please help really bad day
It could be your fuel injection relay. It controls the power supply from the fusable link. There is a colour diagram for the 280Z 1977 model which does have some differences, but it is clear to follow. If you follow the wire from the fusable link, it goes to the relay (70) and comes out (43 injectors, 10 CPU & 39 AFM contact switch). The power supply to the fuel pump is (74) in the relay terminal block. Check if you are getting power to the relay and work on from there. Good as any place to start. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/electrical-s30/13131-color-wiring-diagram-280z.html Chas

Do you have a battery frame insulator on the bolt to the body. I didnt have one and my frame kept coming loose. Now it has one, its never came loose since. Banzai Motorworks You can pick up a fusable link through Courtesy Nissan. The part number is 24022-U8700, but its superseded by 24022-N7600 and costs around $7.50, depending which one you choose. Both are available through Courtesy. I am not sure what the difference is, but mine (N76) has white treminals, a green wire plus a nylon wire. The nylon wire holds it in place when the link blows. I have seen them on E-bay without the nylon, but they are probably not OEM. FUSIBLE LI :: Nissan Parts, NISMO and Nissan Accessories - Courtesyparts.com You can see it in the 280z parts manual, but its poor detail. See Pos# 45 in the link. Bulkhead Cowl corner rubbers
Hi Steve, Thats a pitty the deal fell through. OEM parts are getting harder to find and its only getting worse. You can try Four ways engineering or MJP Eastern Auto. They might have some good used ones and they are closer to home. Heater panel screws
This is probably not helping you now, but could be handy later when trying to identify bolt sizes in your Z. I think Datsun almost always used what is known now as the ISO standard for screws and bolts. The ISO thread standard has been around more or less since 1966 and is made up several documents. These are the most used: ISO 68-1 Profile (Thread cross section) ISO 261 General plan (Diameter and pitch combinations) ISO 965-1 General Tollerances ANSI and SAE worked with ISO in the early seventies and ASME jointed in later. The more you read standards the more confusing it gets. ASME has a good document you can use to find threads and I think it would be exceptional if you found a thread in a Datsun that is not mentioned. With exception of left hand threads which is another standard. http://www.cmpubolt.com/docs/B1.13M-2005.pdf. (see document page 9 to11) Chas

Adjustable T/C rods : Anyone seen these before?
Interesting concept. They look very much look like modified originals. It could be someones "backyard workshop" fix. Someone with a lath who knew how to use it could make them eazily. Most companies like to stamp their name, part number or a symbol of some sort somewhere on their products. Its odd they were not used in combination with some sort of camber adjustment like camber plates or adjustable lower control arm bushing. Do you have any history from the PO? Chas

Please Help ID my Transmission year !Clutch replacement gone sideways !
Hi Chris, Just looking at the photo's on the computer instead of a smartphone. Looks like someone swapped the transmission for a FS5W71B 5 speed out of a 280Z (Wide ratio) and left the F4W71A transmissions clutch in place with the throw out collar. Your first photo shows clearly the clutch fork is out of the F4W71A Typa A 4 speed transmission. See extra hole for the return spring on slave cylinder. Your throw out bearing collar is most probably also out of the F4W71A transmission and too short for the new clutch pressure plate. Messure the distance from behind the bearing to where the clutch fork contacts the collar. The distances are: Type F4W71A 4 speed - 16mm. Type F4W71B 4 speed in the later 240Z/260Z - 29mm. Type FS5W71B 5 speed in 280Z - 25mm. The new pressure plates is for the later models. Check with the supplier to confirm. Most parts stores dont know the difference and give you the later version. I am not sure if the early version is this available. If thats the case, you will need to hunt down a collar for a 280Z since thay are the most common to find. Goodluck Chas

Can I use a 260/280z oil/temp gauge in my 1970 240z
Hi Tomzern, I dont know the 1970 240Z very good, but it should work. I do know the 280Z and can still remember some of the 73 240Z with a little help from the old workshop manual I still have. The only difference I can think of is the colour of the wiring and the power supply to the illumination lamp. The 1973 240Z compared with the 280Z 240Z. (1973) Power supply : Yellow/Red. Ground : Black. Illumination. : Red/Blue. (via Rheostat for dimmer) Oil switch. : Yellow/White. Temp. switch. : Yellow/White. Illum. Power. : N/A. 280Z? Power supply : Blue Ground : Black Illumination. : Red/Blue. (via Rheostat for dimmer) Oil switch. : Yellow/White Temp. switch. : Yellow Illum. Power. : Green/White You have a 260Z gauge cluster. If these colours are similar to what you have then you could use the 260Z gauge with a couple of wiring mods to get power to the illumination lamp. The 73 uses the power to the two guage coils and the 280Z uses a separate Power supply to the lamp. As for diffences in the sender units. The temperature sender is the same. The oil sender unit changed in feb 1977 to a two wire unit with external earth cable. Datsun probably worried that people would use thread tape on the thread and create extra resistance and incorrect readings. Even so, this sender would not give you any problem. Check you wiring first to make sure what goes where. Pay attention to the temp sender en oil press sender wires because they should be the same colour in your car. Goodluck Chas

1970 Z EU and US spec differences
Yep, Im trying to make a timeline for the engines in the US market, but its turning out to be harder than I expected. There is lots of info for the US models, but its not all that reliable. I would imagine the Europeanen market would be more challenging. You just have to keep slowly working at it. Goodluck with it and if I find anything Ill let you know. Chas

Please Help ID my Transmission year !Clutch replacement gone sideways !
Hi Chris, Just saw your post. Im on holidays and dont log in much atm. The transmission you have is the 5speed out of the 280Z (FS5W71B) which is known as the wide ratio of the two "B". The later FS5W71B in the 280ZX is the close ratio. Leon V has a thread on identifying these. The old clutch looks original, but the height differance you see is not such a problem. Meassure the height with the throwout collar/bearing on top. The section where the clutch fork contacts the collar should be around 92mm. You need a collar the match this measurement. There are several different collars out there: 240Z series 1, 240Z & 260Z and the 280Z. I dont have the info by hand, but I can post it when Im back home if you still need it. Plus the ones used in later versions 71C trannys and the datsun 1200 collars that creap into the picture. Chas

1970 Z EU and US spec differences
I know that the coil plate for the spring is welded at a different height on the strut towers. I have seen a thread (cant find it now) with two coil plates on the rear strut tower. The poster was wondering why the other plate was much lower and why it was there in the first place. That was because someone found a Euro strut and fitted it to a US spec 240Z. Probably because he damaged the lower part of the strut and could reuse the coil plate on the euro strut. The euro spec also uses the roadster 5speed. Australia also used mostly the euro spec which might help. Remember euro spec can change per country in Europe. Mostly turn signals / parking lights and such. Chas

Hey dude, I think your on the wrong forum? Last I heard Trans Am were not made by Datsun.

transistor ignition module maybe?
Im with PasterMike. Buy a can of electrical contact cleaner and spray each unit. Make sure the liquid evaporates on the part your spraying to cool it quickly. Then try to repeat what you did to confirm it.

Dont worry about being a noob. I dont know anyone that was born a Z expert DNA. The forum is here to help and most are glad to offer assistence. You might want to gives us a bit more history other than it has not been driven for at least two years. We keep getting tit bits of info like: working on my ride which sounds like a daily driver and then you say you dont dare drive it four feet. Looking at the photo of the cam lobe. Looks like there was a lot of condensation in the engine when it was parked. Did the PO say anything as to why it was parked? Chas
