Hey guys, Am currently putting the Z back together as it needs to be moved again. Its been sitting for almost 3 years in the garage. Upon leaving, I didnt prep it for storage as I didnt plan on being away for so long.... Yep poor form. Anyhow, I read up on post storage procedures, and came to turing the engine over by hand. When I have no spark plugs in, it turns over just fine, using the socket wrench. When I put the plugs back in, I am getting major resistance at certain intervals/spots! It doesnt feel like a mechanical/hard resistance as it gradually gets tighter throughout the rotation, then easier again. These point/s of resistance have also prooven too much for the starter.!! Yes smoke from starter solenoid is bad juju. Took out plugs again, still turns freely when cranked by hand, cam is turning good, etc. There is plenty of oil as I oil preped each cylinder and let sit before cranking. Only thought is a different set of spark plugs??? Any ideas >? cam

hey lttleren, I have pulled the engine a couple of times, much easier as a whole unit (eng and trans). You'd also want to remove the radiator, and hood, to prevent any damage. It is also much easier to work on the motor when it is out of the car, on a stand. No need to remove valve cover for removal either. I tended to remove the basics, lines, wires, hoses) leaving the manifolds on and just disconnect the exhaust altogether to prevent any snagging. Also dont forget your grounding straps~! There are some pics in my gallery of my last one. Have fun with it. cam
  4. Hey texas, I'm rebuilding/refreshing an L28 at the moment. Brand new head, rings etc. Can't stress enough, as others will, to keeping things Clean, and In Order! (parts, tools, notes, etc). The more order you have goin on with the engine build, the better. Just a tip.

hey, I can vouch for the guy in sonoma. His name is Dan and he is very helpful and a wealth of knowledge. Great guy to deal with. I went out last week and bought an L28, 5sp box and a freshly rebuilt head, to build up and put in my cali 260 (couldnt resist a package). He does have a wealth of parts also. Yes I did drool. Doors, fenders, hoods, heads, badges, brake lights, undented bumpers! etc. Practically anything you could want. Bit of a hike from where I stay , but well worth it.

  7. hey, I am thinking the gearbox in the car makes a fair amount of difference with fuel economy? Anyone know the difference between the auto vs stick ? My 260 4spd isnt much chop on the hwy. Sits on about 4k doing about 70/80mph. havent worked out any mpg figures, but cant be good. ha. So yeah need to get ahold of 5spd me thinks......
  8. hey, glad yas liked the article. I finnished the carb conversion on the cali car and had a drive of her today. Much much better than the flat tops, in terms of driveability, performance marginal, hopefully some tuning she'll get better. Also with the oil issue, I heard that auto trans fluid, will work good too.

ay, just finnished converting my 260 to round tops, still need some stuff, but I found this which gives a real good feel for the carb, maybe should go in tech articles. Not sure if its already here, but thought it might help anyone messing with the carbs. http://www.zparts.com/zptech/articles/mal_land/ml_sucarb2/images4/SUcarb_111601d.htm
  10. hey, My first was a '78 datsun skyline (Same running gear and motor as the Z). I learnt a of a lot about cars with that one and got it running really good as a daily driver throught the last year of high school. Depends what floats your boat. If you want to get from point A to point B in a slush box, thats cool. If you want learn a heap about cars, get a real buzz out of driving it, and grin like an idiot, get the z. probs do occour, but makes it all the more worthwile. Have driven and owned a heap of cars, jags, hondas, alfa's, fords, toyotas, etc. Would take a z any day over any of em. any day! good luck
  11. ay, I have a blue '74 260z. Really dont want to sell it but can't put the time in to it at the moment, and dont have room. Regretful, very. I would rather a z enthusiast get it. Here are the details of my 3rd Z. Anyone looking to 'refresh' a z car, this is the one. Trust me! Body: Very original/stock car. (which is why I bought it). Incrediably straight body! Never crashed. People would kill for this body back home. Only minimal rust in passenger door. No where else, NO HOLES IN FLOOR either! Front bumper is slightly bent, but true testiment to the california climate. Engine: Original motor (l26), 4spd (NO grinding), drives and rev's good. All gauges work. Good oil pressure, no overheating, etc. This car has been very well taken care of. I have a glove box full of reciepts for it, orginal handbook, original spare tyre, etc. The car has also just been serviced. Oil change, new plugs, leads, rotor, air filter, dizzy cap, new battery, new valve cover gasket, etc. Can you believe all this? Why would any Z lover sell it? Forced sale really. What needs to be fixed? She'll need some new u joints in the back. She will need some seatbelts as well as they are a bit ripped. Dash is cracked, Needs carpets in the front, Original (dreaded) flat top carbs have vacum leaks me thinks, exhaust/emissions system has a hole in it. Paint is somewhat faded. VERY minnor things in Z land!! Many $$$ spent already. HLS something something. INTERESTED? I would be too. Working on uploading pics. Car is located near oakland, CA. Best price/right person more so will get it. grnskyline@juno.com

hey zx260, I bought a 260z 2 seater with a busted motor, pulled it out and put in the 280z motor, I'm not a qualified mechanic, engineer, nothin, but did it all myself. I enjoyed doing the swap alot and didnt have any real dramas. I reckon DIY is the way too go as you'll learn alot more. There are some pics in my gallery if you want to look. James: livin in California at the moment. Plenty of 280 turbos! not to mention rust free Z's! cam

  15. hey, RB30 is an OHC 3lr 6c that were put in late 80's skylines and holden's (GMC) sedans and wagons. Pretty potent with a manual, even more with a stock turbo. Around 9psi I think. Very popular motor here in Aus. My friend has one he is willing to sell. If I had any mula I would buy it and whack it in. Minus the engineering. check this blokes site for some good shots http://www.users.bigpond.com/allanreynolds/twinvl/thenewtwinvl.html cam (rb power, only an infinite amount of dollars away)

hi guys. Just thought I'd throw in the latest . Droped the L28 in with just the extractors, got it running. LOULD IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT!!! at 4500rpm, makes a howl that sounded FANTASTIC! Even when driving to the exhuast joint the other day everyone at the lights was givin me the eye, hehe. Take a photo people. Got a 2 1/2 system all the way through. Much more refined now and not half as rebellious. cam

ay guys after alot of fidling and one of the fattest earth wires around she starts!! very exciting! Only running the extractors at the moment so bloodly loud!!!, sounds like a beast! however not all joy... she doesnt want to rev any higher than 2ooo revs, missing pretty bad. It looses almost all revs at 2 and power with a bang/misfire and returns to ildle almost. She idles all right, little rough but dont want to rev. It has an electornic distributor (came from broken 260 motor)havent played with timing much yet but is pretty much set in the middle. any ideas? plugs? cap? cam
