Ignition help needed on '78 280z
I checked the connections to the ignition switch relay and found that there was 12v at the WR connections; however, there is no power from the Black and White wire that appears to be coming from the ignition switch. I get nothing when turning ignition to "RUN" either. Question if this is supposed to be constant hot, or hot only when ignition switch is "RUN". I currently am getting neither.

Ok thanks for the advice. I remeasured testing only the white wires with good ground and they are all HOT with 12v. I also verified the fusible links were good by checking the voltage on one of the end connectors with the other end plugged into white connection side. I have traced 12V on the WR wires all the way back to the cabin. So now i at least can narrow my troubleshooting to inside the cabin. Everything from the ignition switch down to the relay. I have a strong suspicion that the issue could be the ignition relay. I'm guessing it is a normally open switch and when voltage is applied it closes that is why it works when i jump the fuse box. It is energized some how and closes the switch. Does anyone have a good schematic of how the ignition relay works? is it single pole single throw?

Ok, i do not have constant power on all 5. Based on the schematic the WR come from the starter solenoid HOT. I will start my troubleshooting there. Also check the voltage levels on ignition when in the "RUN" position to rule out the ignition switch. Will report back soon when the rain stops

Not yet i will try next with the ignition in "Start" position. If there is a voltage drop does that mean there is an issue with ignition switch? I'm thinking of hooking the ignition coil directly to the battery and then jumping the starter. Essentially bypassing the cabin/ignition switch electrical. What do you think?

I have not tried with fluid, not sure how to use fluid with EFI. I will check for spark.

I'm a newbie to Zs but if I read the FSM electrical schematic correctly, jumping the fuse box is essentially bypassing the ignition relay? Correct me if i am wrong.

My apologies. Yes, the car has run fine in the past and even ran well up until a month or so ago. Then I started having issues with starting the car. It would crank and wind over but not start. Just shotgunning around i decided to jump the fuse box from the ignition to battery and the car fired up (i read somewhere or someone told me i can't recall). Now my current situation is that it winds over and cranks same as it did before, however, jumping the fuse box no longer works I do not think that it is a mechanical issue because the car runs well (if i can get it fired up). I feel something is loose, bad relay, bad switch, bad fusible link. Correct there are 4 fusible links and I have power to 2 of them and according to the FSM schematic that seems correct?

Ok folks here is where I am at: 1] Tested battery voltage 12.3V 2] With ignition switch in "ON" tested voltage at ignition coil and got =12.3V 3] Checked power at fusible link for WR wires and got 12.3V (not indication that fusible link is good but at least there is power there) Engine is winding over and cranking but not starting now. If i remove the BY wire from the solenoid and jump with a screw driver it still does not start and only winds and cranks. I would presume this would work if bypassing the ignition all together and jumping from the starter - but it didn't work, if it had then I could at least narrow my troubleshooting to inside the Cabin and not in the engine electrical. Any thoughts? Any other test to check in the Engine compartment before moving to the Cabin.

Thanks. I plan to start doing some testing. Will reply back with findings.

This is a manual transmission. Inhibitor relay I see in the electrical drawings but yet to physically find on the car. I ruled out the ignition switch because it worked when I jumped the fuse box. Maybe that was a bad assumption. Do you know of an easy what to test the ignition switch?

Thanks for the reply. Nothing happens when the acc, on, start positions. As if no power whatsoever. So by jumping the fuse box I'm bypassing the ignition relay? Where is it located?

I'm having intermittent issues with starting up. I believe it is related to the ignition startup. I have read all FSM manuals. The only way I can get it to start is by using a jumper wire from the battery to ignition circuit on the fuse box in the pasenger kick panel. Does anyone know what that means?
