Fan Clutch Testing and Repair
As if you'd open the hood with the engine running in gear?
-
overheating while idle
While it doesn't specifically talk about repairing the fan clutch, the Summer 2003 issue has an entire article on solving overheating problems in early Z cars. It starts out telling you how to properly measure the temperature and covers the thermostat, fan clutch, radiator, etc.

Bumpers
I had mine done earlier this year for about $600 - front and rear (center and ends).

Insanity is alive and well (YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!)
I'd have to guess that he and his buddies decided a nice straight stretch of road would make for a neat trick. Get the truck driving straight with the cruise control on and climb out the driver's door, onto the hood, across, and back in to the passenger door. All while your buddies videotape the whole thing. The thing that bothers me the most about the video is that the fire hydrant appears to be dry.

'Complete Book of Datsun'
Sure, I don't mind parting with it. Send me a private message and we can discuss.

'Complete Book of Datsun'
I don't know if it's the same but I have a copy of "The Complete Datsun Guide" by a Michael F. Hollander published in 1980.

Original Seat Material?
Yes, it just falls right out. I recently redid my seats with new foam and new covers. I didn't bother with the old horsehair material but I suppose if you're picky about originality you might leave it in.

Alcantra
I'd never heard of it either. I did a <a href="http://images.google.com">google image search</a> and came up with this picture of an aftermarket shift boot (it's actually spelled "Alcantara"): http://www.rallycenteret.dk/nyheder/momo/Alcantara%20boots.jpg

Dumb Q for you Aussie guys.
If you look at the link I just posted you'll see the correct spelling as well as some other interesting information.

Dumb Q for you Aussie guys.
How would they know? If they've never been to the northern hemisphere they'd have the same problem as you. http://www.snopes.com/science/coriolis.htm

Dashboards returning from Australia
You should have received mine already. I sent it out the day after your e-mail. Please let me know if you haven't. From your message it sounds like you haven't gotten anything from anyone.

Rear Control Arm Question
Lot's of people have specifically complained about the "flat top" Hitachi carbs that were used on '73 models in the US. Others claim to have good experience with them. I wouldn't read too much into the comment. One thing that's I've always thought was interesting was that the Hitachi AM/FM radio in my '72 actually has an integrated circuit. I suspect that's one of the earlier commercial mass market uses of IC's.

Z Radiator
Are you sure it's beyond repair? You might ask a local radiator shop.

Will the Skyline crush the 350Z
Looks kind of like an Infiniti G35 coupe with a body kit trying to make it look like a Ferrari.

[72] 240 parts available
I know you said to shoot you an e-mail but I don't see a problem discussing this in the open. I'd love the locks and keys, assuming they're in good shape (and with such low mileage they probably aren't too worn). I could also use the heater control panel as I broke mine trying to get the dash out (it was already cracked all the way through on one side).

Iron cross style wheels
I didn't see it either because my proxy server kills it (probably because it has "ads" in the URL). Bypassing the proxy server makes it viewable.

Backfiring
I would suggest starting with reading old posts regarding tune ups. Backfiring is an indication that unburned fuel is getting into the exhaust system which is certainly not the fault of the exhaust system.

Determining series of car
I know you're just joking but there really is overlap. I think the ZHome list just provides the VINs that they're aware of. For instance, look at my information and see how it compares to the list: HLS30-47431 9/71 1972 model year flip forward seats no gas door latch pockets for seat belt retractors

Determining series of car
You'll want to look at he VIN (both through the windshield and on the plate in the engine compartment). I believe it's also stamped on the firewall. All of those numbers should match. The plate also shows the engine number which should match the number on the block (beneath the spark plugs). Finally, inside the driver's door jamb is a plate that lists the manufacture date. With all of that information you'll have a better idea of what you've got. Keep in mind that the distinction between models is often blurred. Nissan would keep using old parts even if new parts were being added at the same time. Here's a good place to look for production changes to see where your car should fit: http://zhome.com/History/DesignChanges.htm

Wanted: Rust free straight 240 tub
Unless you really enjoy doing work yourself and have lots of time to spare you're better off buying the best car you can to start with. If spending an extra $1000 will save you 100 hours of work then it all comes down to what your time is worth to you.

Odd clock on e-bay
I think this is a "Rally" clock. I've never seen one but they have been discussed here in the past.

Seat Adjustment 1972 240z
Two things to note: There are plastic spacers beneath each seat that can be used to adjust the height of the seat up and downslightly. You might be able to use that same technique, perhaps with longer carriage bolts and thicker spacers to raise the seat more. The seat cushion is probably compressed and, more importantly, the seat straps on the bottom may be shot. New straps alone may raise your bottom up a bit. I'm in the process of recovering both of my seats with new foam, straps, and covers and I expect it to make a big difference as I've always have to move the seat all the way to the front as well.
