Years ago mine was in the shop for the same problem. the mechanic put a resistor (1K) in series with the water temp sensor (two pins) that feeds the EFI computer, not the one pin water temp sensor that feeds the gauge. He said it was running too lean and this made the mixture richer. After looking in the factory manual it makes perfect sense. This sensor controls the "base pulse" for the injectors. You might want to check the water temp sensor on the thermostat housing. Follow the procedure in the factory manual ie. put it in a pot of water with a thermometer and measure resistance as the water is heated up. Hope this helps. JC Triangle Z Club Raleigh, NC

does anyone know if the throttle body from a 280ZX turbo can be used on the 78 280Z? Is it the same as the 60MM TB that Motorsports is selling? thanks for your help. JC
  5. Go to this link: http://www.72hours.net/~zcar/ It has a pdf version of the Nissan EFI theory & troubleshooting manual for 280Z's! this will help you find the parts and understand how they work.. Send the link to everyone you know who has a 280Z! JC

Go to: http://www.72hours.net/~zcar/ You can download a pdf version of the factory technicians troubleshooting manual. This is a must read for anyone who has fuel injected 280Z's!
  7. Check the throttle position switch. it is located on the throttle body. Use a meter to check the normally open and normally closed contacts. Now move the accelerator linkage to full on and check the contacts again. The normally closed should open and the normally open contact should close. One set of contacts tells the EFI computer to shut off the injectors @ 2800 rpm, for de-acceleration. If one set of contacts is corroded, the EFI thinks you are letting off the gas and it will shut off the injectors, causing a major whip-lash effect. I had this problem after the car sat up for 6 months. Hope this helps...
  8. Courtesy Nissan has it on their web site: http://www.courtesyparts.com/secondtier_s30.html It's well worth the $35 price and it has Datsun/Nissan commercials on the bonus section.

Check the EFI water temp sensor, mounted on the thermostat housing, check that it is connected, check for corrosion on the connectors. PCV is cheap, replace it. EGR valve could be stuck. If you have the service manual, (highly recommended!) you can perform the tests indicated for the symptoms you have. GOOD LUCK....
