What makes a Z a Z? What modifacations go too far to be called a Z?
The car i'm currently working on looks strikingly similar to your Z with the exception of the paint hue. Right down to the wheels and the 240z stripe down the sides. I wanted to ask you, it says about your car you are running 65 series tires on your konigs. Did you have any issues with tire rub on the drivers side? I did 55 series tires, same wheels you have on both my Z's and both drivers sides rubbed, not the passengers side just the drivers side, had to trim a little, there is no way i'd tuck 65 series on it. Nice ride. Back on topic, The poll ends in 6 days. We now have 72 people that have voted and the data still reflects the same results basically in the top 4 catagories voted on. Too many exterior modifications, A non Z engine, A non L series engine, a non Nissan engine. Back to the L28ET, it fits the bill for all, just a different series of Z, obviously frowned upon by many, it should have been one of the questions I think. What do you guys think of a Z with a period correct "turbo Tom" kit on it?

What makes a Z a Z? What modifacations go too far to be called a Z?
Again I agree, I don't really even need a stereo in my car. I don't listen to it anyway. Something about my Z just makes me want to hear the motor and the wind. I agree about the subs, nicely hidden stereo systems are a nice touch but big subs in coffin size boxes, video screens = RICE. I guess we could start a new poll, what is RICE. I believe the logo seats in a slow non sanctioned race car =RICE. Big video screen xbox, tv's =RICE. Neon lights and fake carbon fiber =RICE. I guess it all boils down to the fact that there are very few of us still participating in this poll that are true "purist" by definition. We have a common base of what mods go a little too far. Now I wonder what catagory my second Z falls in after this poll now that it has an L28ET in it but guess what I built it for me to drive. I am not out there looking for recognition because I don't really care whether anyone likes it or not. Not a soul has helped me build it so why should I? Most do, some don't but either way I don't really care. I'm a HUGE fan of sleepers. A sleeper car to me is the ultimate. I got my doors blown off one night by a kid in a mid 80's cressida with a 2JZ. I was oblivious to what he was packing until the turbo spooled up. To me that is awesome. Just my opinion I know but I like it when they keep it stealth. For a laugh I attached a pic of my wiring bird nest. It has been fun, since everyones talking about engine bays. THE STICKERS MAKE IT FASTER MAN I SWEAR!!!! .

[2012] What did you do to/with your S30 today?
I spent the majority of my day running temporary jumper wires and testing. I got my L28ET to fire and IT'S ALIVE!! IT'S ALIVE!!!. Now I have to wire everythng perminetly, mount the ECU, run new fuel lines, replace injectors, wire up an electric fan etc etc etc but the important thing is IT"S ALIVE!!! I'm so happy you have no idea. I took my other S30 to the local cruise in yesterday and man were there alot of people checking out the old beat up S30, they loved the dual carb filters i put on, and one guy i know says man you really have got that interior buttoned up it looks good. Its been a great weekend for the S30 addiction.

Strut Bars vs. Sway Bars?
This is good to hear because I've got the MSA sway bars front and back I havn't installed yet, looks like i'll just be doing the front, the rear requires me to weld the new brackets on from a later car (which I have) but i'll think i'll skip that headache. I'm glad you posted because I would have spent a saturday doing it for nothing.

hood wont open
Pjoe, I agree, I've never had the issue, but i'm glad I read because i'll know what to do when I do. Notice I say when

What if....
I really love to hear that i'm not the only one who is totally obsessed with these S30 Z cars. Many people on here love them, I'm not going to say I love them any more or any less but I'm totally obsessed. I would hire a translator, fly to Japan and spend about 3-6 months and buy about 10 different cars. A few Z cars, a R-34 Skyline, an R-32 Skyline, an AE86, a nice S15 Silvia, a few nice turbo RX-7's just to name a few. Then I'd have them all shipped back to the states and start work on my own private Top Gear style track with a full shop on the side. This shop would restore old relics and tune track attack JGTC style cars. I don't think i'll ever leave home after that point. I'd proceed to burn as much gas and roast as many tires as I could for the rest of my days.

Mysterious Engine Pause
I too lean toward ignition module, ignition related issue, are all your wires nice and snug and clean on your connections the the coil? With the car running, jiggle connections just to see if you can find the troubled connection but this is a classic sympton of the ignition module.

Positive battery terminal keeps turning black?
Your terminal is seeping, some lead molds don't get all the bubbles out of the lead and they are pourous, what kind of battery is it? Lead acid? AGM?

Upgrade Opinion Please!!!
I'm a firm believer in addressing safety concerns first, its alot more important to stop then to go. Do brakes, make sure all your ball joints and bushings are good, then suspension. After that its all up to what you feel like making your priority, I have opted for ignition upgrades first if you are running points. What is your issue with your steering column?

