does a higher idle make the car run hotter, use more fuel or is there any downside to setting the idle higher. Not the high idle just standard idle rpms. Look forwared to hearing your opinions. Burt cardogman1
