Bambikiller, You are correct that the valves act as part of the system and are not air pump. Thanks for the feedback. Since we are smog checked likie when I was in CA, I will just remove. Should I plug the hose to the check valve when I take it off? Thanks again for the help,

I know some of you are asking what a "positive displacement air pump" is and I do not want to create any confusion. It has to do with the early air injection system. Just so everyone knows, I do not have the conventional air cleaner. I have K&N Filters on the original carbs so the hose that would be going to the air cleaner had been plugged when purchased. This is a early 71 Z with an ATK 2.6 in it when I purchased. Thanks PWRCATZ

I recently drove my newly purchased Z 1700 miles across country to get it home. About 3 hours from home I have a beearing sound coming from my engine. I bought a listening device and this is what I found. I seems like a bearing or rough noise from the positive displacement air pump equipped on some 240/260Z's. According to the net (my manual is in transit), this acts as a Anti Backfire valve, check valve, and an air pump relief valve. It is located on the drivers side opposite the Alternator. Before I start the process of replacement, I thought someone might have some information. 1. Will my engine have problems if I go to replace this part and do not have installed. (Meaning is it driveable or not) 2. Is there a way to bypass? Problems? 3. Does the entire unit need to be replaced or can I replace a valve component? Thanks for any help you might be able to give. 6. I agree with Smokey, although I would make sure all electrical works as well. Make sure you check all lights, blinkers, etc. This may save you some time with the coppers. You may also find that these little Z's are quite rugged. I have known many to have them sit for a year and have them start and run well. But again, fluid changes and safety checks (brakes, lights, etc) are always a smart move.

The only thing you might want to check out is how the individual substantiates the 80K. If you are making a decision with that in mind, look at the documentation. Why is a new Jasper engine in the car? If it is a 2.6 did the original have problems before 80K? How many owners? Not to say that it is not true but always "buyer beware". These comments are only my 2 cents. You have to feel comfortable with the deal, but when plunking down money, ask the seller the hard questions and see how he/she answers.

Nigel, Here is a single wheel cover for an small opening bid. You may have to work the single angle as sets are obviously costing more (450). This may be your best option. A few from the people on the board, a few in e-Bay and you will have a set. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2401579842&category=34209
