  1. Ok so I finally got working on my 73' 240. When I picked this car up the exhaust manifold, intake and carbs were off the car. After noticing that the previous owner snapped a stud off going to the exhaust manifold, I drilled that out and put a new stud in there, finally got everything that come with the car together and tired to fired it up no fuel. I found that the mechanical pump was not working so I had a spare 5-7 psi electric pump handy and hooked that up and bam fired up and then out of know where the throttle was stuck wide open. I quickly shut it down and then omg a fire!!! I have never ran so fast in my life to get the fire out. So I may have jumped the gun (nooby move I know) everything is fine thank god!! Anyway I am very new to the su carbs and have no idea what I am dealing with here. I am reading a lot and I am mechanically inclined I just have not dealt with carbs before. So if you guys could look at this photo and let me know what carbs I have and if everything looks somewhat complete that would be great. Sorry for being such a novice but everyone learns at some point. I'm just glad the fire was small cause I do not want that to happen ever again. Also it seemed like it was getting way to much fuel cause I am getting fuel coming out of the breather hose on the carb which is what caught on fire.

update: Tested all tests in the EF section. pin 6 to 8 .2 with no sound on my meter, 7 to 8 .4 no sound, 8 to 9 .2 no sound, 10 to 20 .1 sound, 13 to ground .5 no sound, 20 to ground .2 no sound, 34 to ground .2 no sound, 5 to ground (sound), 16 to ground (sound), 34 to ground (sound) pin 1 to ground 11.4 volts (battery is getting a little low) pin 10 to ground 11.4v, pin 14, 15, 30, 31, 32, and 33 to ground 11.4 volts, also - ingnition coil to pin 1 has sound/continuity. With all that I am thinking my ecu is the culprit, I am going to take it out and look at it to see if it can be repaired, I read this http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?37534-76-no-start-problem&highlight=fuel+injectors and seems to be pretty similar so I am thinking maybe a new ecu is in order.

Also when I inspected the ecu I noticed someone spliced into the ecu plug. There are 2 wires that are coming out of the end of the plug that do not connect to anything one is coming from pin 11 and the other pin 26. Their spliced correctly right to the pins yet on the other end both are female ends and I don't see any other wires under the dash that would connect to the any chance these would be causing the issue

Ok finally got working on the 280 again and it looks like I'm not getting any power to the injectors, the light bulb trick does not flash took 2 injectors out and watched for fuel spray and did not get anything. Kinda stumped cause it looks like the wires run into the ecu. Is there anything else I should be checking for, grounds... Split wires ect

ok great I'll try that I was wondering how to test that cause when it was running I couldn't hear the pump over the motor and I was all alone. Thanks for the tip
  9. Got the 280 to fire up but stalls within a few seconds. Installed a new fuel pump but was not getting any gas so I had to take the gas tank down main line is plugged up so I was not getting any gas. Stuck the hose from the pump into a gas can and primed the pump and the filter and bam fired right up which was sure nice to hear her run for those few seconds. Now I have to see why it stalls right after start up. I checked the airflow sensor and held the flap open thinking maybe the fuel pump is shutting off after I release the key when it starts but that didn't make any difference.

Hey there... Well just recently purchased two Z's a 73' 240 and a 76' 280 (which has been sitting since 97' from what I could tell.) I drained the gas, oil, and coolant then turned the motor over by hand and everything rotated just fine. I Installed a new battery, fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs and fluids. Turned the car over but would not start so I checked the fuel and was getting no fuel due to the gas tank plugged up. I dropped the gas tank and will be cleaning that out but for now I started it up using a gas can. I primed the pump and the fuel filter and it fired right up then stalled with in a couple of seconds. tried it a couple more times and it does the same thing then eventually gets to much gas and will not start till I let it sit a few. I tried giving it a little gas when it would start and it made it stall even faster which i'm thinking is giving it to much fuel..... I was going to clean the injectors but the weather here got kinda crappy out so I had to stop working for the night. Any other advise on what to check for with this issue. I also checked the airflow sensor and held the flap open with no luck thinking maybe the fuel pump was shutting off after the car was running. I must say it was nice to hear her run for those few seconds
  11. Well a little update. Got back home and started working on the 76' 280. The guy I bought it from has not touched the car for a few years and same with the other owner previously before him. Looks like the last time it was down the road was in 1997. So I Drained the fuel tank, oil, and coolant. Took the valve cover off and spun the engine by hand, spins nice and all valves open and close. Got a new battery and fluids. It turns over nice but does not start so there is def. Hope for this z seeing the road again. Now just gotta check the fuel pump, filter, lines, if everything there checks out then to the sparks. I'm reading all about the fuel pumps and such but have not run into how to really test the pump. It's just myself working on this so I don't have anyone listening to the pump. Any advise would be great. I'll be reading more tonight.
  12. Thanks guys yeah much simpler indeed and as far as what's going to happen in not sure if I wanna rebuild the original motor it do a hybrid v8 conv. Still tossing the idea around and reading. As far as the body goes kinda going for a more sports look yet sleek nothing outrageous just nice and clean. First things first got to get it running then slowly work on the body until I get more room in the shop or the garage. The orange 280 ill try and get that one running and then sell it. If not then ill either parting it out or selling it as a project car.
  13. Well Merry Christmas to me after a 12 hour round trip finely picked up a 73' 240z and a 76' 280z. I'm not new to the z but am new to the 240 and 280's. I currently have a 1990 300zx na which I am in the process of restoring in class. Next will be the 240z. I'm sure ill have plenty of questions since I'm not to familiar with the straight 6 so its gonna be a fun learning experience. I'm finally going back to school for auto body thank god cause I love it I have always been into cars ever since I was able to walk Well I have a lot of reading and work to do once back from my Christmas Vac. Here are a few pics of the cars and don't worry more to come as I slowly work on her.