I spy a z!
I saw a white 280zx on my way to take my girl to dinner friday night in Salisbury Md. He pulled out on the highway in front of us, I didn't even tap the brake off cruise because I knew if that guy was driving a Z he wouldn't make me brake, he probably could use some new rear struts because boy did that car squat when he hit second but off he went in Z style as usual, I was jelous i was driving my truck.

My first Z, L24 with SU carbs. GoPro Hero
Probably is, I live pretty close to there. Thats a pretty keen observation too!! I don't wind it out too much but I definetly check out the scenery before I do. I've got it running pretty good for no more than I've got in it. I'm pretty sure the clutch is oil soaked, I need a new rear main seal but I will be on it as soon as this other project is done. I got my front suspension on my other car and man what a chore it was to get apart, i'm dreading doing the rears . Hows that set of coil overs treating you? Heres a pic of what you are hearing this is before I put the pod style filters on the carbs.

My first Z, L24 with SU carbs. GoPro Hero
Thanks olzed, I figured i'd post up how she runs, people see me on here alot talking but never see what i'm working with. I drive this car alot its my favorite ride. This was a true budget build. I have very little money tied up in it but a huge amount of sweat labor. If I wasn't able to work on it, it wouldn't have been feasable.

My first Z, L24 with SU carbs. GoPro Hero
This is a good pull in my first 240Z i bought a few years ago, its pretty original with a few mods and upgrades to make it more reliable. It was destined for the crusher but with alot of work over the past few years it still gets it done today. L24 was an ebay score I bought three years ago for $300, guy was going with an RB swap and wanted it gone. It doesn't smoke, doesn't make any strange noises and it pulls pretty good. I know i've gotten my moneys worth out of it either way . Original 4 speed that came in the car. I does sound like I need to do another clutch as it sounds as if i have roasted this one too. I have to figure out what that scratchy noise is with the GoPro but i'm still learning how to use it. That sound though is like music to my ears. Just in case anyone says it, I do have my lap belt on, i've been working on the seat belts this morning and the shoulder belt is off at the moment.

What makes a Z a Z? What modifacations go too far to be called a Z?
Its only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. My two Z's. Money couldn't get them from me, they are my little joy toys. One for me, one for my lady . I'm glad you stepped in and said something EScanlon, these forums are for good information and fun, I quit using this site when I first got my Z car because I got flamed for being a noob to Z cars. I've built engines all my life but heaven forbid i didn't know what was wrong with my carbs. If I want to see people being nasty to eachother i'll turn on the tv or go out in public. This was probably one of my most enjoyable posts i've been a part of on here because I think it taps into the feelings us Z car owners cherish. That feeling of having a very well made car, very rare car, very cult culture kind of car, that almost anyone could appreciate and often does when i take it out. So you mucked up the motor or the body, or swapped this or that, look on the bright side, you love a Z car, we have a lot more in common than someone who has a primer gray camero on blocks swearing it'll be the greatest some day

What makes a Z a Z? What modifacations go too far to be called a Z?
I posted on here awhile ago about selling my car or swapping my car's engine set and this whole reason of this topic played heavily on why I chose to do a motor swap in it (the topic not this poll, this was a few months ago). I have 2 z's, one fairly original, i have the numbers matching L24 being prepped to rebuild. It currently is running an L24 with 72 SU's, it will stay with an L24 and I will eventually do a total resto but it will never be an original car, it has earlier carbs, a different radiator and exhaust and wheels but its usable upgrades to the original Z in my opinion as I drive this thing at least 15k miles a year. My other 240Z was bone stock other than a reman L28 engine when I bought it. So it was already "tainted" for lack of a better term. In addition, it has at some point in its life had a bump in the right rear quarter and has been repaired. Repaired well but again "tainted" I applaud the guys who go through the painstaking process of cleaning every little fastener, bracket or part, sourcing genuine NOS parts. Eventhough the car might not be as fast as a modified car, a factory restored car is in a class of its own. The attention to detail those guys go to is unreal and I wish I had their patience. They are the true examples of dedication to the original, that in my opinion is paying honor. Working on cars as a hobby and at work, I really do have a great comprehension of how much time, organization and sweat labor goes into producing a show stopper stock Z, everyone knows it takes money but there is alot more to the picture then just money, not everyone can build a car or take the time to source the parts they need to finish their project. Again my hats off to you guys who do factory nut bolt restorations. I've got plenty to keep you busy if you get bored Honoring a Z is honoring how it was built originally, rolling off the boat. There is some grey area I feel with parts interchanges from the series of Z cars but at least its family .
