Somebody go get this- 1974 260 for $200
It's worth it for the wheels alone.

Project Boondoggle (or, so I went and bought a Z!)
Mission creep certainly can end badly but just look at how focused you have been, you only got it in the spring and look what you have accomplished so far. Pulling the dash doesn't take more than an hour and you will probably never have your interior stripped this far down again. And yeah, your floors look great! Chris

Opinions on catch cans
Is your engine spitting a lot of oil from the lower breather tube?

1972 Datsun 240z steering column cover and 6 screws
Buddy, this forum is serving you up a delicious dinner at no cost and you want your steak cut up and forked into your mouth as well. Some effort is required on your part.

It's not the floors or the rails that are the problem, they are fairly straight forward, it's the doglegs and where they connect to the rear subframe. It is not an area that lends it self to patching. Pull the interior so you can see all the metal, take an old screw driver and start stabbing. If the metal is good you won't hurt anything, explore the whole car like that. Get the front fenders off and examine the hollow archs over the wheel wells, they are constructed of thin 20ga sheet and they usually rot from the inside out.

Man,.... I would start looking for another car. It's those dog legs, they are too far gone and you haven't even got the interior out yet. Your car, your labour, but I'm just saying there are better cars out there that worth putting your effort into. That kind of rust can be soul sucking. I hope I'm wrong.

1973 Rebuild
That guard is only on the passenger side to protect the filler hose, fuel pump and such, and that sure looks like mud flaps were there.

Leather door skins
Mike, I will for sure, but these are for my next, modified Z. I'm suppose to be working on the "Original" car right now and getting it ready for sale so it might be a few months before I start laying it up. Chris

How is this for unobtainium?
Does anyone know if 3D printing has come far enough yet that this piece could be 3D laser scanned and then let the software flatten it into a pattern. I would hate to wreck it.

How is this for unobtainium?
I didn't know Nissan even produced it, I went to our club's Fall swap meet and the Nissan dealership parts guy was selling it at his table. I might just hang it on the wall. All three Z's I have taken apart had serious rust on this piece. If you don't recognize it, it is the panel that the gas tank filler tube goes through. Chris

Floor Pans... Getting screwed?
Chuck, I see you haven't connected the floor pan rails to the rear subframe, is there a reason for that? I thought that was pretty standard for Z race cars. Thanks, Chris

How exciting, congrats. Get yourself a copy of Wick Humble's bible, http://www.amazon.com/How-Restore-Your-Datsun-Z-Car/dp/1931128022. There is not much he doesn't cover thoroughly. But do yourself a favor, as soon as it arrives take your brand new copy to The Office Depot/Staples and have them Shurlock the binding because it will fall apart after the first week of using it. I hope you will keep a restoration thread going here on the forum, you will not find more encouragement and knowledge about Z's then you will from these guys. Chris

Leather door skins
The leather door skins arrived today, I'm pretty impressed. Good quality leather and nicely done stitching. Can't wait to get started on them. These pics were taken seconds after opening the package where they had been folded, it has been a couple of hours now and the fold marks are disappearing. Chris

240Z Resto - 01/1970 Car
That NABCO M/C second from the left looks like the one that came on my 03/70 240Z but it had this cap on it. Now someone could have changed it over the years, I don't know, It certainly looked like it had been there for a very long time. I kept the cap, it's yours if you want it. Chris

Leather door skins
Oh I haven't forgotten them, I'll be placing an order with them soon for the diamond stitched leather tunnel and strut tower covers with charcoal stitching. I will mention the door skins when I put my order in.

My winter project: L28 swap into my 240z
blodi, that looks like a Kamaeri steel head gasket, if it is then your compression might not be as high as 10.5. The thick Kamaeri HG are often used to bring down the compression when no other way can be found to deal with ping.

floor frame rail question.
No reason that I can see, in fact I'm pretty sure I did just that then welded Baddog rails over top of the stock and then added BD's extensions so those rails tie into the rear subframe, STIFF. first pic is Charlie's stock pans and rails, second pic is BD's over top.

Beware Mr. Gasket fuel filters
I use to have one of those on a 1974 Triumph TR6 with a V8 about 15 yrs ago, one day the the pot metal threads let go, fuel pump kept on pumping and I had pools of gasoline boiling in the pockets of the Edlebrock Jr intake manifold, the engine was screaming hot and I stood there with a fire extinguisher waiting for my car to burst into flames. It never did, I had a horseshoe up my bum that day but everytime I see one of those stupid things on someones car I them that story.

Aluminum clear coat
Good to hear other people reporting positive things about these coatings. So I have had a couple of the test pieces out on the deck for the past two weeks with lots of dew and rain and some hot sun and one test piece strapped to the rad in my truck, all the aluminum pieces are doing very well, the steel rod not so good. Maybe I didn't prep the steel well enough but there is the start of rust under both the sharkhide and Glisten coatings, mind you steel is pretty reactive. I have started a new test piece of polished steel that was degreased, acid etched and cleaned multiple times before coating, I'll report back in a couple weeks. Also, neither coatings show damage from battery acid and Glisten shows no damage from gasoline, unfortunately Sharkhide completely dissolves if gas is dripped on it. However, let the gas evaporate, clean the area with soap and water and once dry apply Sharkhide again and it blends in pretty well, not perfect but most people would never notice the repair. Chris

Leather door skins
Has anyone used these or know anything about them? http://www.ebay.com/itm/BLACK-LEATHER-2X-DOOR-CARD-LEATHER-SKIN-COVER-FITS-DATSUN-240Z-260Z-280Z-/231398294528?hash=item35e069c400&vxp=mtr Considering the price of new door cards or even vinyl skins these look like a bargain.
